The Department of Natural Resources is collaborating with public libraries across the state to provide free seven-day state park passes for checkout through June 2025. Our goal in offering this program is to provide a way for Minnesotans living in low-income communities across the state to visit state parks without the financial barrier of an entry fee.

On our way to Oregon, Brett and I started the day at Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park in Nevada. Under a shelter are 9 partial skeletons of the giant #Triassic #ichthyosaur Shonisaurus popularis. Did a nice casual ride from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk area, to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, and onto Wilder Ranch State Park with the Tri club in which we're members.
Wilder is worth a visit if you haven't been there. It's a few miles north of Santa Cruz on highway 1. The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is in north Santa Cruz near the Natural Bridges State Beach.
Natural Bridges is also home to the Monarch Butterfly Natural Preserve. From the park web site, "From late fall into winter, the Monarchs form a 'city in the trees.'"

A little-known program that aims to give low-income Minnesotans a chance to check out state parks for free is proving successful two years after it began, according to state Department of Natural Resources leaders. @feijoa I think of #skating parking garages as a sort of urban #skiing. Take a run down, then the ski lift (elevator) back up for another. Open year round and multiple options within a few blocks.
For the nature and scenery part, #stateparks (USA) can be nice: low traffic during the week, scenic roads with some fun hills and curves.
This photo is one of my favorite. The little blue heron was standing all elegant, as usual, when a student gust of wind hit it hard enough to ruffle its feathers, giving the bird a very surprised look for a minute or so.
