When it comes to predatory invertebrates, Australia really doesn't mess around. Here's a few of my favourites shots from my recent trip round 'Straya.
We have, in order, a praying mantis, a Victoria funnel-web spider, a blue garden flatworm, and a little scorpion who posed very patiently for me!
2018. I was going to bin this. This is a close crop and I have better shots of this #butterfly but then I look at the goings on under the flower head. The #wasp was probably going to have the butterfly, but a #spider has the wasp. You can just make out the spider legs. Butterfly has escaped two predators. #Commonblue #commonbluebutterfly #insect #flower #naturephotography #insects #sandwasp
I like Huntsmen #spider from the genus Holconia, because they are big fellows and go for even bigger preys !
Here's a probably subsubadult male which caught a massive locust
(and I made a short 3mn video about this species last year because it's one of my fav to keep !

#macro #spider #arachnida #focusstack
Sometimes you just gotta ask a witch near you to fuck around so you can find out. What kinda divination/answers do you think she'll yield at the end? :inv_pentagram:

Hm, wie druckt man diese Luftnummer? Die Brücke (blaue Linien), machen einen Bogen.
Mit normalem Support unmöglich zu erreichen.
Tree-Support windet sich durch die Gänge, aber wie bekomme ich das wieder raus?

This is a male Aussie bronze jumping spider (Helpis minitabunda), an introduced species to New Zealand from Australia.
Jumping spiders such as this have excellent vision (check out those two large front-facing eyes), which they use to stalk their prey until they're within pouncing distance!
If you want to remove a spider from your flat but you're disgusted or slightly scared (very mild #arachnophobia), here's a trick:
1. Give the spider a name (like "Susy" or "Steven").
2. When approaching the spider with the glas jar, talk to it in a soothing voice, using its name, as if calming it down ("now, Susy, it's fine, just a glass jar, you'll be okay").
For me this does actually work.
This is a quick capture and stack of "The Spider and the Fly Nebula". I'm not sure this region is going to make my list of primary targets, but I filled some time before and after Orion over the last two nights to accrue 49 x 5 minute subs for a grand total of 4h5m. What do you think? Should I keep imaging it?
Pretty sure I just found a killed a brown recluse #spider . Yikes!
We get a lot of garden spiders, and I always leave them be, but something about this one struck me as unusual,
Rabbi Google's impression led me to not take any chances
I kid you not, I'd literally just written 'Tectonic tentacles' ( dont ask other than its connected to my art) when I saw this spider heading up my jumper towards my neck. I'm sort of OK with spiders, but this was pushing it! I've evicted it now. it can find a new gaff. if it had been my 30 year old granddaugher, she would have had the screaming abdabs! #spider #Art #mastodon #fediverse
This little jumping buddy lives in my messy desk, and sometimes it goes out to snoop around. Today I notice it kinda slow, and I saw it has a missing leg 😭 poor thing, seems to have problems with climbing. Maybe it's an old spider? I'm not sure how old is it, but I read they lose agility over time 😭
I don't normally keep spiders, but having a widow this time of year is good for doing spider presentations. I got her just a couple days after my last presentation so this was her first time out. She was very cooperative.
Only three more days in Arachtober. This spider hangs on her beaded line, for Day 28. In the Arachtober pool. https://www.flickr.com/photos/wanderin_weeta/53291806750/in/pool-arachtober/

Check out this stunning lettered peacock spider (Maratus literatus)!
DYK: Peacock spiders are so-named due to the males' colourful iridescent patterns on their abdomens, which they display during courtship.
This particular species of jumping spider wasn’t described until 2014!
For #arachtober I repost this wolf spider found on the wall of the house this summer.
Started cleaning its legs when I took the photo and then it run away. The body was nearly 2cm long.

This tiny toddler of a Grayish Jumping Spider (Phidippus princeps) looks like a child be scolded. I don't know what I did to it, but I sure am sorry. Perhaps its ashamed of my lack of diffusion as well... Seen in Manassas National Battlefield Park
It was too much like cheating... Here is the spider it was on. This was taken at 1.4x as that was as wide as I could go with the MP-E. I believe this was a tarantula, but please correct me if it isn't. It didn't seem to care at all that there were hoppers on it. Yes, there was a second of a different species. *Shrug*
