My dream child of FTP, NFS and Samba that doesn't exist:
- Encrypted by default, but can be unencrypted
- Automatically adapts to network latency
- Highly optimized for reading, writing and enumerating files.
- Random access is as fast as sequential access (within hardware limitations, of course)
- Optional built-in HTTP server with directory listing
- Authentication can be anything, including password, token, public key, IP address or no authentication
- Supports resuming interrupted transfers, even after days
- Supports simultaneous up- and downloading of the same file (streaming)
- UTF-8 only
- The server can calculate hashes on request, allowing for differential file transfers
- Can be mounted as a filesystem (And automatically handles dropped connections)

TIL that Windows doesn't discover samba shares on Linux via NETBIOS anymore. It requires running a Web Service Discovery host daemon.
Here I am, beating my head against a wall trying to figure out why #Samba is refusing to cooperate on this #Fedora #Server install. Even using tools like #Cockpit to tell the share to set the #Selinux contexts for Samba, I still can’t get the shares working.
Just like my #RHCE (RHEL 4/5) bootcamp instructor noted, just disable Selinux.
And with Selinux disabled, all my troubles melt away.
This is bad practice. But even when the tools to make it easy don’t work, what else is there?

@josephholsten regarding your comment, IIRC the major blocker with all #samba upgrades on #FreeBSD is samba's very own "vfs" code to support MS-style extended attributes and ACLs. Upstream samba does not support FreeBSD here, so on any changes to that code, a lot of work needs to be done in the port.
That said, I'm quite thankful some experts (especially Timur) always take care of that stuff, of course they (have to) take their time... I for myself will stick with 4.16 until an official 4.19 port is committed to the tree 😉

@josephholsten #FreeBSD's #KDE depends on whatever #samba version is chosen in DEFAULT_VERSIONS (where I personally have set 4.16 for a long time). So, this by itself is fine.
But for whatever reason, the default in DEFAULT_VERSIONS is still set to 4.13, so official binary packages will end up using this. I have no idea why, would probably have to ask the maintainer of the samba ports about that:

I forget to unmount the SMB server all the time and it creates a hassle to fix. WebDAV unmounting better.
I still need to compare the speed of transfers of both protocols but it doesn't matter much.

@CyDeFect @FiLiS In theory, yes. In practice, not so much. The #gvfs-based approach creates "weird" mountpoints in a user scope. The #smbnetfs variant creates some "dynamic" mountpoint where you have to access a hostname/ip-address using it as it was a subdirectory. Both not what I would have needed for home directories via #SMB3. Plus, they both perform badly.
So, in my case, just using #NFS for #FreeBSD clients (and still offering #SMB3 via #samba for #Windows clients) was the sanest solution.

Durch verschiedene Programmierfehler konnten Angreifer auf geheime Informationen bis hin zum Kerberos-TGT-Passwort zugreifen. Aktualisierungen stehen bereit.
Here is a Proof of Concept demonstrating the #samba smbd CVE-2023-3961 #vulnerability
1. On victim host running vulnerable Samba set up a unix domain socket only accessible as root user:
$ sudo socat UNIX-LISTEN:/pwned,mode=700,fork stdout
2. On attacking host:
$ smbtorture -U "" -N ncacn_np:victimhost[/pipe/../../../../../pwned] rpc.echo
At least stock Debian install samba allows anonymous exploitation in this manner. This is quite alarming, to say the least.
Note: smbtorture is built as part of samba build procedure – On Debian based systems you can use sudo apt build-dep samba && apt source samba && cd samba-* && dpkg-buildpackage to get it. Specify LD_LIBRARY_PATH as needed to make it find the necessary shared objects.
smbtorture will talk MS-RPC protocol to the unix domain socket, and as such is not directly useful as generic #exploitation tool. #Weaponizing the vulnerability is left as exercise for the reader.
Addendum: You can't fully control the data being sent to the socket. This will like neuter most attack scenarios.
Interesting #samba smbd #vulnerability CVE-2023-3961 allows samba client to connect to any server side unix domain socket. The access occurs as root user and thus any named unix domain socket is fully accessible. If suitable service exist on the server this will lead to unauthorized access to the service, assuming the socket file access rights are the only means of authorization. The impact depends entirely on the available services on the server, but may lead to #privilegeescalation or similar high severity impacts.
Updated to add: This vulnerability is made more difficult to exploit since the attacker has somewhat limited control on the data being sent to the socket.

Because the hack to make WSL files available to Windows was to use the Plan9 file system ... despite the fact that SMB networking has been supported for more years than anyone currently at Microsoft has even worked there, they felt like they had to provide a half-assed over-complicated solution using "any code that's not GPL licensed" instead of something that works. Happy to see #plan9 getting some love, but it won't be long before MS's implementation diverges from the rest of the world.

[Scanner-Problem] Habe Raspberry Pi Ordner unter Windows via SMB eingebunden (als Laufwerk "Y:"). Übertragung "per Hand" klappt auch. Aber bei meinem ScanSnap kann ich das Laufwerk nicht als Speicherort auswählen.
Hintergrund: consume-Ordner von Paperless-ngx eingebunden, damit (Windows-)Scans dort direkt landen.

A semi-repeat from back in April - but that was my Dad's original copy, and this is the Verve/Acoustic Sounds re-release...which also sounds great.
So I need troubleshooting advice - I've got some permissions thing I can't figure out yet.
I've got two identical(?) samba file shares, one on #cent 7 the other #alma 8, both #zfs underneath. Both systems domain joined.
I can add users and groups via the windows security tab on one, and not the other.
I've looked at share and file perms - they look the same to me.
Does anybody have a good resource? #Samba logging settings that will tell me something? Fav irc channel/discord room?
