Ridley Scott says his "Napoleon" is the first to portray the Egyptian campaign.

I was using it, through poetic allegory, to interrogate Western imperialism in relation to Gulf War 2, BITD (early Oughts).

It all happened so suddenly. But these things always do. I had volunteered with a church youth group because I knew how boring small town summers could get for a kid. And now I was to be a guest preacher one Sunday. No notice. No training. Just head up there and see what the Holy Spirit has to say. It went about as well as you might expect. A 20 minute Andy Kaufman meets Jesus bit that was recorded for those would couldn't make it. "The Building Decayeth" is why I've never ran for office with any atheist group. I know that tape will pop up in oppo research. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #religion #SpokenWord

In my teens I volunteered with the Youth Group at Rock Sink Baptist church in the First District area of Old Town, FL. A van traveled unmarked limerock roads picking up kids. During the long pre-Internet summers in rural Florida most were just happy to get out. The usual schedule of touch football and Little Debbies was disrupted with talk of a "Youthquake." The next Sunday service… 4 days away… would be run by us kids. I was selected to be the preacher. Asking for advice on how to prepare I was told that "the Spirit would guide my words…" What followed was 20 minutes of nervous laughter. Fumbling through the Bible I read Ecclesiastes 10:18 (KJV) "By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through" to a few muted cries of "Amen." This ended my career as a Spirit-filled backwoods preacher. I was never asked to preach again. I did realize that in the future I should probably actually prepare as I was going to speak in public.

Dating has never been easy. I'm not sure the Internet helps. We had talked a lot on AIM waiting for the roads to be cleared after a big storm. Headed out soon after. I was picked up and taken to the next county over somewhere around midnight. Both in our sleep clothes. It was less scary than it sounds. People share online. But you get much more as they share their personal space. "The Slab" is about tiny pieces of self people never think to include. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord

People from the city of Palatka seem to dislike my story about the place. A brief stop for gas and a drink becomes a glimpse into small town Florida living. Optimism, frustration, and violence. All 90s dating involved a bit of daring. Just heading out with limited information like some RomCom main character. "A Second Bookmark" sets up a first date with in-store reading. Who knew Vonnegut was so Romantic? #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord #reading

Media Play was a book, music, and movie store with a location off Newberry Road in Gainesville, FL. I used to go read books there. Hit a stopping point. Use a bookmark to save my place. Return later and read more. Once I headed over to work on "Mother Night" and noticed a second bookmark. I left it there. Read some. Advanced my own bookmark. After a bit that other bookmark was a note – "Who else is reading this book!?" We set up a date to talk Vonnegut. I never really understood Media Play's Business Model. But it worked for me.

Describing writing as Southern Gothic implies a great many content warnings. There will be self abuse. There will be death. "A Mason Jar" is one of the harsher stories I've shared. It is also first in my book. An uncle loses faith in ideas of Manliness and honor. It ends poorly. And begins a narrative thread. Not death. Access. Even as a kid I was there. Growing up in a tiny Florida town ideas of "Manliness" were well defined. The No True Scotsman fallacy violating list was seemingly endless – from dress to job to bad habits. There were no off days. When not at that Manly Job you needed a Manly Hobby. "Rural Rite" is a live recording that discusses hunting as right of passage. The pressure to conform. And the absurdity of that request. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord

American drummer Keith LeBlanc released the song “No Sell Out”

It’s a hip hop piece composed by LeBlanc and credited to Malcolm X.

It marked the one of the earliest usages of sample-based composition in popular music as well as being the first hip hop song to use Malcolm X's voice for artistic and political reasons, approved by and with a foreword from Dr. Betty Shabazz included in the liner notes.

It’s got that early 80s rap sound, with simple beats and extensive samples from various speeches.

Maybe there should be like a spoken word fork of Audacity?

But I want to emphasize that I do truly appreciate all the hard work put in for free in creating Audacity, and am thankful that I have this tool! Especially since I can't code myself. I understand that this is not easy to make, and I'm not demanding anything here. Just some thoughts on how it could be even better for my use case. :)

Make JAX Weird. A sticker you see around town. A call to action. Other places are weird. With their "Keep Austin Weird" merchandise. But they say we have work to do.

Now... "Zaat" was a catfish monster. Of sorts. A large decorated wheel detailed his revenge plans. It was a very organized movie monster. Scrapbooking for vengeance. The plan was mad science. And it worked.

"Blood Rage" had a kid gone bad. Unsupervised children became Drive-In Movie ax murderers back then. A useful plot device. Better than my 80s kid reality. When left alone I just ate Cookie Crisp cereal. Watched that Mr. T cartoon. Slasher movies need more. You sell the sizzle. "Blood Rage" tossed a piece of pumpkin pie and made "That is NOT cranberry sauce" a catchphrase.

The Zaat screenplay writer would later be on Ancient Aliens. Where a national audience heard talk of a Mysterious Orb. Would later write a sci-fi novel after dreaming the first chapter. His sci-fi dreams came true.

After a "Blood Rage" screening I sat across from the Producer's lawyer. We spoke of Yngwie Malmsteen. All sweep arpeggios and swagger. There was a "Blood Rage Girl" there. We spoke of St. Louis desserts. A Gooey Butter cake born of necessity. Or created by accident.

We Make JAX Weird with every breath we take. There are more burlesque shows in condemned buildings than yacht clubs. And we are blessed.
