We need to do a much better job of letting people know we care about them and of actually doing something about their distress. This is especially difficult with masculine gender roles.
It's perfectly clear to me, for example, that I have zero value in this society. Why? Because i haven't been able to find a real job in 22 years.
Platitudes will not refute that 22 years of abject rejection, where I'm not even getting interviews and I'm stuck driving for an abusive employer who won't even admit they're an employer.
Blaming mental health abjectly fails to address my very real world problems but when it comes to #suicide, despite the evidence of deaths of despair, all anyone ever talks about is mental illness, which obviously is a way of *not* talking about social injustice.

September is National suicide prevention month and many members of the Invisible Disability Community are at high risk but, they're not alone. Individuals in the LGBTQIA community are "four times more likely" to make such an attempt for much the same reason as disabled individuals. The way they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. It is also the second leading cause of death for young people in the US between the ages of 18 and 25. "Native American communities experience higher rates of suicide compared to all other racial and ethnic groups in the US being the eighth leading cause of death…".
I thought this would be a good time to migrate and repost a piece I did on TBI "traumatic brain injury" and suicide to include these other at risk groups. What can you do if someone in your life is at risk? Spend some time with them, don't be judgmental, listen and love. If you see them being victimized or bullied, stand up and say something.

Why support is so important for those that live with TBI and Brain Injury. Between 2014 to 2017, the traumatic brain injury-linked death rate rose from 16.3 to 17.5 per 100,000 people.
There were 61,131 TBI-linked deaths in 2017 alone, and nearly half of these deaths were by suicide or homicide from 2015 to 2017. Last summer, a rash of suicides on the USS Washington raised questions about lack of support and services said to contribute to these deaths.
The links below present the dismal statistics and some ways to help prevent suicide among the population living with Brain Injuries and other marginalized people.

I'm currently getting out of a heavy #depression and I'm feeling much better lately, but today I still feel, like I don't want to live anymore.
I can't say that my depression is coming back or that I'm super sad again or anything. I just logically see no reason for me to live anymore:
* I have no purpose in live: For 4 years now I tried to make Fridays For Future my purpose in life, but I failed miserably.
* I have nothing that makes me happy
* I have essentially no friends
* The people I like the most want nothing or next to nothing to do with me. No offense to those people that are friendly with me - you're cool, you're just not *that* to me.
* I live off my father's pocket and he won't be able to afford me very much longer. I'm all out of money and the state still doesn't pay me anything.
* I don't think it will ever get better.
I really want to end this.

Blunt and ruthless description of being newly paralysed and his reasons for ending his life, including disparaging opinions of other disabled people. Also includes an explicit account of the steps he took towards suicide. Therefore definitely not an emotionally-safe read for everyone, and I thought twice about whether to even list it here.
I'd say it's only recommended if (a) you've already read enough other disability politics to put it in context as one person's perspective, and (b) you have the ability to hear and empathise with a devastating loss, without necessarily buying into the conclusions.
But if that applies to you, it could be a rewarding read. I've not come across another book covering quite the same territory.
By relying on the #knowledge that's long been known, rather than the "just because we can" arrogance of #capitalism, we can stop the long, slow, and now imminent #suicide of our #species.

But as someone who was a witness to suicidal thoughts, I will say this:
DON'T try to "argue" someone out of suicidal thoughts, or worse, claim that such thoughts are "irrational".
Instead, try for empathy. Listen to them - _without_ judgment, and without dismissing their feelings. Emphasize that you are there for them, no matter that. _This_ is what they need, not a discussion!

Then they stopped posting almost 24 hours ago.
I’ve lost friends and acquaintances by their own hands. This is no joke, and not knowing is awful.
(I don’t know their real identity or location, so I’m helpless to even check on them.)

I regularly think of this #statistic that, contrary to expectations, #suicide rates fell in the UK during the first #lockdown by 18% (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/ons-samaritans-wales-england-ons-data-b953391.html). The fall was almost entirely in the male suicide rate, perhaps linked to men spending less time at work, and more time with their families.

