In the news last night and early this morning I kept hearing that Trump stormed out of court, but in the video, they showed of him leaving the courtroom, it looked more like he shuffled or waddled, not stormed.

If the video is meant to depict him 'storming', I think I'll have to readjust my expectations of what is meant by the news media's exaggerated statements.

Frequency of hailstorms increases by 40% around Sydney and Perth since 1979, research finds.

That's The Guardian headline. What does the paper say:

"statistically significant increases in annual hail-prone days on the southern parts of the east and west coasts, which cover several major Australian cities. Relative changes in cities in which increases were detected are up to ~10% per decade around Sydney, Perth and Canberra, and up to ~20% per decade around Hobart."

The Guardian article is here, and there's a link to the paper at the end. The paper is great, full of maps of hail trends in Australia. And for those interested, the detail of the method for how to estimate if hail has occurred when there is no one there to see it.

I just freaked myself out in the kitchen because I could hear whispering.

I couldn't work out what it was. I checked the google speakers, the TV, my devices and computer.. everything I could think of. It was definitely coming from inside the house, and definitely coming from the kitchen. I couldn't make out what it was saying.

I started worrying that it was auditory hallucinations, but even though I've been sleeping badly, I have been sleeping.. and in the past my hallucinations have been paired with extended periods of insomnia.

It literally got to the point where I was almost going to message my submissive to see if he'd pop around because I couldn't work out what it was and I was starting to really worry.

Then I figured it out.

It was the wind coming down the stove hood.

This weather is fucking haunted, man. 😐

Why is no one getting arrested for murdering people and destroying #Italy??????

"Seven people have died in the past 24 hours as two extreme weather events split Italy between #wildfires in the south and violent #storms in the north.

#Fires in #Sicily caused the temporary closure of #Palermo airport after temperatures in the city climbed to 47C on Monday."

"Ministers have been criticised for years over the failure to make adequate plans for the impacts of #GlobalHeating. The CCC said in March that the #UK was “strikingly unprepared” and that there had been a “lost decade” in action on #adaptation. It said #heatwaves, #droughts, #floods and #storms would intensify in the coming years until carbon #emissions reached net zero."

There’s no such thing as a disaster-resistant place anymore

#Climate risks are becoming increasingly expensive. Not just locally, but globally.

By Rachel DuRose, Jul 13, 2023

"'It’s getting harder and harder to adapt to these changing conditions,' Rachel Cleetus, policy director for the climate and energy program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, told the New York Times this week. 'It’s just everywhere, all the time.'

"The risk of natural disasters is everywhere (even in the most resilient places). People will no longer just have to prepare for intensified versions of the natural disasters they know, but they will also have to consider the possibility of new types of #disasters#floods, #storms, #HeatWaves, #droughts, and #fires — impacting their community."

#Florida’s #Environmental Failures Are a Warning for the Rest of the U.S.

By Jeff VanderMeer, July 12, 2023

"Dynamite and dredging were the tools chosen to drain the #Everglades and tame the waters. What once belonged to the #Tequesta #NativeAmericans, amid a wealth of #wildlife, became #ParkingLots and #Hotels owned by #WhitePeople. Today, many of those parking lots are submerged during #storms and, in some areas, the hotels overlook waters #toxic with #industrial and #construction #waste..."

Parts of the #Northland saw a seasonally #cold start for July 11. A number of #record lows were set, including a 37° in Brimson.

#Temperatures have remained cool during the daytime hours for the middle of #summer, with plenty of #sunshine. A light #haze is hanging around due to #wildfire #smoke from #Canada

Enjoy the dry #weather, as more #showers and #storms return by Wednesday.

I no longer think #hurricanes are the most terrifying of #storms; not even close.

Because we #humans have pumped so much #CO2 (and #Methane) into the #atmosphere, we'll be seeing more storms like this, in more places.

"This is not planet #Earth as we found it. This is a new place—a #fire planet we have made, with an atmosphere more conducive to #combustion than at any time in the past 3 million years."

"A Backdrop For Stories" #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #storms

A Backdrop For Stories
In 1993 a No Name Storm of the Century hit Dixie County, FL. I somehow slept through it all in Old Town Hammock but awoke to a 40° temperature drop and a shattered power grid. A bit later some returned to school. At first it was those from the inland Cross City and Old Town but in time came those from the hard hit coastal areas. It was only after they returned to school that we could be sure our friends were not dead. The rest of the school year was mostly a loss. Coursework provided a backdrop for stories about submerged firetrucks and a guy who dropped out of school after a house that was to be his graduation present slid into the Gulf of Mexico. We had a lot to say about interesting times.

Most summer afternoons when the east coast & west coast seabreezes collide, a line of intense thunderstorms are generated & march west towards the Gulf of Mexico. This was taken at a downtown marina as the dark, ominous clouds began to roll in. Loved the contrast of the glassy smooth waters ahead of the impending turbulence.

Put my hearing protection on, started my Mozart playlist and ground up all the tree limbs that came down in the last week to a nice pile of mulch to add to our sandy soil. I'll repeat that several times over the coming summer! #farming #storms #recycling

Forecasters are warning of more severe storms Tuesday in the same areas hit by #tornadoes on Friday. But while storm warnings are improving, it's still really hard to forecast exactly where a tornado will strike.

Atmospheric scientist Chris Nowotarski explains why the science is so hard.
