The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

The Okkarren:

Strange broad and squat creatures with radial symmetry. Widely regarded to be superb engineers and a spiritual people who view their chief god as an engineer.

Friendly with the Republic, though they are difficult to negotiate with diplomatically due to their unwavering dedication to the truth.

One of the stranger sapient species known to humanity, the Okkarren are about chest height to a human, and their bodies are round, relatively thin at the outer edge, and thick in the middle.

Their mouth is in the middle of their disc-like body, and surrounded by four pairs of two eyes, giving them unparalleled depth perception.

They have six legs located equidistant around the edge of their bodies, with two tentacles above each leg.

When they are being expressive, this can appear as a mass of flailing flagella, but they are surprisingly dextrous.

Conn Teel is the arch-villain of The Void. Immortal by use of the Incarnate technology, he rules over an empire with the venal vindictiveness of the Roman emperors.

But, whilst still on his first body, he helped build the first orbital habitats, helping mankind escape the poison Earth.

Conn Teel is a villain, sure, but he is a villain that did indeed save humanity from itself.

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

The Naled:

Far more intelligent, emotional and individual than humanity thinks. No queen, no hive mind, and adaptable DNA, they are not a technological species, but a biomechanical one.

Whatever obstacle is thrown in their way, there is a Naled subspecies dedicated to overcoming it. They even fly through the void inside their own spaceborne kin.

https://www.ratchman.com/species/naled

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

The Naled take many forms, and a myriad of shapes and sizes. They are by far the most adaptable species known to humanity.

Pictured is one of the most common forms: the warrior warform.

Somewhere between a beetle and crustacean, it is of similar size to a buffalo, and very strong.

Where it really shines is with its intelligence. Naled are quick to assess any situation and work out any new problem posed to them, and with their claw-like hands, they even have the means to manipulate tools.

The mandibles and horns that adorn their head change depending on the individual, and this leads to another unexpected trait: the Naled may be insect-like, but they are not hive-minded. Each Naled is an individual, but they do still have a very utilitarian society.

The Makeen:

The embodiment of the term 'eco-warrior', these saurian conservationists are as savage as their appearance suggests. And yet, in many ways they are more cultured and caring than humanity is.

Since the inception of the Republic, they have started to view humans in a better light, and are working with them to restore planetary environments.

https://www.ratchman.com/species/makeen

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

The initial appearance of the Makeen is that of a dinosaur, but that resemblance is purely coincidental, brought about by convergent evolution.

The body is very raptor-like, but with the addition of two extra arms. The 'forearms' are a little less strong than a human's, and are their main dexterous arms, whereas their larger main arms are much stronger than a human's, and built for rending more than they are fine control.

Their heads have a three-sectioned jaw, giving the creatures the capacity to swallow very large prey, and the three eyes gives them excellent depth perception. At the back of the head is a peculiar set of hollow tubes that they breathe through to create a musical form of speech.

Their backs are covered in small armour plates, all along their extended tails, which are used for balance. At the end of the tail is a barb that can be used for slashing, though using this comes at the cost of a loss of co-ordination.

Two species of humans — one technologically advanced and one living in nature — have coexisted peacefully on their home planet for over a century. But when an ancient treaty is breached, devastation follows.

Balika has always felt like an outsider. When tragedy strikes, she is left without a reason to remain with her tribe. Looking for a place where she can belong, she leaves the familiar forest and ventures into the desert to bond with a mythical animal through music. But her forgotten life calls her back when she discovers an unexpected threat to her land.

Sammah works long hours as an experience developer and returns to his tiny apartment alone. He suffers from anxiety and spends most of his time in the virtual world. He opens up to a friendship with a colleague, but just when things start to look up, he gets trapped in a strange and dangerous affair. He might either lose himself, or the only person he truly cares about.

Struggling to make the right choices, they get pulled into a brewing disaster. Their worlds are about to collide, and their paths are fated to cross. Caught on different sides of the conflict, Balika and Sammah take up the fight in their own ways. If they want to save what they love most, they must risk everything. Will that be enough?

The Kollomeen:

Ephemeral and fragile, no species appreciates life more than the Kollomeen and, as such, they make perfect peacemakers, acting as diplomats to the universe.

Strangely, they have an exceptionally strong bond with the violent, hedonistic Ju'Jinkai, bonding through a shared sense of humour and their love of art.

With six eyes, orifices through which they propel themselves, and a multitude of squid-like tentacles dangling from the bottom, these creatures need an exo-suit to survive in a human environment.

The suit itself is a hovering bell-jar-type construction, transparent and with many controls the Kollomeen inside it can use.

