Finished listening to Barbarian Days by William Finnegan. I savored it over my evening meals so I didn't have to focus on eating every meal alone.
I thought it was wonderful, as good an audiobook as I've listened to. In part that's because it was read by the author. In part because it describes the surfing life from inside it in such a way non-surfers and surfers both hang on every word.

Caught the following new episode of American Masters regarding the life of Duke Kahanamoku (a 5x Olympic swimming medalist in 1912, 1920 & 1924); who is noted for saving the lives of 8 people from drowning in the ocean off of Newport Beach in 1925; who is considered the "father" of modern surfing & who called for surfing to become an Olympic sport about 100 years before it actually did; and who later in life became the "Ambasssor of Aloha" to promote business & tourisim in Hawaii which he had been doing informally before he was a awarded that title. He also played a role in various early movies because of his good looks, athleticism & populrity.

through a green hill-valley-landscape we pedaled on, to the nice coast of #ericeira. wonderful this darkblue ocean, the yellow beaches and the rugged cliffs! here it is known for #surfing. accordingly there are a lot of surf schools and surf hostels here. after a long time only camping we took a room in a hostel. oh that was great on one hand, but kinda weird on the other hand sleeping in a bed and having 4 solid walls around us 😅

#Today I was #surfing for 1st time in over a week. Waves were small but fun. I rode the nose with confidence, full-on hang ten, and even got a cheer from a woman who said my surfing was good. And I felt good. Saw a drone flying around and I started thinking about getting caught on film. A wave came. I whipped around, caught it and was locked in, ready for my moment.

I had a fantastic time in Munich with my team recently. We explored the city and enjoyed its sights and sounds. But the most surprising and thrilling thing I saw was in the city park.

In January I retired after a 42-year career as a #newspaper reporter — the last 33 at the Gainesville Sun in Florida. I’m a University of Florida grad — go #Gators — and was born and raised in Miami. Hobbies include #surfing and #cycling. I volunteer for the local humane society. I joined to keep up with the profession, the news and news makers.
I prefer my photography to be free range: I operate without a studio, without lights or reflectors, and without props. Sports photography is a passion of mine.
