"Because #Johnson couldn’t get #Republican votes to take up the government-funding resolution under normal procedures, he instead had to suspend the rules and pass it with a two-thirds majority. This meant that #Democrats would have to bail him out — just as they had #McCarthy...
"When Moody’s Investors Service lowered its outlook last week on the US govt’s creditworthiness, it specifically cited Washington [ #GOP ] dysfunction: “renewed debt limit brinkmanship, the first ouster of a #House Speaker in US #history, prolonged inability of #Congress to select a new #HouseSpeaker, & increased threats of another partial govt #shutdown ”"
The U.S. Senate voted late last night to avoid a government shutdown.
ABC News reports the move "will keep the government funded at 2023 levels. The bill extends government funding until Jan. 19 for the Veterans Affairs, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Energy departments, as well as for military construction. The rest of the government is funded until Feb. 2."
The Senate has approved a funding package for the government in an 87-11 vote.
Once President Biden signs the bill, the government will remain funded in its entirety through January 19th, 2024.
Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson continues to be criticized by the far-right of the House GOP because of his reliance on House Democrats to pass the bill.
Per the latest Maris poll, 49% of respondents would blame Republicans for a #shutdown versus 43% who would blame Biden and House Dems, which says something about how pointless public opinion polling can be when it just gauges reflexive partisanship.

"The House voted overwhelmingly Tuesday [for continuing resolutions] to prevent a government #shutdown after new Republican Speaker Mike Johnson was forced to reach across the aisle to Democrats when hard-right conservatives revolted against his plan.
"Johnson’s proposal to temporarily fund the government into the new year passed on a bipartisan 336-95 tally, but 93 Republicans voted against it."

With many Republicans refusing to back more government spending, Democrats supplied the bulk of the votes to extend federal funding through early 2024

"The two-step plan extends funding until January 19 for priorities including military construction, Veterans Affairs, transportation, housing and the Energy Department. The rest of the government — anything not covered by the first step — would be funded until February 2."

Even the most wingnutty Repubs have been so embarrassed by all the drama that they don't want a shutdown--and see it as a good way to lose the House--but they can't get together on a GOP bill and they've created this monster that won't allow them to pass a clean CR with Dem votes. Long post but incredibly well-written - loved this bit in particular:
"In recent years, it seems like the whole world has become more ornery. Maybe that has something to do with the pandemic, or with political disagreements. Whatever the reason, people have become faster to attack, and slower to recognize each other’s shared humanity."
Commander #MikeJohnson's (R- #Gilead) #government #funding plan would mean a government #shutdown crisis every two weeks! He wants staggered, individual funding for every department as opposed to a single, unified funding package. This guy is really fucking stupid.

if i know anything about Pelosi and Schumer, is that they've always used a crisis to triangulate a deal that most people didn't even KNOW was on the table. triangulation is the DNCC'ers machiavellism game.
i don't think neither Pelosi nor Schumer believe much will change if Jeffries were speaker today.

Hang on. We can’t affect the pay of congresspeople due to the Constitution… but we CAN fine them for each day of a #shutdown. Okay, *we* can’t directly, but the government can.
Obviously they wouldn’t pass such a law themselves, but I think state governments could, say, pass a law to levy a state tax penalty equal to the daily portion of a congressperson’s salary for each day the federal government remains closed.
Would they do this? Probably not! But it’s an option… 🤔

Many federal employees could earn more in the private sector – and a #shutdown makes them update their resumes and try to do just that.
"It is not a coincidence that the same people seeking to wreck our democracy and thwart the will of the majority are the ones who deny the climate emergency. They thrive on disorientation and are threatened by resilience. They know that it is far too easy to break things, which is their only talent. They then use the cacophony of recrimination and finger-pointing to protect their power."

One side effect of a government #shutdown is people are going to get a reminder of how important the government actually is.
Here's an example.
The National Flood Insurance Program expires alongside the government's funding at 12:01 a.m. Sunday. If lawmakers do not reauthorize the program, about 1,300 property closings each day could be delayed.
There will be thousands of other reminders of what the government actually does for us.
A reminder to all journalists: most in the GOP don't MIND a government shut down because a core of their philosophy is disemboweling government and then complaining how government doesn't work. The impacts to people, the economy, and the environment don't matter to them.
