I've finally entered the fifth era of my smartphone ownership as my trusty Pixel 2 has this week been replaced with a Pixel 7a. The Pixel 2 gave stellar service over 5 years and still performs well. Unfortunately, I can now reliably one shot kill the phone by taking a photo with the battery below about 60%... The 7a is a bit bigger than I'd like but does feel a bit faster. My #Samsung #smartphone has started to nag me about upgrading the operating system. This upgrade is not in my best interest. It will demand more computing power and make the phone sluggish. I was happy with the original OS it was delivered with. I just want to install the equivalent of Ubuntu on this machine and accept a few high-priority security patches a year, no more.

Testing #smartphone #photography again (used the 2x lens on all because #iOS annoyingly doesn't allow you to force 5x). #Google #Pixel 8 Pro seems to have clipped edge highlights but did well with the bkgd + great contrast, #Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra flattened out + blotched the bkgd + lost some detail, & #Apple #iPhone cranked up the lol dimmer.

Da ich ja jetzt ein neues #Smartphone habe, habe ich auch Bilder aussortiert. Dabei habe ich eine Selektion der schönsten Bilder aus dem #DailyFensterblick der letzten 1,5 Jahre zu einem einfachen kleinen Video zusammen gefügt. Ich musste es ein wenig komprimieren, um es hoch laden zu können, daher ist die Qualität nicht top. Aber ihr kennt die Bilder ja eh schon 😉

I run into a disturbing, and ever-growing, number of web-based #services that simply cannot be accessed without a #smartphone - they want a phone number rather than an #email address to register, they want to #SMS you a PIN (ugh, SS7) to create an account or log in or pretty much anything else.
I choose not to have a #mobile phone - but I'm starting to see even #government/#public services that require one.
I wonder if we'll ever see smartphones break away from the google/apple duopoly. (Which some people would label as a "pick your poison" situation)
They're so powerful now hardware wise, I feel like they're mostly limited by input methods.
But unlike, say, gaming handhelds, I've never seen attempts at new devices that might be able to utilize existing software infrastructures... why?
I just want a #smartPhone with stock/close to stock #Android that is #secure and at least #repairable if not #sustainable as well. Is that too much to ask for?
Most I see either have heating issues, a bloated ROM, don't care about security or are virtually unrepairable. As much as I hate the #iPhone at least it is (generally) durable, well supported and secure.
