Oooh, I think I prefer this shot of Claife Viewing Station. It is a very pleasing spot.

A photo taken from within the Claife Viewing Station, looking through a window with no glass for the most part, but the rim is panels of coloured glass through which the sun shines and casts coloured shadows on the metal floor. Lake Windermere can be seen through the window, with hills in the distance. The majority of the picture is a cloudscape of relatively low, close drifting clouds, dark on their near faces and lighter grey on the parts facing the distant sunrise, visible at the bottom of the picture. At the bottom of the picture the sky is an intense golden yellow above a dark silhouetted suburban skyline and thin strip of distant grey cumulus, slowly graduating through a slate blue to dark blue, with stars and moon at the top of the frame.

A vivd sunrise over a black, silhouetted suburban ridgeline.
Running along the bottom of the frame are the black outlines of trees, roofs, utility poles and wires, all following an undulating ridgeline. Immediately above them the sky is a fiery yellow and orange, the clouds lit up by the almost-risen sun. Higher in the sky again the clouds are more scattered, and variously dark grey, light grey and orange-pink, depending on their height and location. One band of cloud across the middle of the frame is a striking dark grey, contrasting with the orange below and pink above.

Other trees and bushes are on the left side of the photo, also reflected on the water surface. The right side of the photo shows practically nothing, as the fog consumes the background.

The photo appears to be black-and-white but because little light was getting through the fog, it gives the illusion of a monochromatic image.

A dramatic cloudscape at sunrise in black and white.
Running along the bottom of the frame is a long suburban ridgeline in silhouette, with the outlines of trees and roofs. Two very large trees stand out at different parts of the skyline, each reaching up almost to the base of the lowest cloud bank, or so it seems. The sun has just risen, but is obscured behind the lowest, heaviest cloudbank, however its light is streaming both down and up, illuminating some clouds and throwing rays back towards the ground. Higher up in the frame there are dark wisps of low cloud, and behind them, much higher white cloud illuminated by the sun.

After never visiting our nation's capitol, I found myself in Washington DC twice last year. Both times I got to spend time in this hallowed space, amid extreme crowds and also early with no one around. I enjoyed taking in people's reactions and hope they also felt the weight of history as I did.

A dawn shot at right-angles across the Brisbane river. The coppery light from the sky is reflected with added purple tones from the slightly rippled river, making the whole picture paradoxically light despite the near darkness. On the river, close to the near bank are two six-person canoes, the paddlers' arms and paddles poised for a stroke. The boats and paddlers, like the opposite riverbank, are completely dark, and are seen in silhouette against the shining sky and water.

An ancient squashed cornet, framed at the back of the bandroom. Balancing on top of the frame is the coach sign from the film Brassed Off that reads "Grimley Colliery Brass Band". The cornet was run over by a reversing band coach. The driver was convinced someone had put it there deliberately, but no-one ever owned up...
