Slightly better example of the water shader I'm working on.

Looked at some old shaders and saw one I made to visualize the squishing (blue) and stretching (red) when transforming coordinate systems. One thing that took me a while to grasp in #OpenGL programming is precisely what the role of the steps in between the #vertex #shader and #fragment shader was. Not necessarily talking about the individual pipeline stages i.e. stencil shader, but more like conceptually what happens when the vertices are broken up into fragments. The secret is that there's an interpolation step where any value in a vertex array object attribute will be interpolated out between vertices, which wasn't obvious.

Creating glass in VR is always a risk due to the cost, especially double glazed.

A neat trick is to use a subtle bump offset to fake the depth. When treated with finesse it will work with cheap additive glass, (for low end devices) as well as proper translucent glass.
The only real extra cost is one more texture sampler.

Working on a new technique for stylizing water!

The foam and fake caustics use 3D perlin noise that scrolls vertically through the plane of the water. The mid-values of the noise are clipped out and create animated ribbons, where the clipped noise intersects with the water's surface.

I started putting together ideas for doing a learning stream on twitch. The general idea is to go over how to write a shader like the one above using ray marching, and going over the actual math to understand what it is doing. I always hated getting lost in notation so I want to use as many drawings and such as possible to drive home what the math is doing.

Anyway, I hope people have some interest in that sort of thing. It'll be a zero knowledge assumed stream.

I modeled some stylized rocks and created a shader to blend them into the terrain.

I use triplanar shading and also sample the color of the terrain (I save textures before runtime).

Meanwhile, little breakdown of my system: it takes 0.5ms to render a light on my RX 5600 XT:
- 0.09ms for the compute based ray-casting
- 0.3ms for drawing shadow volumes
- 0.02ms for setting up stencil buffer
- 0.07ms for drawing meshes with PBR shading

New step ! 🥳

Now that my shadow volume generation isn't borked anymore (and works with open meshes) I moved on to properly support the light itself with the shading.

Took the opportunity to rewrite my PBR stuff from scratch (ditching LearnOpenGL in favor of Filament).

Frosting a toroid, with a little snow shader.

It projects a few layers of stacked perlin noise from above, and draws a snow texture where it falls, deforming the terrain if there's enough of it.

Today I got macroquad's shadertoy example to work with makepad's shader cross-compiler.

This means that, theoretically, I can rewrite all macroquad shaders from glsl to, basically, rust and it will just work across opengl and metal.

Together with @2xAA I founded the band #iieinander in 2021 and yesterday we finally released our website with some basic info AND our super cool logo in 3D using #r3f combined with a custom #glsl #shader (#fbm #noise).

Added bridges! There's a slight graphical inconsistency under a horizontal bridge's borders, because the floor-water border tiles are removed to allow us to pass.
Also, we can now jump over water (and respawn if we land in it, with a small splash!).
Jumping is automatic, to keep mobile controls simple.
I still need to make the bridges and water 2.5D-compatible (yay waterfalls!)

Today I progressed on Amber Road: moved to #godotengine 4 (my tileset is thanking me), added a water shader I had in stock, along with various post-processing effects:
- The light rays and faint vignette effects are just 2 big textures (circular gradient + 1D noise with custom ramp).
- I've become fluent enough in shaderspeak that I can throw various lines of code and it makes a 2D depth blur effect.
My 2.5D platforms are still extremely buggy though.

Trying a "new" way of displaying a repeated pattern of v+h lines in a #shader but using signed distance. I think I managed to get the formula straight.

The gap is the distance between the "bottom pits" (representing the lines, your eye is looking up from the bottom), the offset is a simple shift in one direction or another, and the thickness corresponds to how large the lines are.

The pitfall to avoid while doing so kinda is to not mess up the ratio |x/d|=1 (distances must remain a ramp)

I'm really interested in writing shaders. So now I'm writing a "greenscreen" (which actually works with greyscale) shader to do a simple color change. Thought making a mask from the greyscale values and inflating it would be good. I don't see a way to inflate the mask though or access neighbouring pixels soooo.... uh... yeah... help.

For the last bit of post-processing, I wanted the depths to be more mysterious, but brighter once you get down there.

As it was, you could see all the way to the bottom, and that didn't feel very mysterious...

"Depth Fade" to the rescue. Now everything far away gets dark.

What makes this Volumetric Atmospheric Scattering shader so powerful, is that it correctly implements several optical phenomena such as the Rayleigh and Mie scatterings. 💡

They models how light behaves when it interacts with the particles in the atmosphere. This is what ultimately makes out sky blue. 🌈
