Wow, recovering from a #major #surgery give me some major messed up dreams. Dreamed society had essentially become this huge brainwashed people that were taken care of cruise ship style, and any independent thought was brutally stopped by public execution within moments of the infraction. I was supposed to be a diplomat from another country but ended up just watching all this in horror as it played out. Not a future I would wish on this world.
I don't get it.
Here in Australia, in one of Sydney's biggest hospitals (Royal Prince Alfred aka RPA) masks are mandatory at all times — for everybody. And they WILL kick you out if you don't follow the rules.
Yet I'm reading that many health services worldwide are only now "considering" maybe perhaps one day reintroducing masks.
What the flaming fark? Just bloody do it! Masking saves getting a nasty dose of a number of airborne diseases, and hospitals & doctors' rooms are know for their diseases — it's why they exist for crying out loud!
We mask in shops etc too, but I get it, perhaps they're not as bad as a health setting. Perhaps. You do you there. But a hospital? There should be no question.
If not for you, for the other patients.

Had my first day of normal functioning today since the #surgery. A little tired, somewhat sore, bathroom trips are a major drag, but otherwise I got up at the usual time, worked, parented, cooked, did bedtime, even did some long-overdue tidying once the munchkin was asleep. My codeine dose is way down and most of the time I'm just using paracetamol and nsaids. I'm so excited to be back to myself!

These early days of recovering from #openheart #surgery are challenging. I feel like a faberge egg that’s been carefully glued together and I have to be mindful of every breath, every movement. I have to cough to get out junk in my lungs but I have to have this #heart pillow that I squeeze as hard as I can while coughing. It’s a carefully orchestrated series of actions and it’s taking all of my headspace for now. By the end of the month I’m sure I’ll be back to talking about games , narrative design, and other fun topics.
My sweet dog. Such an amazingly motivated guide: less than 2 weeks after lung surgery, he's still more than excited to put on his harness, regardless of the fact he has a 4 cm incision on his left side, directly under the girth strap! It's wierd being a #surgery patient for such a long stretch of time and experiencing the things about which I see the least as a #medical #SocialWorker. I've never interacted much in terms of routine back and forth with a patient portal as an actual *patient* — my only experiences have been around refills and the occasional "does this look wierd?" question to my PCP. But wow does a good portal UI/UX make for a drastically more seamless experience as a patient and way better early detection/prevention. It makes me think, since I know so many surgeons who hate portal messages, that in the age where portals are a primary form of communication insurance companies desperately need to start reimbursing for this. There isn't a possible future where asynchronous communication doesn't become even more central to care.

Medical #gender transitioning for #minors isn't a thing. #Children are not receiving gender modification #surgery. #GenderAffirmingCare for minors is limited to #therapy, and #hormone #treatment for some individuals. Again, if the #facts were on the right's side, why would they have to #lie?

I had #ffs on Tuesday and things are going great so far. I had really psyched myself out to an almost paralyzing level, but it turns out that while recovery sucks, it passes really quickly. I've got a lot of bruising on my neck due to the jaw work which will hopefully fade over the next week, and I have to wear the full head wrap until Tuesday when the stitches and staples come out at the recheck. I'm thinkin abt meal prep for the weeks post-surgery when I won't be able to lift my arms up past my chest.
One idea: bulk buying chicken, adding whatever marinade/seasonings I'll want on each portion (maybe fresh or sauteed onions and/or garlic too?) and freezing them raw in bags to thaw later and cook in the oven, getting help from my roommates if needed.
