Twice in my career I found in a company's codebase the following line of code:
srand(rand());
This was in commercial products.
Not only does this show a significant misunderstanding of how these work, but even more importantly it clearly showed that the developers hadn't bothered to test their code. #cpp #randomness #sourcecode
While modifying the meld tabstop from 8 to 4 characters this evening, I was reminded of a job I had in the mid 1990s where the company's code style required us to set our tab stops to strange and uneven values such as "3 7 11 13 18 characters".

This is very interesting news. I’d be all for someone reviving the NeXT as a hobbyist hardware platform, maybe atop those RK3588 ARM chips (even with Motorola 680x0 emulation, it would be a pretty amazing thing to see).(...)

Data Strategy: Gitlab + Google
Google has announced a partnership with GitLab to expand AI-Assisted capabilities. This is another example of how vital data assets will become as we shift to data-hungry LLMs. You wouldn't expect Google to partner to obtain data to improve their models, but there are just two major players when it comes to source code.
Atlassian is a prominent name that needs to be added to the mix of AI-Assisted Coding products. While the BitBucket marketplace allows for Code Review Assistants, it has not yet announced any significant headway in this space, similar to the announced Atlassian Intelligence enhancements for Jira and Confluence.
One may argue that this concerns Atlassian's inability to use privately hosted code versus GitLab and GitHub, which boast much larger open-source communities. This is an area to monitor, particularly based on legal outcomes for copyright use cases associated with source code.

The code leaker using the alias"FreeSpeechEnthusiast," obviously referers to Elon Musk calling himself a free speech absolutist and suggests that the leaker is a disgruntled Twitter employee.
It is not known exactly when the source code was leaked, but according to The New York Times,"it appeared to have been public for at least several months."

When are we going to get #Codex/#ChatGPT-ops? I mean, if #SourceCode is partially generated, surely the prompts need to be stored in #Git as well. And if changes are committed to prompts, the #LargeLanguageModel needs to be automatically re-run to generate updated #code.
In some cases, the #prompts to the code generation model need to have source code injected from other code files, both for making sure the model knows how to interface with them, and in some cases in the style of "do this but fix the #SQL injection errors" iterative improvement.
This of course requires some file format to template the prompts.
Also, the language models could be injected as #build plug-ins to the code, in pom.xmls in #Maven and through other mechanisms with other build tools.
Perhaps we'll need #Jenkins plug-ins for those build steps.

Apart from the fact that I don't like to outsource my internal communication in the company, this is a further loss of trust. Just stealing the code doesn't necessarily mean anything, but if it was poorly implemented, then yes, there are other attack factors.

In programming variables are often $items or $categories. Here the developer is happy with cats. (They are actually training categories).
I don't trust any proclaimed property of closed-source, #proprietary #sourcecode by companies: they might have implemented as advertised or not, they may change it with any update, they may have huge security issues you can never ever check.
