I’m very grateful for all the rain that we’re set to receive here in Western Washington over the next week. It’s been so dry that the stream levels are not high enough for the salmon to get very far.

This photo is one of the few salmon that made it up to the stream that follows the road in front of my house. There were only a handful a few weeks ago. I’ll keep you posted about what we see this coming week.

So I'm pretty concerned about the #salmon runs...or lack thereof...on Southern #VancouverIsland. Been checking creeks & rivers with some fellow volunteers over the past month & half. Very minimal returning salmon in areas where we used to see many in November. Water levels are still too low in many salmon bearing waterways. I'm hoping for more returns as waterways fill up. I always worry a lot when keystone species numbers go down.

#ClimateChange is transforming ecosystems around the world. As glaciers retreat in northern #BC and Alaska they are creating new habitat for #salmon while also attracting interest from mining companies.

Part of a years-long study that was recently adopted by the #HaoomFisheries Society, a #NuuChahNulth led #fisheries org, to assess health of the river's #chinook #salmon stocks by tagging chinook with plastic bands. Tagging the #fish helps researchers identify individual salmon that have been previously counted and tagged, giving them a more accurate estimate of how many chinook enter the river and how long they stay there, explained project leader Keaton McCallum.

Huge turbines whistling round at 70rpm, lots of 1970s orange, and well-lit corridors for #salmon! (They apparently are afraid of the dark!)

Also, did you know that *human* fish counters count *all* the fish swimming up the fish ladder? They work two 8-hour shifts per day, with one 10-min break per hour. (?!?!?!) There is no graveyard shift because the salmon (our main fish of interest) don’t like to swim at night (see above).

Where Ohop Creek runs along Highway 7 in #Washington, cars shed 12 pounds of tire dust per year.

Some of that washes into Ohop Creek, which is salmon spawning habitat.

Tire dust contains the chemical 6PPD, which causes “urban runoff mortality syndrome” in #salmon (read: it kills them).

The Nisqually Indian Tribe has developed a filtration device that may be a stopgap to keep 6PPD out of spawning waters until a there's a more permanent solution.

While Northwest tribes were leading the effort to get regulators to deal with toxic tire dust and its effects on their salmon, the Nisqually people were also engineering a way to filter it out of stormwater.

If you want your grandchildren to know what a wild salmon is, the one most important thing you can do is support and empower Indigenous people who know those salmon, and how to protect them, better than anyone else in the world.

Why are dead and dying seabirds washing up on our beaches in their hundreds?

"Millions of short-tailed shearwaters (Ardenna tenuirostis), commonly known as muttonbirds, return to southern Australia from the Arctic each spring – a round trip of up to 35,000km.Muttonbird wrecks have happened on rare occasions since time immemorial, but are becoming more common. The many ideas about what is causing wrecks range from storms and overfishing to plastic, blue-green algae and irradiated water from Fukushima."

"When muttonbird wrecks occur, the casualties are starving. These birds weigh only half their healthy body weight. The factors leading to this starvation start before they reach Australia."

@elaterite
We call them #antlers. Cattle have horns. Antlers shed each year. Weathering bleaches them.
Found these in Five Rivers back when that #Alsea river feeder was open to #salmon #fishing. Perhaps this #elk was a victim of hunting season after escaping wounded.

If you like watching salmon and a lot of air bubbles, Oulu Energy's fish ladder at the Merikoski dam/power station has a live feed going. #salmon #FishLadder #WebCam

Went to the #seattle #ballardlocks yesterday and saw so much chinook #salmon in the fish ladder! They were huge! You could see a swarm of them on the path over the locks heading to the locks trying to acclimate

Haaf Netting on the River Nith at Glencaple near Dumfries. Haaf net fishing, once a common sight on the Solway estuary was a traditional method of Salmon fishing supposedly introduced by the Vikings which involved standing in the tidal current and waiting for the fish to swim into the net.

One of our #Alaska folks on here sold smoked salmon, that I bought from before. I lost who that was. Anyone know? Want to buy some more. #salmon

A dozen for so salmon in the viewing area of the fish ladder at the Chittenden Locks in Ballard, Seattle.

3.9 #Earthquake in a very remote area of central #Idaho. This one seems a bit further north than I'd expect to be associated with the Challis Volcanics... I don't recall seeing an earthquake here before.

Had my coffee with Shoshone Falls yesterday morning. These falls were described to me by Klickitat River Chief Wilbur Slockish, who once spread out a blanket here and listened for hours because the sound brought back boyhood memories of Celilo Falls before the US drowned them.

“Man, I missed that sound,” he told me.

"One morning, I woke up to my dad’s panicked voice yelling, 'Get up, get up, get up!' He threw my bed aside, and he and my mom threw gunnysacks full of fish into the hole, along with a net covered in fish scales. He quickly changed and scrubbed off what mud he could, tossing his scaly clothing down with the fish.

"Soon the state game wardens came knocking at our door..."

A dam is scheduled to be decommissioned on the Eel River, an important habitat for #salmon, #lamprey and steelhead.

The #Wiyot Tribe and non-Native conservationists see a dam removal opportunity.

Rest of #dinner not so fancy looking, but not too much lower in the flavor dept.
