📆 1999 #NASA lost its $125-million #Mars #ClimateOrbiter because #spacecraft engineers failed to convert from English to #metric measurements 📏 when exchanging vital data before the craft was launched.
None of #JPL’s rigorous quality control procedures caught the error 🐞 in the nine months it took the spacecraft to make its 461-million-mile flight to #Mars 🔴. The miscalculations were enough to throw the spacecraft so far off track that it flew too deeply into the #Martian atmosphere and was destroyed 💥 when it entered its initial #orbit around Mars https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1999-oct-01-mn-17288-story.html

So would love to see a spacecraft similar to the twin GRACE-FO spacecraft that are mapping groundwater on Earth.

A similar mission for mapping potential subsurface water on Mars in detail, who knows maybe there are still aquifiers deep down with secrets from a long distant wet past.

A cover of the Nature Astronomy Journal, dated August 2021.

Voyager 1’s Plasma Wave System previously relied on coronal mass ejection-driven shock excitation of plasma to measure the density of the medium through which it was passing. However, as reported here, a very weak, narrowband, plasma oscillation has now been identified that enables the continuous measurement of the density of the interstellar medium beyond the heliosphere.

Back to some space history neepery, hmm? I've previously spoken of the 1964 World's Fair in New York City as a last gasp of 20th century techno-optimism, and this is a little bit more from it. It's art of the Hall of Science's "movie hall", showing a Martin Marietta station and spaceship. It was printed in the Souvenir Book of the fair.

#WorldsFair #retrofuturism #1960s #space #spacecraft

The top half of this picture shows a lifting-body style spacecraft docking with a cylindrical space station. The station has a radio antenna, three rocket engines at one end, and a US flag painted on the side.

In the lower half we see a large movie screen with people standing underneath it watching a film. The film is showing the same spacecraft rising up from the Earth with a gout of flame behind it. A thin crescent moon is hanging over the edge of the Earth's horizon.
The cover of the "New York's World Fair 1964/1965 Official Souvenir Book". The cover is white (though faded with age) and various rectangular photos showing "cultural things" and rectangles of solid colour in the cover's bottom half. The first image in the toot can be seen at a much smaller size in the lower left.

The pad (other than a fence) certainly looks great after that static fire. The "booster bidet" system seems to be working exactly as needed and the concrete around it is fully intact. If we have all 33 engines working this will mean the chances of a second Starship test launch in the next few weeks look to be quite high.

This is the other picture by Northrop's "Todd" I mentioned yesterday. It's the N-205, which was proposed in 1958 as a trainer for the X-15 and Dyna-Soar.

While it's "just" a variant on the T-38 which is used down to this day as a more conventional supersonic jet training plane, this one is in my area of interest because of how it was to be flown. With a rocket assist, it would have done a ballistic arc up to 60+ kilometers (and almost 87 km in a later version). SPA-ACE!

A painting of a black, stubby-winged airplane zooming up and to the right into the edge of space, with a yellow-green cloudy Earth (showing a bit of curvature) underneath it. It is labelled USAF on the wings and N-205 on its tail. The signature of the artist ("Todd") is in one corner.

Russia’s Luna-25 probe crashes on the moon

#Luna25 : #Roscosmos said that measures to find and re-establish contact 📶 with the craft had failed, and that it calculated the failure of the adjustment meant that Luna-25 had deviated from its planned #orbit and “ceased its existence as a result of a #collision 💥 with the lunar surface.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/20/science/russia-moon-space-crash.html

#Telegram message : "On August 19, at about 14:57 Moscow time, communication with the Luna-25 #spacecraft was interrupted.
Measures implemented on August 19 and 20 to search for the spacecraft and communicate with it did not yield any results.
According to the results of preliminary analysis, due to the deviation of actual pulse parameters from the calculated ones, the spacecraft moved to a non-calculated orbit and ceased to exist as a result of collision with the surface of the #Moon.
A specially formed interdepartmental commission will investigate the reasons for the loss of the Luna."

A cover of Science Magazine, dated 12 October 2007, featuring a montage of images of Jupiter and its moon Io, taken from the spacecraft New Horizons. On Jupiter, high-altitude clouds are shown in blue and deeper clouds in red. The bluish-white oval is the Great Red Spot. Just visible in the Io image is an ongoing volcanic eruption on its nightside, in which incandescent lava glows red beneath a high volcanic plume lit by sunlight.

My current #SF movie bugbear: Non-rotating #spacecraft with a large rotating section for the human habitat. Bonus points if the habitable part spans both the rotating and non-rotating portions and the crew can move freely between them.

It's an absurdly complex #engineering challenge to build it this way, it introduces an open set of failure modes that would not otherwise exist and there's no good reason for any of it that I can think of.

Instead, rotate the whole ship, and if there are a few things which for some reason must not be rotated (scopes, antennae and cameras, perhaps?) place them in the smallest and simplest possible unpressurised nonrotating segment at the axis.

A cover of the Nature Journal featuring an artist's view of Jupiter's moon Europa, where the surface terrain has been disrupted.

DESCRIPTION: The Galileo spacecraft revealed a number of 'chaos' regions on Jupiter's moon Europa, where the surface terrain appears to have been disrupted from below. In many places, the surface contains sharp-edged blocks or rafts of ice that have at some point been flipped or rotated. Thera Macula, a large chaos area, may indicate that Europa is actively resurfacing over a lens comparable in volume to North America's Great Lakes. The cover depicts the lake below Thera Macula, with fractures, icebergs and matrix forming above it and disrupting the surface.

An artist's rendition of the Kepler-9 system in which two Saturn-size planets transit the same star. The radii of the planets are roughly 8% of the radius of the star, which itself is 10% larger in radius than our Sun. Timing variations in the transits of these planets provide a signature of their gravitational interaction and can be used to establish their masses.

With Enceladus making the headlines for the detection, in data taken by the Cassini spacecraft Cosmic Dust Analyzer, of phosphates originating in its subsurface ocean, let's enjoy this 2015 Nature cover featuring some simulated eruptions from fractures in the moon's surface.

Simulated uniform curtain eruptions overlain on Cassini image N1637461416 adapted to make the erupted material visible. Images taken by the Cassini probe have revealed large fractures bounded by rifts towards the south pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus. These features, popularly known as "tiger stripes", reach higher temperatures than their surroundings and are thought to be the sources of observed jets of water vapour and icy particles. Joseph Spitale et al. compare Cassini images with simulated curtains of material erupting from Enceladus' south-polar terrain to produce detailed maps of the emissions at various times. Much of the eruptive activity can be explained by broad, curtain-like eruptions, many of which were probably misinterpreted previously as discrete jets. Phantom jets in the synthesized curtains correspond closely to regions of enhanced brightness in the Cassini images. NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute/Planetary Science Institute.
