Shortly after midnight, they opened fire, killing two African-American students and wounding twelve others. No cops were ever arrested or indicted. This occurred eleven days after the massacre at Kent State.

Today in Labor History May 13, 1960: San Francisco Police violently attacked university students who were nonviolently protesting HUAC (House Un-American Committee) hearings. After protesters were denied entrance to the meeting, police attacked and swept them out of City Hall's rotunda and down the stairs with fire hoses. 12 people hospitalized (including eight police, mostly from exhaustion). 64 were arrested. Charges were dropped against all but one, who was acquitted in a jury trial. The hearings were led by the infamous Joe McCarthy. They would come into union towns like Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle, and issue subpoenas to all the progressives in the town, especially union leaders, many of whom were communists, or had communist ties. The only defense was to take the Fifth Amendment. The consequence of that was that you would usually lose your job, your name would be plastered in the papers, and your kids would be mistreated in school. Alternatively, you could take the First, like the Hollywood Ten did. For that, you’d be held in contempt of court sent to prison.

when I try to explain uni to people they're always like 'so.. you only go to uni 6 hours a week???', and I'm like 'well.. technically... i guess...?'
But it's like:
3 hours in class (x2 subjects)
15 hours reading (x2 subjects)
2 hours admin - checking emails, forums, etc (x2 subjects)
4 hours reviewing, catching up, editing notes taken in class (x2 subjects)
So, this is at least 48 hours a week, so far
... plus assessment prep and writing:
2 hours reviewing notes for in class quizzes (each week for 14 weeks)
24 hours research and writing for assessments (x 8 assessments)
24 hours researching and writing for outstanding work from previous semester (x9 assessments)
And this is at least 412 extra hours to squeeze into the semester somewhere...
Now, multiply everything by two or three because I'm dyslexic and dyscalculiac, then factor in that my weeks aren't actually 7 days long and my days aren't actually 24 hours long, because my disabilities steal time.
...AND THIS IS PART TIME

Congratulations to my #SheffieldUCU and #Sheffield #Student colleagues who mounted a successful day long picket which stopped the Higher Education Strategic Planning Association from holding their annual conference at our uni, knowing it was the same two days that academics would be out on #strike nationwide.
Clearly strategic planning is not actually HESPA's forte.

Today at #school, my 6th grade (11 yo) daughter was all a flutter with the news that an eight grader (13-14 yo) was #arrested. At first she thought it was a teacher. The other kids saw her kicking back at the #cops. Then the videos started passing around on the group chats, and someone realized it was a #student. 3 cop cars in the background as she tried to free herself from the school resource officer.

When kids are tapered off one psychotropic drug only to be replaced with another, there can be huge mood and behavior issues. #Schools aren't notified during this 2-6wk period, so #disciplinary issues are attributed to the kid being defiant. Continuing my expansion of my #bio and #introduction - I'm a #CriticalCriminology #student - police and prison #abolitionist.
I'm currently doing a bachelors and am hoping to go on to do #post-grad studies and work in #research and #teaching. I'd love to get involved in research and writing about #abolition.
Critical #criminology basically means that the focus is on the power structures that exist, how they can contribute to crime and what their responses to crime and justice are.
I believe that police and prisons need to be abolished completely. Interestingly, US criminologists in the 70s thought that crime rates were dropping so quickly that we'd be shutting down prisons over the next 20 years, and that by 2000-ish we wouldn't need prisons anymore - then the private prison industry showed how locking people in cages could make a LOT of money, and the prison populations skyrocketed.
Locking people in cages is inhumane. It doesn't work to deter crime, it doesn't solve crime. To quote Angela Davis - Prisons do not disappear social problems, they disappear human beings.
We need to focus on creating a world where we stop disappearing people and start fostering connection with each other.
