If your vehicle was made in the last few years, you’re probably driving around in a data-harvesting machine that may collect personal information as sensitive as your race, weight, and sexual activity. Volkswagen’s cars reportedly know if you’re fastening your seatbelt and how hard you hit the brakes.
That’s according to new findings from Mozilla’s *Privacy Not Included project. The #nonprofit found that every major car brand fails to adhere to the most basic privacy and security standards in new internet-connected models, and all 25 of the brands Mozilla examined flunked the organization’s test. #Mozilla found brands including #BMW, #Ford, #Toyota, #Tesla, and #Subaru collect #data about drivers including race, facial expressions, weight, health information, and where you drive. Some of the cars tested collected data you wouldn’t expect your car to know about, including details about sexual activity, race, and immigration status, according to Mozilla."

We recently bought a slightly used Subaru Outback. The salesperson described it as "Basically a large, rolling computer." Which goes a long way toward explaining why the owner's manual is thicker than the Bible. But hey, I learned how to turn off the feature that shuts off the engine when you're at a full stop. It sounds like a good idea until you actually have to drive one. And the steering wheel stops responding, and the air conditioning starts to fade and the whole car lurches when it restarts. But I love the car.

Our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek's CarPlay has been the most unreliable integration of CarPlay I've ever used. One leg of a trip it'll work perfectly fine. Then a couple hours later on our way back it'll refuse to connect to either of our phones. We've swapped cables, tried different phones; it's an 80% chance it'll work any time we turn the car on.
If we're lucky we can fully turn the car off, wait a minute, then turn everything back on and reconnect our phone and it's fine again. If we're unlucky it'll continue to refuse to connect.
My Mazda 3 has had this issue zero times, and any other car I've been in with CarPlay it's worked flawlessly.
And this issue has persisted even after the entire head unit has been replaced!
We're well out of warranty but our issues are all documented with Subaru over the almost five years we've owned the car. I'm not sure what to do at this point other than suffer it till eventually we decide to trade the car in for something else ☹️

In my #Subaru Impreza, I can never activate STARLINK and it won't connect, but there's no way to turn off the cell radio, so it pings towers wherever I go.
I _can_ turn off the Wi-Fi, but not the Bluetooth.
So I can't vote on the poll because there's no option for "they won't let me turn it off" 😡
Grateful for an older #Subaru 5 speed. The side roads are about 70% ice here in #Minnesota in the cities this morning. Low gears, ESC off, and occasional easy to use e-brake made it easy to drop off the kids this morning. #autos
I tell my kids how I drive, but I'm not certain how helpful it will be, I doubt that there will be manual transmission vehicles when they drive. #parenting
