That was probably meant as a joke, but a good #SoundDesigner can make an entire track from nothing but one short #VocalSample, and you'd never know it.
The human voice has lots of great #textures and #harmonics that easily lend themselves to #SoundDesign techniques like #GranularSynthesis and #resampling. Add in a healthy dose of the usual effects (like #reverb, #delay, #chorus, #distortion, #repitch, etc.), and the possibilities are nearly limitless.
Sorry for the info dump; Sound design is one of my lifelong passions, and I can't help chiming in when someone brings up audio #sampling. I hope you at least found it somewhat interesting. 😅

I recently re-watched the ever inspiring doc about #sampling "Copyright Criminals" and was annoyed by Steve Albini's comments on sampling which he viewed as "lazy" and "uncool" - his whole posture was arrogant and holier than thou. The thing is I had no idea that homie - who produced some amazing albums - had this edgelord past that recently caught up with him cause you know, the internet. Anywho in case you care, here's his mea culpa from a couple of years back. He gets extra brownie points for going after Joe Rogan.

One of my favorite music moments is when I'm listening to a song that's new to me and I realize that it's the source for a sample in another song I loved.
For example: today I listened to Planet Claire by the B-52's. https://youtu.be/47YAcpCa5dM
The driving bass line immediately reminded of this Verve Jazz Remix version of the Peter Gunn theme, sung by Sarah Vaughan. Technically this isn't a sample but rather a musical throughline of a common beat, kind of like how reggae has many songs set to the same beat. Still fun and interesting though.
I'm still not sure if the lyrics Ms. Vaughan is singing are original to the theme song or what. Either way it's a fantastic song to sing along to, especially if you've just broken up with someone.

Well, Sting supposedly gets $5,000 per day, to this day, from P[uff] D[a|i]ddy for using the sample of “Every Breath You Take” and the vocal hook in his Track “I’ll Be Missing You”.
Problem is, Police guitarist Andy Summers say he’s never seen a cent although he’s the one who came up with the guitar riff that is the actual basis for the Police song and the rap version.
Does Sting have the better attorneys? Probably. Is that fair? Probably not. To sum it up: Never make too much money with your art. Money distorts character.

It's the last day of February. I was wondering about what to post to mark the occasion. Then "Bam Bam" by Sister Nancy came on. You think you don't know what I'm talking about? But you probably do. "Bam Bam" is probably the most sampled reggae/dancehall song ever. It came out in 1982 and while "One Two" and "Transport Connection" became hits in Jamaica, "Bam Bam" became an international hit. But Sister Nancy's producer hid its success from her. She moved to the USA in 1996, and the film "Belly," starring Nas and DMX, and featuring "Bam Bam" prominently, came out in 1998. It was then that she became aware of the song's enormous popularity. But it wasn't until 2014, when Reebok used it in an ad without credit, that she fought for her rights to the profits from its use, and won. She's still performing! And if you want to sample "Bam Bam," you should call her up--she might just do it live.

This seems like YA example of how the last N decades of #sampling, #mashups, etc (and that's just in music) should be seen in retrospect as the artisanal "primitive accumulation" phase of whatever hyperautomation will bring.
If everyone's going to talk about how "revolutionary" this, "game-changing" that, and "epistemic abyss" the other, that's all just historical periodization, isn't it? It *should* inaugurate a golden age of #historiography. Except that #capitalism (or, per @Mckenzie, "something worse") doesn't like historiography, because it offers one of the few conceptual ladders out of its totalizing nonsense.
Every track on this album is a cascade of chilled musical genius. Fuses a lot of genre boundaries. Solid recommend.

Most of the tracks appear on both. Every Day is the superior album listen in my view.