Situation with #socialmedia #addiction with #kids is dire. And Laura Marguez-Garrett argues Snap simply lies on it’s testimonies about what they present as an experience to young people, girls especially.
TikTok algorithms turn to advocate suicide after breakups, leading to actual suicides. Snap’s algorithm connecting kids to dealers.
And the companies? It could still be cheaper for them to keep doing it and handle the cases one-by-one.
PES (college in Bangalore) student was caught with a phone in the examination hall. He is later reported to have committed suicide by jumping off the building.
The mom sat in college for two hours after he died inquiring about her son while they apparently lied to her that he was roaming around with his friends while they cleaned up the evidence.
This is very fishy and needs some media attention.
This looks really interesting and important. I haven’t read the work yet, and advanced analytics is outside my comfort zone.
Some initial thoughts:
1. If we have evidence of a causal relationship between unemployment and suicide, how can economists and politicians justify calling 4-5% unemployment “full” employment, and how many lives is it ethical to sacrifice in the name of attempting to control inflation?
2. While unemployment is the current (socially constructed) category and measurable thing here, what is it about unemployment that drives suicide? This is important for interventions and systemic change. Is it the financial aspects (like financial hardship, debt)? The sense of abjection? The social stigmas? The sense of purposelessness and exclusion? In short, can we test whether the (ironically) capitalist assumption that “more jobs” is the answer?

Along the lines of that oldie... if a tree falls in the forest but there's nobody there, did it really make a sound?
If someone #transitioned #MtF ~17 years ago, socially legally medically & surgically, but was/is so distraught & self-loathing at their nonetheless manifest non-Passability that after a few years of trying to grin & bear it they just gave up & began fully hiding away from the world [still true to this day, & if anything even more intense than all those years ago], did they really transition?
The legal medical & surgical aspects remain undeniable & verifiable. Otoh, the complete physical withdrawal from ALL society, for 13+ years, would seem to countervail one's social transition. Put another way, the self-imposed disappearance indicates a social detransition, even de-existence. Was there, then, any point at all in all the associated hardships? Why did one bother at all?
Tis a helluva Catch-22; one reached the point where not transitioning seemed tantamount to accepting inevitable suicide, yet transitioning unfortunately still has the loathed & reviled "him" crying back from the mirror, not the contented "her" liberation which was the whole point. Sure, all the despised "bits" are long gone, supplanted by far happier replacements... but that face, sigh, sob, ugh, that face, crying from the mirror, remains his, not hers, despite $40K of #FFS. Failure. Simple failure.
Furthermore, what does one's abject despair & chronic depression at one's non-Passability imply, or prolly even state outright, about one's internalised #transphobia? Not for me is the contemporary [at least, it didn't exist / wasn't a thing, back before, during & soon after my own transition] #transfem identification phenomenon. Back then, but tbh also still today, the concept of wanting to explore & live one's femininity, yet still wanting "junk retention", was/is anathema to me [& all my fellow-travellers back then]. So now, superimposed on my apparent internalised #transphobia, it seems i somehow fall into the Rowling et al camp, a realisation that only deepens & widens my self-loathing & depression.
Back in the day, at least in Straya, there wasn't an overt high-octane red-meat #RWNJ politicised anti-#trans presence in society. Hence, all the family & friendship losses that ensued were presumably informed mostly by respective peeps' individual innate personal opinions & biases. Nowadays however ofc, Straya to some extent, other countries to major extents, have been infected by the #RWNJ coordinated cult of hate against all trans peeps, apparently irrespective of transitioned status. In such a contemporary climate of public hate & political malfeasance, it seems almost like my long pre-existing "vanishment" might have been, more or less, life-preserving.
Yet, why bother? What kind of "life" is this? What is its point, at all? Is this life, or mere existence? Does it serve any purpose, or is it simply oxygen theft?
Compounding one's chronic self-directed rejection, with associated major depression, is the shocking plight of the planet wrt our shoot-in-foot #ClimateCrisis. All taken together, Albert Camus' Sisyphus treatise on #suicide rings constantly in one's ears.

More on the story of that retracted paper on “predicting” suicidal ideation that @kordinglab and I identified serious errors in.
It turns out that the review process actually worked as it was supposed to. The paper was originally rejected, with two reviewers raising similar concerns as the post-publication public critiques (including ours) raised. Yet, despite the critical concerns and initial rejection, somehow Nature Human Behavior accepted the article anyway, without checking back with the original reviewers to see if the concerns (which ended up leading to the later retraction) were addressed.
This sort of editorial behavior only serves to accelerate the loss of faith in the scientific publishing.

Support from #parents and #caregivers plays a crucial role in the #wellbeing and development of #transgender, #nonbinary, and other #genderdiverse #children. Studies consistently show that #rejecting or exhibiting #hostility towards these children significantly increases their risk of #anxiety, #depression, #substanceabuse, and even #homelessness. Tragically, they also face a higher risk of #suicide due to rejection, #bullying, and #victimization.
