Looming environmental and social breaking points, like climate change and massive inequalities, are becoming increasingly apparent and large in scale. In this book, Gaya Herrington puts today’s key societal challenges in perspective. Her analysis, rooted in her research on a 50-year-old model of the world that forecasted the onset of global collapse right around the present time, brings some structure to what otherwise might feel like the overwhelming task of achieving genuine societal sustainability.

In Sound Mind is a first-person psychological survival horror game, and that's a three out of three for a express train to nopeville.
I tried to give it a fair shake. The atmospheric design is pretty much exactly what you'd want in a horror game, as is the audio.
The environmental design is considerably more frustrating, with the things you can use being highlighted with an icon, and everything else just being... there.
You play as a psychologist who appears to be going quite mad, having woken up in the basement of a building in a completely flooded town.
You need to solve some puzzles, as the atmosphere got increasingly tense, I was less and less inclined to keep going.
For complex reasons, I get no enjoyment out of horror games, and this game has not changed that.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a Sci-fi survival horror FPS, and two out of four of those categories are games I don't like to play.
I wasn't sure what 2022 Allie thought she was doing with buying this, so I looked it up. It turns out it was part of a bundle, and for some reason I decided to install it?
That was my first mistake. The second was playing it. Technically, I only played it for twelve minutes, because the first five minutes of the game is basically a movie setting up the game as a follow-on from Aliens.
I probably don't need to explain further. Be a marine. Enter the Sulaco. Dark environment, Kill or be killed. Get killed.
There's absolutely nothing in this game that makes me want to even attempt to keep playing. Not my thing.

Tin Can is game number seven in this month's Humble Choice bundle, and answers the question, "What if Breathedge, but serious?"
Tin Can is a first-person space survival sim. Your goal is to survive as long as possible in real time.
The tutorial walks you (an on-board janitor) through the basic systems of the escape pod through a set of cute over-the-radio interactions with an on-board engineer who has to be in two places at once, and seconds you a few times to run through some repairs, then diagnostics, then troubleshooting.
Then the ship starts to explode, and suddenly you need to be in that escape pod.
You have a handful of spare parts, a technical manual, and a few minutes to solve whatever problem the escape pod is experiencing before that problem kills you.
The game tells you upfront that you will die. A lot.
I wouldn't describe it as fun, per se; it's stressful, but very engaging.
With only one game left in this month's bundle, I'm genuinely surprised at the number of bangers this time around.
If you don't already own the games I reckon you can't go wrong dropping AUD$17 on the bundle, even if the final game turns out to be a fizzer.

The Eternal Cylinder is a weird game. It's a weird open-world-ish adventure-slash-survival-slash-puzzle game where you play as a little creature called a Trebhum, and you can consume stuff around you in the environment in order to evolve.
Which you need to do, to try and stay ahead of the giant unavoidable titular "Eternal Cylinder", which literally crushes everything in it's path.
Including you, if you can't get ahead of it, and to one of the towers dotted around the landscape that stop the cylinder. Temporarily.
The alien landscape reminds me of the planets in No Man's Sky, but the weirdest thing on the planet's surface might be the Trebhum. These little spehroidal* creatures start out with two eyes and a snout, which which they consume (left mouse button) and expel (right mouse button) things they find around the environment.
Some of these things help the little Trebhum evolve new abilities. Like suddenly growing legs with which to jump and run away from the giant, world-crushing cylinder.
Fortunately the game autosaves a lot because, y'all gonna need it.
All the while, the game is narrated by a friendly & gentle Englishman (who's actually a New Zealand actor, Peter Hadyen), guiding you through the things you need to do to survive.
The only reason I stopped playing was because I had my late work shift and a co-worker waiting on me to make the actual phone calls due to my lack of actual voice, otherwise I would have continued playing.

