@digitalcourage #whoogle ist deutlich einfacher selbst zu betreiben als #searX. Habe ich nun schon seit Jahren bei #hetzner , ohne von Google gesperrt zu werden.
Wichtig ist mir einfach der bullshit (tracking, ads, sponsoren) filter.

Früher war eine Zeitlang #startpage meine bevorzugte #Suchmaschine. Dann habe ich mit #searx und #metager probiert und nutze jetzt hauptsächlich metager. startpage und metager scheinen eigene Werbepartner zu haben und eigenes Tracking und Auswertung vorzunehmen!? maps.metager.de verlangt WebGL, deshalb suche ich in LibreWolf nicht mehr, sondern nach Möglichkeit in Tor. Tor lässt sich aber nicht auf jedem Rechenr installieren. Die einfache Suche auf openstreetmap.org ist anscheinend besser geworden. Routen?

searx findet viele Seiten nicht, aber vielleicht liegt es an den Instanzen, die ich probiert habe, einschließlich einer eigenen auf Linux, die ich zum searx-Lernen installiert habe.

Seit mir metager jeden Tag suspekter wird, bin ich verunsichert, wie ich im Netz suchen soll. Wenn es an meiner mangelnden searx-Erfahrung liegen sollte, könnt ihr Kurse / Seiten empfehlen?

Auf digitalcourage.de lese ich, dass searx schnell blockiert wird. Dagegen ist kaum ein Kraut gewachsen.

On this note, i'm not sure which dependable search engines we've got left. #SearX can be really nice sometimes, but it's a hit and miss when it comes to its instances, losing ability to use its underlying search engines at random times. #YaCy seems really interesting, but it being written in Java and packaged only for a small number of distributions, makes getting it to run pretty tricky. Are there any other decent options at this point?

Un "!bang" ou "&qwick" est une fonctionnalité de méta-moteur permettant d'afficher uniquement les résultats du moteur de recherche souhaité par l'utilisateur·rice. Le problème avec #DDG et #Qwant, c'est qu'on est redirigé vers la page de résultats du moteur en question : donc, on n'est plus protégé (et ça, Firefox sait déjà le faire) !

On peut déjà se questionner sur la différence d'emplacement des serveurs (RGPD, impact environnemental).

Ensuite, je trouve que l'utilisation d'un !bang avec #DuckDuckGo (ou d'un &qwick avec #Qwant) n'a aucun intérêt (pour cet usage, Firefox est même mieux). En revanche, quand on utilise un !bang avec #Searx : on reste protégé par le méta-moteur qui conserve son rôle de mandataire pour l'affichage des résultats.

#Matplotlib question for scientific graphs:

How can I get standard scientific notation (e.g. 3.4 \times 10^{-5} converted #TeXLaTeX style, at a tick) on axis labels instead of the software style '10e-5' written near the axis and 3.4 at the tick? Readers of a paper are not necessarily matplotlib fans.

pyplot.loglog() does this, but not all plots make sense as log-log plots.

#Searx searches so far only turn up hints for software 'e' notation, not standard notation.

Why I love bare-metal virtualisation and container deployment?
I've learned about privacy-centric meta-search-engine #searx about 30 Minutes ago: about 15 minutes later I had my own instance of it running inside a Debian-container on #proxmox seamlessly integrated and easily accessible from all my devices (including mobile) thanks to a virtualized VPN-gateway.

Searx [1] is #AGPLv3, privacy oriented, you can install it locally (I haven't tried) or you can use any instance from the recommended list [2] or find any other #Searx instance that you trust sufficiently. Some Fediverse instance sysadmins might be willing to run their own searx instance, e.g. searx.glammr.us, searx.newsie.social. Or even searx.mastodon.social.

So here's the thing - until we wrest control of the web away from #Google, we're all stuck dealing with their products at least sometimes. Having alternatives (#DuckDuckGo vs Google search, for example) is important, but so is having the ability to USE their products without ceding control of our systems and information (#searX vs Google search).

@zeh @alcinnz I've been experimenting with a few search engines recently, including Mojeek, Metager.org, SearchMySite.net and the Searx instances at Monocles.de.

I've also figured out to how to configure my Firefox-based mobile browser to search for videos directly on YewTube (Invidio.us instance), and for green tech info on Appropedia.org, and I plan to add more sites to this (eg search.joinpeertube.org).

Is it just me or is web search getting dumber? I just tried to search for a report using DuckDuckGo, with the author's name and the full title as keywords. Instead of the text of the report, ideally from the original publisher, I got a bunch of vaguely related tech press articles. DDG are basically a front-end for Bing now, so I guess they're to blame. But I tried Monocles.de (Searx instance) and the results were only marginally better.

Der Suchergebnisse-Markt hat sich also verändert. Anders als #Searx zahlt MetaGer einigen Quellen Geld.

Ich bin Fördermitglied des SuMa e.V., der MetaGer betreibt, und finde es schade, dass es nicht mehr von uns gibt.

Die für Mitglieder werbefreie Suche hat nur auf einem meiner Geräte funktioniert. Ich werde mir eine Ladung Tokens kaufen – vielleicht mit Bargeld. Dann werde ich bewusster suchen. Ich suche gern mit Suchmaschinen, aber seit ich erfahren habe, dass das viel Strom verbraucht, will ich das gezielter tun und häufiger Lesezeichen verwenden.

i've moved from #google to #duckduckgo and through a short period of various #searx -instances landed on #ecosia. which was fine, but feels quite slow.

@atomicpoet The most efficient counter-measure is to never use " #Google Search", and prefer #searx #yacy #Startpage or #Presearch ( #DuckDuckGo has been enforcing censorship on a bunch of content for a couple of years now).

Just upgraded the RAM on my #selfhosted home server from 8GB to 16GB, which cost me peanuts. It does feel more snappy, and with room to expand!

Its a similar story with #searx, however searx uses not just G but aggregates search resilts from potentially G, DDG, MS, Metager, Qwant, Yandex and more.

The only successful large social media monopoly that has been broken is Twitter, and that did not require external VC funding or Blockchain. More monopolies being eroded by FLOSS too #SearX, #NextCloud

One of my more popular FOSS apps is Gugal, a libre web search app with support for #Google Search and #SearX.

I've actually been on Fosstodon for longer than Twitter, but didn't use it often before the Twitter acquisition.