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

The Ju'Jinkai:

Evolved from aquatic predators, they hail from a planet where existence is a struggle, and premature death is common. As a result, it has made them a hedonistic and violent culture.

Terrifying as these creatures may be, they also possess a rich sense of humour and appreciate their allies, being close allies with the pacifist Kollomeen.

https://www.ratchman.com/species/jujinkai

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

The Ju'Jinkai evolved from an aquatic predator, and hold onto many of the associated traits. In many ways, they are trapped between two worlds: the aquatic and the terrestrial.

Imagine a hammerhead shark with the stance of a velociraptor and a secondary extending jaw, and you have a general shape for the species.

This is a little reductive, as they are complex creatures with many unique features. Their skin has bio-luminescent patches which flash different colours depending on their mood. Their arms and legs can fold up into grooves in order to make their bodies streamlined underwater. Their hands have opposing thumbs, and their feet are almost amphibian-like.

Their size is also rather intimidating, being much larger than humans, at around six to nine feet tall at the hip. It takes many people to down a single Ju'Jinkai in melee.

And never get close to those jaws.

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

The Fillim:

Spindly insectoids with a bizarre appearance, the Fillim are one of the elder species. They are sociable and immensely intelligent, and even share elements of humour with humanity.

The first to accept that the Republic might represent humanity turning a corner, they are investing heavily in their support of a more progressive society.

https://www.ratchman.com/species/fillim

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

The Fillim are strange-looking creatures, resembling bowling pins in general body shape, they have a tripodal arrangement with their limbs: three legs and three arms, all very spindly but with surprisingly dextrous digits.

They have a single compound eye that stretches all around the circumference of their head, making them impossible to sneak up on, and a similarly wraparound mouth with a baleen filter.

They communicate via musical whistles which are projected from their multiple nostrils.

Despite their unusual appearance, the Fillim are incredibly agile, and their motion does tend to unsettle humans as it does remind them of the way spiders move.

I'm reading Children of Time (about halfway through?) and so far it's brilliant, so I picked up the rest of the trilogy today :). Humans accidentally uplift a civilisation of Jumping Spiders as part of a terraforming project, what could possibly go wrong? :) #scifi

I'd say "warning: not for arachnophobes" but considering I am one it's not traumatising me too much - at least the author picked the cute ones :). I just view the spiders as an alien race really, but they're really well done! Definitely worth picking up, I'd say. #scifi #scifibooks

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

The Eyrians:

One of the elder species of the universe, and godlike next to humanity. They also see themselves as shepherds for the younger species.

Their intent is to guide, but they also believe in strict discipline, and they punish those species that violate their edicts. The only real problem with this is that their rules are not always understood.

https://www.ratchman.com/species/eyrian

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

The Eyrians live shrouded in the shadows, having evolved on a planet with very low levels of light.

Monstrous avians in their bodyplan, they have a roughly humanoid shape, though they are more comfortable walking in a similar manner to a bat than they are like a human.

Their leathery wings are evolved arms that have skin stretched between their fingers. This makes them excellent fliers, and it is their preferred form of locomotion.

Their heads are almost satanic in appearance, with raptor-like beaks, four glowing red eyes and two long horns that jut out of their head. These horns are one of the key distinctive features for individual Eyrians, as they curve and curl individually.

Their necks have a form of vent in them through which they breathe in a system separate to their ingestion.

They also have a long tail with a wicked barb at the end of it, and their hands and feet have vicious talons.

Due to their appearance, it is theorized that they visited Earth at some point in the past, leading to the cultural image of the devil.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin is considered a sci-fi classic for a reason. It invites readers to a thought experiment: what would a genderless society be like? At the same time, it explores spirituality, politics, human relationships, social norms, friendship, patriotism and other issues, that are all intertwined. It's an intellectual work that allowed me to look at our culture from a different perspective.

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

The Dantikar:

Cosmic capitalists with strong familial bonds and feudal system.

But it is not their sole defining trait, as they also have well-defined family bonds, and a deep and complex spiritual mythos.

Of all the species humanity has encountered, it is the Dantikar that are the closest in nature save for one aspect: they are not as aggressive.

https://www.ratchman.com/species/dantikar

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

The Dantikar are about chest high to a human, but they have roughly the same mass. However, due to coming from a planet with higher gravity, they are surprisingly strong.

They are an insectoid species, but one that has evolved a centaur-like body plan. They started off more arachnid in shape, with eight legs but, over time, their front body tilted upwards and two legs move forwards and became arms.

Their lower body is more conventionally insect-like, with six sturdy legs on a horizontally-aligned body. The front half is more humanoid, with two muscular arms extruding from their torso. The hands are large and are less flexible than human hands, so their technology is larger and chunkier than our own.

