#SALMON ........in San Diego?!?
SAN DIEGO— A local angler with only enough time to make a few casts before heading to work connected with a lot more than the largemouth bass he was hoping for, and it’s generating a lot of chatter in the Southern California angling community
I’m very grateful for all the rain that we’re set to receive here in Western Washington over the next week. It’s been so dry that the stream levels are not high enough for the salmon to get very far.
This photo is one of the few salmon that made it up to the stream that follows the road in front of my house. There were only a handful a few weeks ago. I’ll keep you posted about what we see this coming week.
So I'm pretty concerned about the #salmon runs...or lack thereof...on Southern #VancouverIsland. Been checking creeks & rivers with some fellow volunteers over the past month & half. Very minimal returning salmon in areas where we used to see many in November. Water levels are still too low in many salmon bearing waterways. I'm hoping for more returns as waterways fill up. I always worry a lot when keystone species numbers go down.
Paul Puddy is a director with the #QuadraIsland Enhancement Society. He says there are other places around the village to develop, and the #watershed will come back to life if salmon are allowed to return.

#ClimateChange is transforming ecosystems around the world. As glaciers retreat in northern #BC and Alaska they are creating new habitat for #salmon while also attracting interest from mining companies.
A new study from #SFUBioSci professor Jonathan Moore maps out these emerging land use conflicts, identifies policy blind spots and key opportunities for stewardship. https://www.sfu.ca/sfunews/stories/2023/11/mining-industry-competing-with-salmon-for-rivers-created-by-disa.html #SFUScience #SFU #ecology #fisheries #conservation #aquaticecology #watershed
Part of a years-long study that was recently adopted by the #HaoomFisheries Society, a #NuuChahNulth led #fisheries org, to assess health of the river's #chinook #salmon stocks by tagging chinook with plastic bands. Tagging the #fish helps researchers identify individual salmon that have been previously counted and tagged, giving them a more accurate estimate of how many chinook enter the river and how long they stay there, explained project leader Keaton McCallum.
During an afternoon trip to #Edmonds, #Washington in the great #PacificNorthwest, I saw a public #art installation that I thought was pretty neat! The #salmon are windmills with bells that tinkle when the #wind blows strongly enough (which it did not, because it was a beautiful, mild #autumn day).
This is a longtime family favourite #food snack. It's been a long time since I've made some. It's like a spicy fish jerky. Packs well for outings.
No end to problems with the Norwegian Farmed salmon.
Still they keep exporting, claiming it is good quality, and several countries have started to ship the salmon back to Norway.
Sick salmon, self dead salmon, all been exported.
Getting sick of all the farmed #salmon on the market? Take a look at some delicious and sustainable alternatives - some wild, some farmed, some pricey, others very affordable:
Salmon exported from Norway are sub-standard.
For years now the farmed salmon exported to other countries, from Norway, has been of extremely poor quality.
Half rotten fish, bad smell, etc.
A check by the Norwegian health authorities showed that the producers were selling fish which had already died due to various reasons..
2023 Salmon Harvest Summary
Commercial salmon seiner. Image-ADF&G
(Juneau) — The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has published preliminary harvest and value figures for the 2023 Alaska Commercial Salmon Fishery (PDF 921 kB).
A total of 230.2 million salmon were harvested in 2023, a 43% increase from the 2022 total harvest of 160.7 million fish. The 2023 commercial salmon...

