I just realised something ... I was brought up, in #Jamaica, with a very tangential association with my precolonial roots.
My upbringing was very British-influenced and thus very white. My parents spoke about their roots, sure, but what they taught me in terms of cultural norms was the furthest thing from what our roots actually are.
A friend just mentioned their "#Maroon roots" and I am sitting here going ... I know about my #Taino roots and that we were likely not Maroons, but other than that ... I have zero ideas of my roots. I can tell you what a DNA sequencing revealed, I can tell you how an aunt found out about the Taino branch back in our family tree, but I canNOT tell you about the #Slaves in my ancestry.