Their heads have an appearance that echo an ant, with large mandibles and huge compound eyes.

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

The Cadir:

Xenophobic does not do this species justice as a descriptor. Their fanaticism drives them into periodic wars with their hated enemy, humanity. The conflict usually ends up being halted by the Eyrians once it gets too heated.

Evolved from a mollusc-like creature, they are slower but surprisingly resilient, and also far smarter than initial appearances may suggest.

https://www.ratchman.com/species/cadir

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

The Cadir are a mollusc-like species that have evolved to stand upright on a pyramidal base with four snail-like feet, broad and flat, that secrete mucus to help them glide.

Their heads still retain a familiar slug-like shape, with eyes on stalks and a few other sensory organs sprouting beside them. The underneath of the head has a 'mouth' with a radulla, a rasping tongue that can cut as effectively as any tooth.

In addition to all of this, they have four whip-like tentacles that emerge from either side of their main body. Their 'walking' might be slower than a human's pace, but their tentacles can be wielded with speed.

Their 'walking' is a form of half-walk, half-slide which looks reminiscent of skating. This means they can move faster than they look, but still not as fast as a human.

They are very intelligent, and are at a similar level of technology as humanity, though their religious zealotry has been holding them back for some time.

Their ships are organic-looking: hot and moist inside, and they stink of a strong musty scent that is repugnant to humans.

Everett Creed:

In a universe where dictators hoard all the best criminal hustles, and mercilessly persecute those who seek to make their fortunes through morally dubious means, Everett sees an advantage in aligning with the resistance fighters who oppose Conn Teel.

But his reputation for dismembering those who cross him make him a hazardous potential ally.

Everett is a man in his early sixties with a generally approachable demeanour. Softly-spoken and articulate, he seems friendly at first glance.

However, when he chooses to let that façade slip, his true nature is far more cold and disturbing, and those eyes reflect a chilling disregard for any kind of life.

He has aged well, with a full head of grey hair, and wears a pair of spectacles. In this image, he is smoking a cigarette and he holds a bloodied axe hang by his side, his preferred method of punishment.

Affixing the viewer with that cold, reptilian gaze, there is the sense that he is sizing you up, and seeing nothing but raw meat.

Leric Corsanis

The pragmatic foil to Daedaric Varr's idealism and one of the four leaders of a resistance against the Teel Corporation.

Quick to become agitated, but never rash, he always manages to employ his reasoning to any problem in front of him.

In this image, he is dressed in heavy clothing with a mask hanging around his chest. This gear is necessary to wander out onto the streets of Mennan City on Caliban, a planet heavily polluted by centuries of heavy industry. The bulky protective clothing is required to prevent the toxic air from melting the lungs or the heavy metal rain spilling contaminants onto bare skin.

He is holding up a sign stating 'humans not resources' across his chest and has a defiant stance about him.

Mira Candor is more of a cypher than an identifiable human. Mira is the armour that they wear.

The armour itself is deep scarlet, and covers most of the body, leaving a few gaps around the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

The helmet has a menacing visor in the shape of two glowering pupil-less eyes, though angular and rectangular. The rest of the face is enclosed by a filter which gives Mira an anonymous sneer.

Mira is prudent about making the armour the identity of the feared bounty-hunter, as it allows them to walk unmolested without it, a valuable trait for a manhunter.

Mira stands in an alert pose, with a handgun held up beside the helmet as they track a potential target.

Spy and information broker operating within the criminal underworld, she is a woman with a horrific past who is trying to piece herself together again. More than happy to exploit the criminal community for her own gain.

Known to have some form of relationship with the notorious bounty-hunter Mira Candor, though details are unknown.

Loren Roth is a woman with a very cynical nature, and that distrust is often written on her face. She rarely smiles, and wears a sneer most of the time.

She has an athletic build and has a distinguishing scar on the left hand side of her face. It is a thin scar leading from the side of her eye down to her jawline. Not too obvious from a distance, but becomes more apparent at close range.

She is self-conscious of this, and often hides it with her shoulder length hair.

She is stood in a defiant pose, smoking a cigarette, dressed in a maroon leather jacket and trousers, with a black shirt with the logo 'nihilist' emblazoned upon it.

Spent some time signing and packing #WildFlowersElectricBeasts with this awesome bookmark featuring the kassilar for my beta readers — so rewarding 🥰 Can’t wait for them to get it!