This article from 3 days ago describes some of the heartwarming dam removal going on after 2 decades of struggle to save #salmon in the #pnw thanks to a coalition of river advocates, including local tribes.
Why not build a statewide passenger rail system? Virginia is doing it. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/times-watchdog/huge-spike-in-costs-to-help-salmon-could-derail-wa-transportation-budget/ We’ll hear how it can be done in the Winter Gathering in Centralia on Dec. 9. Today I went *inside* the #BonnevilleDam!
Huge turbines whistling round at 70rpm, lots of 1970s orange, and well-lit corridors for #salmon! (They apparently are afraid of the dark!)
Also, did you know that *human* fish counters count *all* the fish swimming up the fish ladder? They work two 8-hour shifts per day, with one 10-min break per hour. (?!?!?!) There is no graveyard shift because the salmon (our main fish of interest) don’t like to swim at night (see above).
To free fish stuck behind a dam, should #Oregon a. destroy the dam or b. let the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers build an experimental, costly - $450M! - #salmon cannon?
@ianrosewrites Thanks for that Northwest Treaty Tribes piece re: #salmon, #6PPDquinone, and toxic tire dust. That topic came to our attn a few years back, but we'd not read anything recently, until seeing David Schmalz's #MontereyCountyWeekly 11/15/23 piece "What will #ClimateChange mean for steelhead #trout?" https://www.montereycountyweekly.com/opinion/mcnow_intro/what-will-climate-change-mean-for-steelhead-trout-it-depends/article_050b48c8-8415-11ee-97d5-772a4c4e3f97.html #EarthStewardship #tires #fisheries #coho #steelhead
Where Ohop Creek runs along Highway 7 in #Washington, cars shed 12 pounds of tire dust per year.
Some of that washes into Ohop Creek, which is salmon spawning habitat.
Tire dust contains the chemical 6PPD, which causes “urban runoff mortality syndrome” in #salmon (read: it kills them).
The Nisqually Indian Tribe has developed a filtration device that may be a stopgap to keep 6PPD out of spawning waters until a there's a more permanent solution.
While Northwest tribes were leading the effort to get regulators to deal with toxic tire dust and its effects on their salmon, the Nisqually people were also engineering a way to filter it out of stormwater.
If you want your grandchildren to know what a wild salmon is, the one most important thing you can do is support and empower Indigenous people who know those salmon, and how to protect them, better than anyone else in the world.
The reports and findings regarding the Norwegian farmed salmon is never ending.
Now, it turns out rotten and sick salmon is exported as "Superior", which is the best quality.
“I don’t know why they shut us down. We’re not the problem,” said Ronald Demientieff, an elder in Holy Cross. “You have to regulate us because they killed them in the ocean? We’ve been regulating our fish way before Fish and Game came to this place.”
“Nothing can replace the fish,” said Tessiana Paul, an administrator at the tribal government in Holy Cross, Alaska.
"They said significant cuts would risk sinking Area M fisheries and jeopardize local tax revenue that funds schools and other essential services."
"But salmon are notoriously difficult to study. They spawn in fresh water, then spend most of their lives far out in the Pacific, an area dubbed the “black box” because it’s so vast and poorly understood." —Max Graham for @grist
The Norwegian Embassy hit on the idea of boosting demand for salmon by promoting different methods on how to prepare it, including substituting cooked salmon in popular meat dishes. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/11/12/japan/norway-promoting-salmon/?utm_content=buffer6b0ae&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #japan #salmon #fish #norway
Why are dead and dying seabirds washing up on our beaches in their hundreds?
"Millions of short-tailed shearwaters (Ardenna tenuirostis), commonly known as muttonbirds, return to southern Australia from the Arctic each spring – a round trip of up to 35,000km.Muttonbird wrecks have happened on rare occasions since time immemorial, but are becoming more common. The many ideas about what is causing wrecks range from storms and overfishing to plastic, blue-green algae and irradiated water from Fukushima."
"When muttonbird wrecks occur, the casualties are starving. These birds weigh only half their healthy body weight. The factors leading to this starvation start before they reach Australia."

Good luck with that ...
""We have declared a war on Pink salmon” Norway fights the invasive species in the Arctic."
“We’re a nation that put a man on the moon. We figured out how to take lead out of gasoline and still have our cars run,” EarthJustice attorney Elizabeth Forsyth told The Seattle Times for an article about a new federal lawsuit against tire manufacturers filed by West Coast fishing groups. “It would astound me that we couldn’t make a tire that doesn’t kill up to 100% of coho salmon returning to their natal streams.”
Everyone who cares about healthy Northwest ecosystems should be thanking the salmon protectors of the Yurok, S’Klallam and Puyallup people today, for successfully leading this campaign. Now they need sustained attention and support from the rest of us to keep regulators focused on salmon and river health.
Why I won’t be buying sea-farmed salmon ever again.

Looking forward to seeing the chum salmon arrive in my area again. This photo is from last year in Carkeek Park in Seattle. While their ocean phase is silver, their freshwater spawning phase develops some exciting colors and stripes! Do you have winter runs of salmon near you? I'm looking for more places for photos.

Day 13: Salmon of Knowledge for Folktober
The Salmon of Knowledge is a creature in the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology, sometimes identified with Fintan mac Bóchra, who was known as "The Wise" and was once transformed into a salmon. Tasty too!
It's been almost a decade since the removal of dams that blocked salmon migration on Washington state's Elwha River. Salmon populations have now recovered enough that members of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe are this month enjoying their first traditional fishery since removal.
Confirmed: Salmon are spawning in Arctic rivers
Researchers have confirmed that salmon are spawning in an Arctic Ocean watershed, suggesting that at least some salmon species could be expanding to new territory as climate change reshapes their habitat.

Young salmon and trout die in the Cowichan River due to extreme heat and low water levels causing algal blooms. And in a few weeks they might have to start trucking salmon up river (again) from the estuary because the water levels are so low.

Had my coffee with Shoshone Falls yesterday morning. These falls were described to me by Klickitat River Chief Wilbur Slockish, who once spread out a blanket here and listened for hours because the sound brought back boyhood memories of Celilo Falls before the US drowned them.
“Man, I missed that sound,” he told me.

"One morning, I woke up to my dad’s panicked voice yelling, 'Get up, get up, get up!' He threw my bed aside, and he and my mom threw gunnysacks full of fish into the hole, along with a net covered in fish scales. He quickly changed and scrubbed off what mud he could, tossing his scaly clothing down with the fish.
