Climate snaps routine.
We expect worse, yet change shocks.
Change is worse than worse.

#haiku #senryu #poem #ShortPoem #climate #change #ClimateChange #psychology #sociology #society

Some notes on that...

I often quote the late Prof. Amar Bose, founder of the Bose corporation, from something I heard him say at a lecture to the MIT Enterprise Forum decades ago. He spoke of about the frustration sales people at audio stores expressed about the need to set up Bose equipment differently than other sound equipment. They wanted it to be the same. He said they had to evolve the expression "Better implies different." He explained that one of the characteristics of betterness is that it meant doing something different, breaking routine.

It occurred to me today that this applies in the reverse direction, too. It may seem obvious but we behave as a society as if it's not: We expect Climate Change to make things worse, but we expect those "things" to be the same. We expect to still grow up, go to school, go to stores, chat with friends, go to movies, vacation, travel. And yet Climate Change will create fundamental obstacles that may make these things not just harder but perhaps not possible. Perhaps far sooner than we think. Look at how much a simple thing like Covid affected things, and then multiply that enormously.

In effect, worse implies different.

I don't think we're prepared.

Gravy Train to Oligarchy:

Historian Nancy MacLean explains that Virginia’s white elite and the pro-corporate president of the University of Virginia, Colgate #Darden, who had married into the #DuPont family, found James #Buchanan’s ideas to be spot on.

In nurturing a new intelligentsia to commit to his values, Buchanan stated that he needed a “#gravy #train,” and with backers like Charles #Koch and conservative foundations like the #Scaife Family Charitable Trusts, others hopped aboard.

#Money, Buchanan knew, can be a persuasive tool in academia. His circle of influence began to widen.

MacLean observes that the #Virginia #school, as Buchanan’s brand of economic and political thinking is known, is a kind of cousin to the better-known, market-oriented #Chicago and #Austrian schools — proponents of all three were members of the #Mont #Pelerin #Society, an international neoliberal organization which included Milton #Friedman and Friedrich #Hayek.

But the Virginia school’s focus and career missions were distinct. In an interview with the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), MacLean described Friedman and Buchanan as yin and yang:
“Friedman was this genial, personable character who loved to be in the limelight and made a sunny case for the free market and the freedom to choose and so forth.
"Buchanan was the dark side of this: he thought, ok, fine, they can make a case for the free market, but everybody knows that free markets have externalities and other problems. So he wanted to keep people from believing that government could be the alternative to those problems.”

The Virginia school also differs from other economic schools in a marked reliance on #abstract #theory rather than #mathematics or empirical #evidence.

That a Nobel Prize was awarded in 1986 to an economist who so determinedly bucked the academic trends of his day was nothing short of stunning, MacLean observes. But, then, it was the peak of the #Reagan era, an administration several Buchanan students joined.

Buchanan’s school focused on *public choice theory*, later adding constitutional economics and the new field of law and economics to its core research and advocacy.

The economist saw that his vision would never come to fruition by focusing on *who rules. It was much better to focus on the rules themselves, and that required a “#constitutional #revolution.”

“Generic #Communism designates a #free #associative #egalitarian #society where the activity of #polymorph #workers is not governed by regulations and technical or social articulations but is managed by the #collective power of #needs. In such a society, the #State is dissolved as a separate instance from public coercion. #Politics – much as it voices the interests of social groups and covets at the conquest of power – is de facto dissolved.

Thus, the purpose of #Communist politics aims at its own disappearance in the modality of the end of the form separated from the State in general, even if it concerns a State that declares itself #democratic."
rotenotes

What is the #communist hypothesis? In its generic sense, given in its
canonic Manifesto, ‘communist’ means, first, that the logic of #class—the
fundamental #subordination of #labour to a dominant class, the arrangement
that has persisted since Antiquity—is not inevitable; it can be
overcome. The communist hypothesis is that a different #collective
organization is practicable, one that will eliminate the #inequality of
#wealth and even the division of labour. The #private appropriation of
massive fortunes and their transmission by inheritance will disappear.
The existence of a #coercive #state, separate from #civil #society, will no
longer appear a necessity: a long process of reorganization based on a
#free #association of #producers will see it withering away.

