Ich habe keinen Bock darauf #signal zu verteidigen. Gegen Fanboys/girls ist das eh zwecklos. Es möge sich jeder selbst ein Bild der ktuellen Sachlage machen. Letztlich weis ich auch nicht was auf dem CH-Serverpool von Threema tatsächlich abgeht.
Was man nicht selber hostet, hat man nicht unter Kontrolle. Und selbst dann. Serverprovider, Rechenzentrum. Die könnten ja auch eventuell und so....

if I change the phone number that I use for #Signal, while using the same device, my contacts will "may" see that the phone number has changed, but they will not see that the safety number has changed? i.e. because it is the same install of the app, the safety number should remain identical through the phone number change?

Bei mir dreht #Signal plötzlich durch: teilweise bekomme ich gar keine Push Benachrichtigungen, und dann bekomme ich plötzlich Notifications für die selbe Nachricht immer wieder. Ist das nur bei mir oder haben noch andere das Problem?
So as a little hobby project I'm writing a little bot framework (read: bot, not chat AI) for Signal, sitting on top of the wonderful signal-cli. I'd love to hear what sorts of features people would want, but here's what I have so far:
Written in Python 3.11 and fully asyncio.
Able to register "personalities" for different contacts/groups.
Personalities can register callbacks for:Any message
Messages with a prefix (e.g., /help foobar).
Messages containing keywords.
A cron schedule.
Send messages, attachments, images, formatted Messages, etc.
Anyhow, I'd love to hear what else people could make use of! I haven't studied many bot frameworks so I'm not sure what they often provide.
Bei #Signal liegt das daran, dass wenn du deine Kontakte hochlädst, sie unmittelbar nachdem der "wer hat eigentlich auch Signal"-Abgleich stattgefunden hat, schon wieder gelöscht werden. Die Signal-Server garantieren das deiner Signal-App sogar kryptografisch, was schon ziemlich cool ist. Gespeichert wird da nichts, du (bzw. deine Signal-App) bekommst direkt nach Abschluss der Abgleichprozedur schon eine kryptografische Bestätigung der Server, dass die Daten wieder weg sind.
Irgendwie ist das sehr krass, dass #Messenger wie #whatsapp, #telegram oder #Signal ungestraft hochgeladene Kontakte irgendwie und besonders irgendwo speichern und der User keine Möglichkeit hat eine saubere Löschung aller Daten nach Deinstallation der App zu bekommen.

I really need to find a new #SMS app for #Android. I used to use #Signal, and sure, it didn't mean any better security or #privacy for the normal messages, but at least everything was together, and the layout was quite nice.
I've just been using the built-in Messages app for a while now, and it sucks. I don't like the layout at all, or the constant pop-ups asking me if I want to sign away my privacy to enable some sort of live chat feature (I already said no, damn it!).
So, what's everyone using? I'd especially appreciate recs from #blind and #VisuallyImpaired folks, or something that can be gotten on #FDroid.

It's OK for #Twitter and #Reddit to paywall their API. It's their service. It's OK for #Discord to forbid the use of third party clients. It's their platform. The only people we should blame are the ones who are complaining about it while still using those services and platforms. There are more than enough alternatives like #Mastodon, #Matrix, #Signal, #Pixelfed... Stop whining and sucking the 🍆 of these nightmare companies, and make the switch. It's not that hard.

I am currently using the #Silence #App #SilenceApp, with #OpenBoard (De-Googled keyboard), but it doesn't have web/PC access, and #Signal with those people that use it, even though I hate the fact it's linked to your number, and not an ID (such as #Threema/#ThreemaLibre) or nothing...

After Signal removed sms: my wife and kid. That's it.
TBH, the only reason I started using Signal was the sms integration. Some of the security features are nice, but not nice enough to get most people to use two different apps to text, at least within my local sample size.

