#WritingWonders 5.29 — What type of government exists in your story?

Absolute monarchy.

For most people, life is pleasant, predictable, peaceful, and under the rule of laws far fairer than any in our time. You would have little to complain about. However, you wouldn't have today to compare to. Director Rainy Days, the Director of Home and the Nine Outer Worlds, has rewritten history. She is immortal (not invulnerable).

All property stems from her. The best you can hope for is a lease, and then property stewardship laws limit what you can do with it, especially beyond your lifetime.

All rights are at her whim. She fosters bureaucracies as she can't handle all her goals alone. All rights she revocably grants come with laws that make lying and abuse of those rights an offense against the absolute ruler. That offense is always worse than the crime.

She favors stability over anarchy. Usually. It isn't a world without crime. Criminals as well as other nations mostly understand they enjoy autonomy and their governmental paradigm so long as the Director of Home values the experiment they represent. When wars occur, it's often part of the experiment. She works to ensure weapons she can't defend against are never created—or are quickly destroyed with their makers and masters.

Rainy Days doesn't aways win her wars, but civilization starts renewed soon after. With her at the helm, or sometimes with only her influence. Some believe she's committed genocide.

She has goals. Maintaining the gene pool and increasing humanity's diminishing population seems the greatest amongst them, which is strange considering the blood on her hands.

These people live in interesting times.

Captain Carl Schafer visits his Fillim crew members, Doctor Lux Pang and Doctor Exotic Nurr looking for information about these strange new invaders nicknamed The Silence.

It is the first time he has visited their habitat on the ship, and he finds it disorienting, aligned vertically rather than horizontally.

From the very narrow, but also very high, slot in the wall, Doctor Lux Pang emerges like a spider several metres off the ground.

His three arms clasp at the walls, as does his tripod legs, his single wraparound compound eye analysing Captain Schafer carefully. His chitinous exoskeleton shines a little as the light reflects off it.

Raising one of his insectoid claws, he beckons the captain to enter their crack in the wall.

#ScienceFiction fans: why on Earth (and beyond) should #aliens invade or destroy us?

There's no scarcity in the universe (enough energy and water for gazillions of species, along with enough materials to build all kinds of large technostructures), no need to have the space equivalent of a "war for oil".

I can see no "economic" reason for starting and winning a large-scale interstellar war. Also given the vast scales of time and space, most species would probably kill themselves anyway.

Is James Patrick Kelly on Mast?

Is Justina Robson?

Is Greg Egan?

Or Megan E O'Keefe?

I feel immensely privileged to have found John Shirley on here, who I've read and idolised for decades. It's made me wonder - who else is on here?

The books I’m sharing are free as of today in Canada and usually the United States of America, too. If you do not live in those countries or are reading this after May 25, 2023, I do not know if they are free or available for you.

Please tag me if you want a boost for your lists of free speculative fiction books from other parts of the world. 💜

It’s a short but sweet list this week.

I had a weird dream that there was a human base on the moon that got blasted into deep space by a nuclear explosion, and then every week they would somehow make it to a new solar system tens of thousands of light-years away.
And their laser guns looked like staple guns from Home Depot.
And there was an alien with caterpillars for eyebrows.
Then I remembered, that was a TV show from the 1970s.

"Narratives that use robots and androids to represent the Other often don’t interrogate the assumptions about humanity at their core because they fail to answer one question:
Why are so many androids white?"

Delighted to hear from fine @orbitbooks crew that long-gestating project to bring The Culture drawings of the late, & still much-missed Iain M Banks to print, now has a November 2023 release.

"Faithfully reproduced from sketchbooks kept in the 1970s & 80s, these annotated original illustrations depict the ships, habitats, geography, weapons and language of Banks' Culture series of novels in incredible detail."

Just finished Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice trilogy. Hugely enjoyable. Science fiction’s ability to present different possibilities is so welcome & her AIs are very much more nuanced than present debate would allow.

It is one of the reasons I love Iain M Banks’ Culture world - the AIs were the quirky stars of his novels!

PS please don’t @ me with a flood of techie detail!

Ad Astra: A low key great hard Scifi Film

Okay, so I saw this movie when I was flying overseas (there was nothing else to watch), & I was surprised how great Ad Astra was. One of my favorite scenes (spoilers below) is the moon battle which displayed how majestic & perilous space is when compared to Earth.

https://youtu.be/il23tuSVTPg

Ad Astra is full of surprises, but not much action (it’s more of a technical/logical film with some emotion thrown in.

I would recommend watching for it’s realistic approach towards space travel, but it’s not something you would sit with the family to see.

Several studies, including one from Harvard & MIT, have discovered that going into a nap with a problem in #mind helps the #brain find solutions. Extending that, use of a prompting device called Dormio during hypnagogia (the transitional stage between wakefulness & #sleep) increases #creativity & may show a way to prevent nightmares (and maybe finish a long-stuck novel).