I’ve got a small number of books left, and I want to sell this package (signed book + bookmark) on Etsy or somewhere similar. If you’d like that, please let me know — I’ll reach out when I set it up so you can get it 🧡

A photo of me singing my book for a reader. Only the page and a part of my hand are visible. I’ve written „To Fabia from Alina” and started writing the next line.
A bookmark in the open book. The bookmark shows a large, purple, furry animal with 4 wings and 3 eyes flying in the sky.
A book next to a bookmark. The cover: A dark-skinned woman and a light-skinned man standing back to back. There are wires and electronics visible under the man's skin on his head and neck. Flowers and plants separate them. Light yellow background behind the woman that merges with light-turquoise background behind the man. The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

Kang Si-Woo:

Pirate Queen of the Dokkaebi and equally charming, principled and devil-may-care. She is a scoundrel by nature, and a leader by circumstance.

But when a renegade Aleph Corporation fleet enters her slice of Wild Space, an opportunity presents itself to broaden her horizons that she could have scarcely conceived.

Kang Si-Woo is a confident and scurrilous woman in the prime of her life and enjoying every moment, even the harsh one.

Of average height, but with a larger-than-life persona, she has long, dark hair and a face filled with cheeky bravado. She does have a distinguishing birthmark on the right side of her face. Whilst not particularly eye-catching, it would mark her out as an outsider in Aleph territory.

Dressed in leather armour typical of a pirate, her attire harkens back to the piracy heyday of ancient Earth.

She stands with a confident posture, with a smirk on her face, as if contemplating her next act of mischief, her hand on her hip whilst the other carries a handgun to her side.

Marcus Bezalian, self-professed genius tech entrepreneur, is the most business-focused of the corporate leaders in The Void.

But, like the society he founded, it is a false façade. He's as oppressive and despotic as the other rulers, but his narcissism has him believing his own propaganda.

He may view the universe as a transactional ruleset, but it is a weak justification for his own avarice.

Ohhh, what a wonderful review of #WildFlowersElectricBeasts 🥰 🥰 It makes me so happy to think the book brought so much joy to the reader 😊 And I'm totally with them on Adri — she's the best friend anyone could ask for 😁
#SciFiBooks #BookReview #AmWritingSciFi #WritingCommunity #ReadingCommunity

A screenshot of a Goodreads review. 5 stars. "I absolutely loved this book. It follows two people who don't quite fit in their respective societies: Sammah, a resident of the sci-fi dystopia of one hemisphere of the planet who is looking for meaning in his life; and Balika, a member of a tribe of the other hemisphere, which is as yet untouched by the futuristic civilisation, who is shunned by her tribe for being asexual. Both of them are given opportunities to build a connection with someone, and we get to find out where that takes them!

The book is fast paced, and a real page turner. I had to know what was going to happen next, how the two protags' stories would intertwine with each other, and just to get more time with Adri, Sammah's friend who I need in my life! It's the best fiction I've read so far this year."

So... The Calculating Stars. This book has won multiple awards, and is popular with readers. The opening scene pulled me right in — it was so urgent, fast-paced and cool. But then the pacing turned glacial. The incessant sexism, which was very accurate, because the story is set in the 50s, grew tiring & frustrating, and the main couple's relationship felt stale. I found that the book wasn't for me. Have you read it? https://alinaleonova.net/blog/the-calculating-stars

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

Shi Yin:

Working for the Yeung Corporation, she is a small and quiet woman who blends into a crowd. She is an expert gunslinger and brawler. But what makes her dangerous is her lack of restraint.

The brutality of her childhood has forged her into a merciless adult with scant respect for human life, but she does have her limits.

https://www.ratchman.com/characters/character-profile-shi-yin

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

Shi Yin is a small female of Chinese descent, and she appears, at first glance, to be an unassuming and shy woman. Her hair is of shoulder length, and usually tied back.

Looks are deceiving and, in Shi Yin's case, totally unrepresentative of her violent nature.

What does reflect her history, is the horrific scar on her neck, as though someone had cut her throat at some point in the past, but with a blunt blade.

She is wearing a purple-tinged jumpsuit that is high-tech chameleonic weaveware: a suit capable of limited stealth functions, with adaptive camouflage.

She also brandishes her two trusty handguns, with which she is lethal.

Have you read Ursula Le Guin's "The Word For World Is Forest"? Just the title itself drew me to this story, and I really loved it. It might be uncomplicated in it's portrayal of good vs. evil, and some readers criticize it for the lack of subtlety. But does everything have to be subtle? Is it necessary to portray the violence of colonialism with nuance and balance? Does it always serve the purpose of the story?

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

Viktor Heller:

Genial and good-humoured, Viktor struggles with ill-health. Yet it would be foolish to underestimate this old man, as he never lost his ruthlessness or awareness.