"Steam Distillation of Essential Oils on the Stove
While there are plenty of places online to find complicated instructions for creating a homemade essential oil still using a pressure canner and copper tubing, you can accomplish basic steam distillation with just a steamer basket, mason jar and a pot with a glass or metal lid.
Add about an inch of water to the bottom of a deep pot and place a steamer basket over the water. Place a mason jar inside the pot on top of the steamer basket. A wide mouth pint tends to work well. Chop your herb material and place it on top of the steamer basket, all around the mason jar. Put a lid on the pot upside down. Inside the top of the lid, add some ice or cold water if available (optional).
Turn on the pot and simmer the water. The steam will come up through the herb material and collect inside the lid. It’ll then re-condense on the lid and flow down to the middle of the inverted pot lid, where it will drip down into the mason jar.
Cook at a low simmer until almost all the water has boiled off and re-condensed into the mason jar. Place the mason jar into the refrigerator overnight. When the water is cold, you’ll notice a small layer of oil on top of the water. This is your steam distilled essential oil.
Carefully scoop the essential oil off the water into a tall and narrow container. Place it back into the refrigerator to re-settle. The oil will again come to the top, and a small amount of water will settle below. Use an eye dropper to carefully extract the oil off the remaining water.
Leave a little bit of the oil on top of the water, and this remaining oil/water is now a hydrosol, or mix of water and essential oil. Hydrosols can be used diluted further and used as cleansers or perfumes, or preserved by adding a small amount of alcohol.
The oil you extracted off your hydrosol is your finished essential oil. Leave the container open on the counter for 24 hours to allow it to off gas a bit, which will remove any harsh off smell that developed in the extraction process. Afterwards, cap tightly and use as you would any essential oil, depending on what plant type it is."

To all the collective comrades in #Texas that need a way to escape the heat when fascist corporate states like yours raise the price of electric to kill you and your elderly relatives, I have a partial solution that gives you more control.
Unfortunate gotchas:
- You will need access to a window that opens and closes for a window A/C unit in ONE bedroom.
- Cannot live in an apartment
- You will need some land available that has access to the sun during most hours of the day for solar panels.
- This is mainly only for peak hours when the day is at it's hottest. This isn't a 24 hour solution but it should be good enough to stay cool while the sun is out and the day is super hot.
- It would be in your best interest to hide this, if you can (Your life is more important though, remember that!). There's recently been insurance companies dropping policies of individuals who have solar panels outside of their homes (Most notably lately in Florida).
I know this is expensive and some of y'all might need to come together with roommates or relatives to pay for this, but it WILL keep you cool for several hours and it WILL allow you to have more control than relying on the Texas grid. It is worth the long term investment as these specific batteries are made to last at least 10 years and around 15,000 charge cycles (Yes, you can safely bring these batteries down to 2% and this happens to be the safest batteries for the environment at the moment)

Step Two: Buy 2, 100Ah, 12.8V LifePO4 batteries. Connect them in parallel. Step Five: You will need 10 gauge wires to run to your solar panels from your solar charge controller in step one.
5b: You will need 2 gauge wires to connect the batteries in parallel.
5c: You'll also need a Y branch connector to connect the solar panels in parallel.
5d: Look into buying 50amp breakers
Step Six: Buy a Window A/C unit that is either 5,000BTUs or 6,000BTUs. You're specifically looking for something around 400-500 watts. More is okay, but I wouldn't recommend anything above 600 watts as your batteries will have drained fairly quickly without time to recharge. Step Seven: Watch YOUTUBE VIDEOS! Ask questions! There is so many YouTube videos out there that show you how to do this in detail. HoboTech is good at explaining these things in detail, however not the best for setup videos.
I recommend avoiding units like Jackery ($3,299) as well as Bluetti ($1,600 JUST for the UNIT not including panels or the A/C!)
Overall cost average for ALL 1-6 steps above: $1,600-$1,700
Average Hours of A/C runtime with full sunlight - 6 hours, more if you are able to use Eco Modes.
Just remember once the batteries drain they need charged again! If you use more power than you're getting from the sun the batteries will not charge.

