Every now and then I get approached by a person who wants to write fiction, asking me for advice.
And every time (even though they haven't written any books yet) what they're asking about is not *writing* advice, but marketing advice, or reassurances that they'll sell lots of books.
This always makes me feel like a bit of a fool. Being a commercially successful writer is a whole other skillset, and one that I don't possess.
It's hard to convey that without sounding judgmental - I don't think there's anything wrong with writing to the market and all the rest of it, it's just not what I do.
I usually just say that selling books is hard, and I suck at it, and prefer to spend my time writing 🤷

Well, well, it seems like a couple of users (possibly bots) have been going around Goodreads dropping 1-star ratings on self-published books. Mine was one of the targets and now my book is sitting at 1 star :')
