There are so many things I want to do that I don't have the skills for, and it's intimidating to start learning.
I want to learn how to sew, so I can make my own clothes and costumes.
I want to learn soldering, electronics, so I can integrate them into props.
I want to learn mechanical engineering so I can create mechanisms, or at least understand what mechanism I need to accomplish a task.
I want to learn enough programming to create a ren.py story with all the advanced features I can think of.
Leather working, blacksmithing, lockpicking, robotics, diving, music, the list is long. What's in my way? Well time is always a problem, but if I just cut out movies/TV I'd have hours every day to learn. I've taught myself 3d modeling, cooking, cybersecurity, photography, but still I'm reluctant to try learning something new. Fear of failure? Fear of losing something I already have, like another skill won't fit?
I don't know if I need a pill, a motivational tape, or what.

@johnwehrle I actively seek to learn things that I feel will benefit me over time.
I tend to avoid learning things that are of limited utility --- overly specialised, highly particular, or valid for only a brief time.
Things covers a lot of ground, and can include technical skills, life skills, random trivia, languages, academic topics, current events, contemporary culture, etc., etc.
For tech skills: two of the chief reasons I elected to pursue the Unix / Linux paths in the early 1990s was that 1) they were fun and 2) proprietary computer technologies seemed to be limited both in domains of use and duration of applicability. I'd had exposure by then to CPM, MVS, VMS, DOS, Mac (classic), and ... probably a handful of other techs. Several of those were already obsolete or headed that way. The tools I began learning in the mid-to-late 1980s on university Unix accounts continue to serve me today. There's been some churn, but far less than in other domains.
(The recent trends of configuration management, Docker, K8s, Flatpack, etc., do feel increasingly at odds with this. I could be wrong and/or old.)
I've transferred a huge amount of attention I'd once spent on news and current events to philosophy and history. Both the latter tend to have vastly greater staying and/or explanatory power.
I've been working on a handful of languages to varying degrees of intensity and/or competency for years as well. Two or three I can grasp a gist of meaning from (or even better than that), others are ... still very minimal. That along with my etymological obsession do prove useful in grasping English meanings, however.

The American scenario is currently like the pre-WWII expansion of Nazi Germany. Trump issued his ultimatum when he attempted to overthrow the elected government, and even triggered a skirmish on Jan 6. The GOP has had two years to abandon this path, but has refused to do so. Instead they have continued to justify Trump's aggression, they have carved up or co-oped institutions that could oppose them, and they have continued to arm themselves. The rest of us need to be preparing so that we don't get rolled over the way France did in 1940.
The rest of us need to double-down on preparation for the assault that could come at any moment, yet not escalate the conflict uncontrollably when there is still a chance that the normal law enforcement system could substantially neutralize the threat. The obvious avenue is to reinforce and harden our own infrastructure. Twitter has become a far-right propaganda mill with full support of the new owner and would surely shut down any effort to mobilize resistance to the next coup. We need secure and redundant communication networks, ideally under control of the community. We need more professional reporters on the ground all across the country to keep their eyes on the various schemes and refute rightist propaganda. We need robust energy systems that can mitigate sabotage. We need practical vehicles. We need machine shops and experience operating machinery to build what we need. We need the social networks to resist the assault.

Susan David (Harvard Medical School) has an interesting diagram on the relationship between 'hard' #skills & (so-called) #softskills which usefully summarises why so much of UK #education policy is wrong-headed.
Its the soft skills (often built through #arts & humanities, and the #socialsciences) that actually are ever more vital.
That's not to say 'hard' skills are unnecessary, but they are certainly not sufficient!
As she's suggests these (soft skill) attributes really need a better name!

@stephen @shaun @actuallyautistic I think I hear Temple Grandin yelling, “YES!! THAT!” somewhere. She strongly #advocates for connecting young #actuallyautistic people with a #trade or saleable #skills. If they are able to survive higher education then it just broadens their vista.
I, too, had my interest align with decently paying jobs. Still #undiagnosed at the time, I #masked my way through university. I hope we can guide our son similarly. 🤞🤞