Tried for over a year to get my photography club onto #Signal (from WhatsApp). Ultimately, one single issue forced us to give up: notifications.
New users often don't use the app frequently, causing it to "fall asleep". Many group members were not getting any notifications and missed conversations.
Signal offers guides to attempt to fix this, but those proved too technical for some.
@signalapp I’m in with 5 bucks a month, and have been since the donation feature was introduced. I like Signal, use it a lot, and I agree it’s very important in the grand scheme of things. Compared to what my cellphone provider charges me, 5€ is a bargain!🤑

That's an old trick.
First they offer you a product for free. They build a huge userbase which is dependent on their service. Then they gradually take away what was once free or introduce changes which everyone hates. Despite that, users cling to the service.

Switched from #Google to #DuckDuckGo. Switched from #GMail to #ProtonMail. Switched from #Whatsapp to #Signal (partially). Switched form #Twitter to #Mastodon (almost copletely).

Ohmy. Because of #Signal being unable to properly support multiple accounts on one (multi-sim) device, I am running a clone of the signal app using an "App Cloner" tool for Android. Works nicely, I just got two different signal installs, one private, one work.
Recently someone introduced me to the tool #Shelter https://github.com/PeterCxy/Shelter which let's one use the "Work Profile" ability on Android and allows one to clone apps (or install them there again) inside it. Nice tool, like it, clear separation of areas, and one click can turn off the whole work profile. And shelter makes this easy to use.
Except. With #signal. No idea why, or how, but as soon as I transfer my account (using a backup) into the Work profile signal - it stops working. For everyone I am connected with. That is, groups simply do not let ANYONE send or receive anything. Messages from me to anyone do not pass and vice versa do not pass.
Transfer account back to the other clone - and hey, it all works again. Repeatable.

If you can't do #SelfCustody of the #PrivateKeys and don't have 100% control over these, then consider said #encryption to be easily #MITM'd and / or #backdoored.

Parents at my kids’ school are starting group chats and have chosen #WhatsApp as the platform, not paying attention to the long list of privacy issues. Is there a way to avoid succumbing to #Meta’s evil without being left out of potentially important information? I’m happy to try and encourage a shift to #Signal or something, but you know how hard it can be to convince others to change what they’re used to.

I'm always so bummed when people say they prefer WhatsApp to #Signal because the latter is so buggy, because that's literally the opposite of the truth. I remember it being a joke among our friend group that WhatsApp doesn't even consistently do its inconsistencies (e.g. jumping to the bottom of a thread instead of the last unread message), but somehow people consider that acceptable.
I am seriously thinking about trying #Telegram today, just to try it out again, especially with#TweeseCake, I'm really curious about Telegram's integration with this app. I love TweeseCake so that's why I want to try it with Telegram. I am not trying to say that Telegram will be my favourite app, but since it offers usernames I guess I should try it again. Another reason is that many people still use it. #Threema is a good app according privacy, but nobody uses it, and it doesn't have a stable and functional desktop client, and it's paid so my friends and most of the people won't use it. Hope #Signal will add usernames really soon.
@Piciok Then I guess I will consider that, I would use #Signal more, or I would even switch to Signal completely if it had the ability of creating an username, because I really like the sound quality it offers, hope that I can still use Telegram for iOS, for sending messages and calls at least. Other things I can do on my PC.

@mbootsman @fschaap Voor mij is volhouden helemaal niet lastig. Ik stuur nieuwe contacten eerst een paar keer een SMS, daarna een uitnodiging voor #signal. Eigenlijk ben ik nog meer een voorstander van #matrix, maar mijn meeste contacten heb ik nu al "gedwongen" signal te gebruiken, dus daar hou ik het voorlopig maar bij.
It would be a shame if everyone who knows any LGBTQIA+ person in Florida suddenly began insistently refusing to communicate with them using anything other than encrypted messenger apps, forcing everyone to download and begin using them, and then the government could no longer identify and track people and intercept or subpoena any conversations for whatever nefarious uses they have planned.

@msavoritias @downey Yes, true, that's why we #Blind people have to use the most popular apps, such as #WhatsApp, even if they are not giving too much of a privacy, but they are the most accessible, #Signal is accessible, but some things need to be improved.