#Communism’ as such denotes only this very general set of intellectual
representations. It is what Kant called an Idea, with a regulatory
function, rather than a programme. It is foolish to call such communist
principles #utopian; in the sense that I have defined them here they are
intellectual patterns, always actualized in a different fashion. As a
pure Idea of #equality, the communist hypothesis has no doubt existed
since the beginnings of the state. As soon as mass action opposes #state
#coercion in the name of #egalitarian #justice, rudiments or fragments of
the hypothesis start to appear. Popular #revolts—the #slaves led by
#Spartacus, the #peasants led by #Müntzer—might be identified as practical
examples of this ‘communist invariant’. With the French Revolution, the
communist hypothesis then inaugurates the epoch of political modernity.

Dark money: The backstory of Alabama's redistricting defiance

APR’s reporting shows the extent to which Alabama’s calculation to #defy the #Supreme #Court was made not simply by state legislators in Alabama but has been driven by nationally connected political operatives at the center of the well-documented right-wing effort to reshape the composition and jurisprudence of the Supreme Court and to overturn the remaining key protections established by the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Despite the organization’s claims that it does not take positions on policies or nominations, former President Donald Trump famously stated that #Leonard #Leo’s #Federalist #Society had “picked” his judges, and all six Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices “were seated with major help from Leonard Leo,” who has come to be known as the “hidden architect of the Supreme Court.”

With few exceptions, the justices Leo has ushered to the bench have reliably voted to permit the partisan gerrymanders and strict restrictions on voting access that have proliferated in recent years from red-state legislatures, which themselves work in tandem with — and sometimes under the direction of — Leo’s dark money groups. https://www.alreporter.com/2023/09/16/dark-money-the-backstory-of-alabamas-redistricting-defiance/

#capitalism only makes the world a better place, when there is a clear overlap between financial incentives and the common good. If there is a conflict between profit and societal benefit, the #market can stifle process. The way in which we develop drugs is such an example. People need to realise you can't change a trans person's gender identity. No matter how much society, parents or family try to force it. I really liked this #StrongTowns article about bringing back a "rail culture" in the #usa.

"Anyone who has seen Union Station knows that we do, in fact, have a history and knowledge as to how to build grand transportation of the sort that once connected a nation."

Not everyone realizes how close our democracy is to failing here in the US, yet we are at a make-or-break moment where we can still do something about it 🧵

Fueled by white nationalist doctrines and playbooks, GOP leaders at federal and state levels are encouraging and stoking violence, voter suppression, and treason...

Someone in an autism facebook group I'm in just asked "How am I supposed to earn enough to make a living without burning out?"

Someone replied: "You're not. Even neurotypicals can't right now in the system designed for them. We're the canaries in the coalmine. When we start failing, they know something is wrong."

Post 2

People keep saying, "Oh, everyone thinks they're neurodivergent now!" or they'll say it's the foods or chemicals or whatever other nonsense they've fallen for, but to me the answer is so obvious?

We've gotten to a point that more and more people are being left behind by the system, making it so that neurodivergent parents who could get by fine *enough* in decades/centuries past are bringing children into a world that cannot and will not attempt to accomodate them. There's nothing in the water, and people aren't faking, it's just that this is no longer sustainable or livable and of course people with disabilities will be hit first and hit the hardest. There aren't more people with it, it's just harder to go through life without being aware that you're not functioning the way your peers seem to be able to.

There are so many stories like this one. There should never be another. And yet, we've rolled back the clock at the behest of religious extremists, so there will be many more. This cannot go on. #Society https://time.com/6303701/a-rape-in-mississippi/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

For years, the platform formerly known as Twitter has been the most popular for Japan’s municipalities to use when sending out natural disaster warnings. That might not be the case anymore. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/japan/2023/08/09/society/japan-prefectures-x-diasaster-warnings/?utm_content=buffera606b&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #japan #society #twitter #x #socialmedia #typhoons #kumamoto #okinawa #kagoshima

Hey, sounds like my middle school experience! This is important for me to understand as a parent, and it's important for schools to adapt to as de facto caregivers. Observing traditional social media, it seems that "we" are all becoming our own promotional advertisements on a daily basis.
Many people now live solely for self-promotion and get upset when it doesn't happen. What an interesting society we have today!

‘I cried with anger’: the trials and torment when travelling with blindness

‘Help’ ranges from being accused of faking it to being offered a wheelchair. That’s why society needs to be educated about the nuances of sight loss.
