Ridley Scott says his "Napoleon" is the first to portray the Egyptian campaign.
I was using it, through poetic allegory, to interrogate Western imperialism in relation to Gulf War 2, BITD (early Oughts).

Yas & The Lightmotiv ~ Tout Doux Baby
Une chanson qui m'est restée dans la tête un bon moment quand j'ai découvert ce groupe.
First album on bandcamp : https://yasandthelightmotiv.bandcamp.com/album/yas-the-lightmotiv
Not a song - spoken word with music background - but I hear it as a protest lament.
(Someone else posted this and I saw it on my feed, but of course there's no way to find it again, on Mastodon.)
William Burroughs, "Thanksgiving Prayer" (1986)
My first book of poems "Joe the Dream" (Chicago Bagman Press, CHI 1990) is also available a Amazon & elsewhere but via Bandcamp I can now offer first editions myself.
"Joe the Dream", 1st edition fine paperback at #bandcamp along w/recordings of selections therein.
It all happened so suddenly. But these things always do. I had volunteered with a church youth group because I knew how boring small town summers could get for a kid. And now I was to be a guest preacher one Sunday. No notice. No training. Just head up there and see what the Holy Spirit has to say. It went about as well as you might expect. A 20 minute Andy Kaufman meets Jesus bit that was recorded for those would couldn't make it. "The Building Decayeth" is why I've never ran for office with any atheist group. I know that tape will pop up in oppo research. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #religion #SpokenWord
Dating has never been easy. I'm not sure the Internet helps. We had talked a lot on AIM waiting for the roads to be cleared after a big storm. Headed out soon after. I was picked up and taken to the next county over somewhere around midnight. Both in our sleep clothes. It was less scary than it sounds. People share online. But you get much more as they share their personal space. "The Slab" is about tiny pieces of self people never think to include. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord
People from the city of Palatka seem to dislike my story about the place. A brief stop for gas and a drink becomes a glimpse into small town Florida living. Optimism, frustration, and violence. We can only tell the stories we have. And this is what "Palatka" gave me that day. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord

I believed in Pro Wrestling much longer than Santa or the Tooth Fairy. While barely in school I had guessed who was really exchanging the tooth under my pillow for a quarter. But Pro Wrestling took longer to sort. I suppose it is like this for many fans. We want to believe. "The Pussycat King" is about a local pro wrestling dream. Big plans in a small town. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord #wrestling
Karate classes never gave me Fists of Fury. It was mostly all a lesson in humility. An anti-Dunning-Kruger Manifesto. Even simple tasks take practice to do well. And everything is harder as you are watched. "Pine Boards" is about learning these things once the only video store in town closes. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord #karate

A lot happened "Off Tower Road." There is a complicated early morning triple date to a botanical garden, my scariest alligator, encounter, and talk of Pol Parsley the Thai Elvis. That same gator later took off the arm of a garden employee. And for anyone who has doubts about Pol Parsley? Now we have proof! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpKBvF3ea4c& #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord #elvis
Growing up churches in my small hometown would have a fish fry and sing near weekly. Free to all. Just bring a side if you could. Piles of fried mullet shared a table with a dozen dishes of macaroni and cheese. Banana pudding for dessert. "A Deep Connection" is about family and community. You know everyone. And they are kin. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord
yesterday: so bright yet dark matter crept into my stream. The quote is from Jack Kornfield.

Also for Bandcamp Friday a re-release of a CD my partner Rex Tangle & I made in '04, featuring my allegorical "Napoleon" poems inspired by Gulf War II.
Selections were featured on VPRO/Radio Netherlands, introduced by the late, great Wouter Pleijsier ("the Melvyn Bragg of the Netherlands"), a thrilling affirmation.
"A Foggy Oasis" by our duo Quoil.
For this Bandcamp Friday, my new Digital Album "Vanderwater Variations: Poems Set to Music."
Especially excited to share here b/c you all are much more responsive to work like this than at the Other Place.
Best day to give support for independent artists (we get to keep more of your donations!).
When young I attended church. There I was told to memorize Bible verses. They would be of use in life. Which was true. Just not in the ways intended. "They Say Truth Matters Most" is about writing and reflection. Working with a question – "Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?" #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #truth #SpokenWord
I had just walked in the door that day. Heard the radio say "... be caller #4!" A call later I had tickets to Lollapalooza 3. It was a GenX teen pop culture dream! "There Are Prizes To Be Won" is about winning. But also class divides. What can and can't be bought in life. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #music #alternative #90s #SpokenWord
At times I get asked – "Why did you spend so much time at that seedy truck stop as a pre-teen?" These are not the usual summer plans. "I Set The High Score" is a kid trying to fill up a summer. Much of it spent at a stop off I-75. With an aunt selling pills to truckers. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #pinball #SpokenWord
Describing writing as Southern Gothic implies a great many content warnings. There will be self abuse. There will be death. "A Mason Jar" is one of the harsher stories I've shared. It is also first in my book. An uncle loses faith in ideas of Manliness and honor. It ends poorly. And begins a narrative thread. Not death. Access. Even as a kid I was there. We were spared nothing. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SouthernGothic #SpokenWord
"Don't meet your heroes!" they say. And that is certainly what they told us as we arrived in Inverness to meet Piers Anthony. It was a bad idea even for the 90s. A few teens in a beat up car and $20 heading south to cold call a known author. Getting directions to his place was easy but it all came with a warning – "Don't!" #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #books #fantasy #puns #90s #SpokenWord
Growing up in a tiny Florida town ideas of "Manliness" were well defined. The No True Scotsman fallacy violating list was seemingly endless – from dress to job to bad habits. There were no off days. When not at that Manly Job you needed a Manly Hobby. "Rural Rite" is a live recording that discusses hunting as right of passage. The pressure to conform. And the absurdity of that request. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord
I record everything I write. It becomes a part of the editing process. If it is my story, my words and my voice.. shouldn't it read well? "Tiny Scars" was a request. A friend talking about how we drove an hour at 16 to get her nipples pierced. But it expanded a bit from there to discuss ideas of home and belonging. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord

American drummer Keith LeBlanc released the song “No Sell Out”
It’s a hip hop piece composed by LeBlanc and credited to Malcolm X.
It marked the one of the earliest usages of sample-based composition in popular music as well as being the first hip hop song to use Malcolm X's voice for artistic and political reasons, approved by and with a foreword from Dr. Betty Shabazz included in the liner notes.
It’s got that early 80s rap sound, with simple beats and extensive samples from various speeches.
Maybe there should be like a spoken word fork of Audacity?
But I want to emphasize that I do truly appreciate all the hard work put in for free in creating Audacity, and am thankful that I have this tool! Especially since I can't code myself. I understand that this is not easy to make, and I'm not demanding anything here. Just some thoughts on how it could be even better for my use case. :)
new blog post, sharing a video piece i made towards the end of last month in response to the CIRCA 20:23 open call and manifesto with the theme 'HOPE: THE ART OF READING WHAT IS NOT YET WRITTEN' (https://circa.art/manifesto-2023/)