Unfortunate Spacemen feels like a first-person mash-up of Among Us, Dead By Daylight, and Alien. It's a free multiplayer survival game that's suffered the same fate as most of the other free & paid multiplayer games that sat in my Pile of Shame for too long: no-one is playing.
The game starts with a slightly over-the-top tutorial playing as one of the titular Spacemen. It's frustratingly slow as the voiceover drones on endlessly, switching out halfway through in what was (I guess) supposed to feel funny, but just felt odd & forced. There's nothing here you don't already know from every other FPS.
Next, the "playing as the monster" tutorial. You start out disguised as one of the spacemen; you can then switch into monster form to kill a spaceman, then back to spaceman again, or even take on the identity of whoever you killed.
The gameplay feels a bit janky in the way it plays, but the biggest problem is the same one experienced by most F2P PvP games: get big quick, or go home.
The servers are still running (unlike many other games), but there aren't a lot of players, & apparently most are just griefing.
Which makes Unfortunate Spacemen a:

Phoning Home is a third-person open-world robot survival sim. It is also free on Steam (which is why there's a link at the end).
Phoning Home was developed by ION LANDS, who went on to create Cloudpunk, (one of my all-time favourite games).
I've mentioned before that I'm not a big fan of sandbox survival games. Valheim left me cold, and V Rising genuinely left me regretting spending the money on it.
Phoning Home, on the other hand, is a narrative driven survival game, which takes the exploration and construction and gives it purpose.
I only intended to play this for 15 minutes before work, and was an hour late starting work, so deep did it suck me in and make me want to keep playing, and further the story of the cute little WALL-E inspired robot, ION.
To the point that the new Warframe expansion The Duviri Paradox dropped today (it's free too!), and if I'm to have any hope of giving it a fair go, I'll need to play that first, because otherwise I suspect I'll be up all night playing Phoning Home.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted is a first person stealth survival game.
If you've been reading up on my reviews, you might assume how this is going to go, and you'd be correct.
Up front, though, let me say how utterly refreshing it is to have a game where the gameplay voiceover heavily features a gendered honorific, & allows you to change that from "Sir" to "Madam" with a button at the main menu.
Unfortunately, any potential gender euphoria from this change is overwhelmed by playing a stealth survival game.
For the newcomers: I'm not a big fan of survival games, and even less so of stealth games where you're primarily helpless; this is both. Not great for a woman with anxiety issues.
If that's your cup of tea, have at it; a game set in a quaint & creepy English countryside, where you're being hunted by robots was always going to be a big ask, & it was a "please be over, please be over" every time I died and checked the clock.
There's a whole layer of real-world subtext for me about being hunted by English people who want me to not exist that really drives the final nail into this game's coffin.

Subterrain is a top-down sci-fi horror survival game.
Apparently.
You play an imprisoned scientist who has to break out of his cell, and finds that the entire prison, and apparently, base on Mars has been overrun by zombies, maybe. Based on some flavour text, on something I picked up.
It's moody & atmospheric, and I spent 73 minutes exploring all of the nooks and crannies of the prison, waiting for something to happen.
There's next to zero guidance, and you need to discover your way forward, which is why I explored every nook and cranny; all the while collecting things until I hit my carry limit. There's a recycle-and-build system in there somewhere, but by the time I got close to it, I'd had enough.
The game itself is well designed, and the sound design kept me thinking that something was just about to happen... but no. I killed two zombies in the first two levels.
There's a hint of something interesting in there, but it's buried under so much drudgery, that for a moment I questioned why I'm doing these reviews at all.
Ultimately Subterrain felt like style without substance, and I'm genuinely disappointed; it feels like I wasted 73 minutes of my life that I didn't enjoy, and won't get back. It's just:

It's got a few little scorched flakes in each jar, which sucks visually, but I'm skeptical those really matter much in practice. Taste seems fine, but I've never had Meyer's lemon marmalade before, so it's hard to tell what's actually normal. There's a tiny bit of bitter/tartness to it, but it's: lemons. So ya.
