‘It’s amazing’: scientists analyse 4.6bn-year-old dark dust from Bennu asteroid | Asteroids | The Guardian

A teaspoon’s worth of dark dust and granules scooped from an asteroid 200m miles from Earth has arrived at the Natural History Museum in London, where scientists are preparing to unlock its secrets.

Researchers at the museum received 100mg of the pristine material, which at 4.6bn years old dates back to the dawn of the solar system, after Nasa’s Osiris-Rex mission stopped at asteroid Bennu in 2020 and returned samples to Earth in September.

The spacecraft briefly touched down on Bennu, an asteroid that has a 1-in-1,750 chance of colliding with Earth in the next 300 years, and gathered more than 60g of untouched material, the largest amount brought back from space since the Apollo program.

Apollo 11 (Edition unread package insert) is a project using the computer to step once more into territory unknown to human beings.

The mission was completed in 2019, the 50 years anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon, where the computer was instrumental in enabling the astronauts for humans first step on the moon.

Today, 50 years later, the computer serves more than ever to generate new concepts and to advance into new spheres. In this project, the components of the commercially available scale-modelling set of Apollo 11 (Columbia & Eagle) were entered into a computer.

Using a machine learning algorithm, the computer created five different ways to assemble the model. These five models were all assembled far away from the instructions of the package insert coming along with the scale-modelling set and thus show a push into new dimensions previously untouched by human hands.

Future Moon and Mars Rovers Have a New Sandbox to Learn in

Engineers in Europe have so many rover concepts they're working on that they built a new test site to practice in. The facility is called Moon-Mars Test Site, and it's a recreation of the terrain you might encounter on the Moon and Mars. This will let engineers iterate on their rover designs quickly, exploring 1500 square meters of simulated regolith and rock. The facility also has a tunnel, a crater, various hills, rocks, gullies, and sand dunes that replicate what rovers might encounter on the Moon and Mars.

Chinese Astronauts May Build a Base Inside a Lunar Lava Tube

The surface of the Moon is a harsh environment, with high amounts of radiation and temperature extremes, in a near vacuum. There are naturally formed lava tubes on the Moon that might help solve some of these problems, protecting astronauts much better than the lunar surface. Researchers in China are investigating ways of setting up a long-term shelter on the Moon inside a lava tube based on exploring Earth's lava tubes. They recently presented their study at a space conference in Shanghai.
