I just co-authored a #newpaper with Hafssa Tounsi from LBNL on thermal-hydrological-mechanical response of a heater test in #salt at #WIPP (Brine Availability Test in Salt). Hafssa did some great work with TOUGH-FLAC as part of DECOVALEX Task E https://doi.org/10.1007/s00603-023-03632-5
I really recommend that pink Himalayan salt.
I'm not sure why it's pink. Wikipedia says it's mineral content including iron, so I guess it's rusty salt or something.
But I literally use half the amount of this than when I use generic table salt. I mean, I used pure salt/kosher salt in the past and I might have had the same result but I don't remember.
But the Himalayan stuff seems to add real flavour.

on the upside I've managed to setup gitlab ci so that my VMs get provisioned with terraform on proxmox, with cloud-init doing the initial setup until the point where the VM requests that the salt-master accepts their key. When that happens they run a highstate provisioning users and configs. My goal is to setup gitfs, and when my k8s cluster is rebuilt I'll use git to manage that as well. #gitlab #terraform #proxmox #salt #saltstack

"The authors of Wednesday’s study found microplastics affect #CloudFormation, and clouds are of huge importance to the weather we experience.
"Clouds produce precipitation in the form of rain, snow and everything in between. They also block sunlight, and less solar radiation means cooler temperatures.
"In order for a cloud to form, water vapor – a gas – needs to turn into water droplets – a liquid. Then, many water droplets need to come together to become a cloud.
"Water droplets form when water vapor interacts with tiny solid particles in the atmosphere, like #dust, #ash or #salt from the ocean. According to the study, microplastics can now be added to that list.
"These particles are #hydrophilic, which means they are attracted to water. Once the first water droplets cling to microplastics and other tiny particles, more water droplets are pulled together and clouds form.
"The process is akin to how a single spark can eventually set an entire field ablaze: One tiny particle in the atmosphere can set into motion a process that becomes something much bigger.
"According to the study’s authors, further research must be completed to fully understand the extent to which microplastics influence cloud formation.
"Could a greater concentration of microplastics lead to more clouds? Will an increase in clouds lead to more precipitation or larger swaths of cooler conditions? These questions remain unanswered."

"Human activities are making the globe saltier, specifically in our soils, fresh water and air, according to a study released Tuesday in the journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment.
"The excess salt has already caused serious issues in freshwater supplies in recent decades. Saltier water led to brown tap water for months in Montgomery County, #Maryland. It also played a part in creating the #toxic lead-laden water in #FlintMichigan.
"Salt pollution isn’t some flashy threat to our existence — like, say, a meteor hitting Earth — but the issue is gravely overlooked and is a 'sleeping giant,' said Sujay Kaushal, lead author of the study. He said it might be the 'most boring but contemporary problem that we have.'
"Most people think of salt as the white specks we put in our food or the salt in oceans, chemically known as sodium chloride (NaCl). That sodium salt can also be found in detergents, other household products and more, but there are many different salts, including calcium, magnesium and other ions used in additional products — and they’re all increasing in places where they don’t normally occur.
"Over the past 50 years, salt ions have increased in #streams and #rivers as people have begun using and producing more salts, the study says. The team found that across the globe, about 2.5 billion acres of soil — an area about the size of the United States — have become saltier. Salt lakes are also drying up and sending saline dust into the air.
“'We use water for everything from growing crops to drinking to industrial processes to heating and cooling,' said Kaushal, a geologist at the University of Maryland. 'But when you have salt in the water, it affects all of those things … and it’s increasing.'"

I just made this: rose petal pink dried peppercorn salt - which took all of three or four minutes, so I may need to dream up more fun kitchen-y tasks.
- Heat rose petals in a dry pan, to release the flavours, but watch they don't burn.
- Put peppercorns & petals, with sea salt, in a spice grinder.
- Grind.
Don't worry about amounts. Start with the petals & pepper, and a bit of salt, and keep adding salt till you're happy with the colour & taste of the mix.

I really think instead of ‘Sea Salt’, they should call it ‘Instant Ocean’.
Ending that tax cut for the rich would not be “double taxation” as its #DefendTheRich proponents ridiculously claim, because the federal government doesn’t levy taxes on property. Of course there is no principle against multiple taxes on a transaction either, in fact us regular folk pay those all the time, from utilities to sales tax and tariffs, and paying income tax to both the IRS and the state.
It’s just an excuse to make the rich richer.

I've been on a salt free diet for a while now (to combat high blood pressure). It started off fine, but I'm starting to tire of it. The novelty of "hey, I used to load this with salt and now it's salt free!!" has started to wear. Lately I just feel it tastes off.
So, rather than making stuff the same as I've always done (but without salt), instead I'm going to try using fruit more -- IE, vegan tofu stir fry with apples and strawberries and cinnamon, etc.
#Salt is pretty fascinating - the shape and related solubility make a big difference to taste perception. You can also cut down on sodium (salt) intake by adding glutamates (for #Umami ) - that boost overall taste. You can make a mix of salt and msg for that.

Good article on salt consumption. This is something I've taken on to combat high blood pressure, and it has worked. So, no more breads, processed foods, restaurant meals (unless they'll specifically cook it with no sauce and no salt), or added salt to my food. And like the article says, it becomes quite normal after a while.