His family are split down the middle as a result of his darker personality traits, and yet he does genuinely love them. The tragedy is that he is the one driving them away.

https://www.ratchman.com/characters/character-profile-viktor-heller

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

Viktor Heller is approaching the end of his life, and is suffering from a number of medical complaints.

Though he looks frail, his eyes crackle with good humour and cunning. He still retains some of his hair, but it has receded badly.

Due to the confinement to his wheelchair, he has become rather portly, and the suit he wears looks ill-fitting, but it really conceals a number of medical devices, as does the chair itself, secreted in compartments.

He despises looking ill, as he fears it makes him look weak, a serious issue when locked in a cold war with three other corporations. As a result, he does his best to hide it.

Generally, he looks very genial and approachable. He may be jovial, but he is still a tyrant. Friendly to those that are useful to him, vicious to those that stand against him.

An ancient life-form has been hiding on Earth. A creature that defies human understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics. Something capable of destroying entire biomes and making all life extinct.

This is a #BookReview of another Ann Leckie's novel, Provenance, set in the Imperial Radch universe, but exploring other cultures. It has good world-building & character development, and plays with various themes: prison break, family drama, heist, political intrigue, weird aliens. Not sure why I liked it less than the trilogy because it sounds really good 😁 Maybe it was the pacing that seemed slow despite various events and subjects 🤔 https://alinaleonova.net/blog/provenance

The Void - Dark sci-fi space opera.

Arturius Volt:

Volt has spent his entire life in service to the Aleph Corporation, but he has become disillusioned by what he sees as feckless and deeply flawed leadership.

As he leads the military campaign during the war with the alien Cadir, he becomes a hero to the people, but now he has made an enemy of Marcus Bezalian, can that keep him alive?

https://www.ratchman.com/characters/character-profile-admiral-arturius-volt

#scifi #sciencefiction #scifibooks #StarWars #startrek

Admiral Arturius Volt is among the most experienced military commanders the Aleph Corporation has. Tough, disciplined and dedicated to the people, his experienced is written across his weary face.

In his sixties, he is still in excellent health, but time catches up with all (mortal) men, and his white hair and beard reflect his advancing age.

Volt has a stocky build, and has lost some of his athleticism, but he is still a hard man to knock over.

He stands, as defiantly as he always does, rifle in one hand, by his side.

He wears the Aleph Corporation military uniform, black from the waist down, white from the waist up, with the black forming a triangle in the middle where the apex meets his sternum, forming a vague A shape.

The white of the top half denotes his specialty (command). Those of other specialties have different colours, such as engineering being maroon, medical green and media purple (yes, media is a separate specialty: welcome to Aleph).

Today, I'm sharing a #BookReview of Ann Leckie's Ancillary trilogy. Even though it's a space opera, it focuses more on the personal and local. It's quite heavy on wold-building and exposition related to culture and manners. It explores some interesting themes, like personhood, dehumanizing the enemy, class and cultural differences, and (the meaninglessness of) gender. It's not subtle in exposing colonization & subjugation. What do you think? https://alinaleonova.net/blog/imperial-radch-ancillary-trilogy

Whilst not exactly handsome, he does possess a malevolent charisma that does disarm the unwary.

He stands in a relaxed pose, one hand tucked into his belt, and the other raised to his chin as he considers some new creative form of torture.

A screenshot of a review. 5 stars. Wild Flowers, Electric BeastsI don't usually read sci-fi books at all, as I hardly ever like them. but since this book was recommended to me, so I gave it a chance - and I really liked it a lot!
The story takes place in two totally different worlds. In both worlds theres one protagonist, and I came to really like them! Even though none of these two worlds is the one we know from our own experiences, which would normally be a factor that puts me off, I felt comfortable in both of these worlds.
I also appreciated the way the author brought highly topical issues into the story, topics that have our daily attention.
My great hope is, that the author is going to publish a sequel!

Looking for a place where she can belong, she leaves the familiar forest and ventures into the desert to bond with a mythical animal through music. Struggling to make the right choices, they get pulled into a brewing disaster. Their worlds are about to collide, and their paths are fated to cross. The Void

Science fiction drama set in the 42nd century following the power games between the human empires that have flourished since humanity took to the stars.

All but one of the human empires are ruled over by venal misanthropes with little regard, if any, for their people. All that matters are power, and profit.

They have been locked into a cold war for millennia, but that is finally starting to thaw.

Blurb:

Have I mentioned what a great beach read this book will be? The last four chapters will keep you turning pages so apply sunscreen before you get to them.
