So my dad keeps being effectively locked out of his #mac because the #system portion of the disk space keeps taking up all his available hard drive.
It's incredibly frustrating to fix, because in order to remote into the computer to help him, he needs to be able to upgrade his OS. To upgrade his OS, he needs to free up disk space. He deletes everything he can but as a non-technical person I can't have him run like ncdu to see where all the disk space is going.
Are there tools one can buy to solve this problem for non-technical people? Or like a guide they can follow? The Apple disk space menu didn't help cause he did all those and it still wasn't enough. Thanks!

Today i did that thing where you write a letter to your former/or future self, and i did one to my younger self, it was like 5 pages and reading it back i started tearing up. The way I did it, because of both my transness and Plurality, was like writing to a dead sibling, in this case my sister. Talked about how people call me by her name, how i'm sorry I couldn't save her, how i wish we both made it to 18 together, asking for permission if its okay for me to change her body and if its okay to get married, all that jazz.
It was... something, i don't know if cathartic maybe, but it wasen't a bad feeling. i think it helped alittlebit to slowly start letting go of her and the person I technically used to be. Because its not me, she's been dead for a very long time.
I honestly highly suggest to anyone, wether its transness, truama, plurality, to write a letter to them, that younger person who you couldn't take with you as you grew up for whatever reason it may be.
It might help, might not, but its better late then never right?
We can't change the past, but we can change how we hold it on ourselves.

Der #Opa meiner Frau geht sein #Leben lang arbeiten um dann ~2000 € #Rente zu haben.
Diese 2000 € gingen nun komplett für die #Versorgung durch die #Sozialstation drauf wenn nicht die Schwiegermutter noch 3* am Tag bei Ihm vorbei schauen würde um Frühstück- Mittag- und Abendessen zu machen und Ihn aufs WC zu bringen.

You can build up #anarchist solidarity networks of #mutalaid, you can #disobey the state, and still use the tools of the #system, against which you are fighting, to prevent something even whose. Why shouldn't we?

Unfortunately, money is only an abstract side issue in the end. The #system dynamics will change under pressure, and some of the failures will be in critical parts that no amount of check writing will solve, especially if social order is also compromised. Diverted resources mean less availability elsewhere, etc.
The #technical is #social before it is technical.
The #purpose of a #system is what it does.
A system is defined not by rules, but how they are #enforced.

People with means creating legal loopholes to wall off #resources from everyone else so they can extract its value w/o rectifying the imbalances they create is as old as cities & armies.
As far as #tech goes, without agency, the people behind the specific uses are the only ones to blame. There's always a small percent of bandwagoners riding the coat-tails of a handful of more visionary types at the leading edge, and are able to easily take advantage of the unknowing public & #media.
It's still very early for the latest buzz, whether we're calling it #LLM, #AI, #GenerativeAI, or just #chatbot. VCs don't care (nor can they know) which of their longshots pays off, the #ethics behind a product, etc.
Given the state of the #system today, it's hard to see positive, profitable uses for this tech. Be assured that won't stop #VentureCapital investors from backing endless negative impact iterations, as soon as they're pitched.
It's still pre-2016 in #blockchain years for the {AI+VC} gambit.
A really good look at #AI, the unavoidable #bias of AI #systems, and how no such #system should ever be relied upon without sound #human supervision and judgment.
Indirectly, it highlights how AI can't be trusted to properly analyze #data, so how can anyone realistically expect any such tool to create true artistry of any kind, at any level?

Here's worse news: even if you did receive pay raises in line with #inflation, you're still quiet-quitting your democratic portion of the surplus from your contribution to collective value creation.
Besides the obvious raise in income, this surrendering of rights (by signing corp lawyer's employment contract) also gives them the market power to raise their income by raising prices. Since their extra income comes from your purchases in macro, it has the same wealth-transfer effect. This is buried in the disinformation that surrounds the word "inflation".
The problem is #system -wide, at the level of legal organization & finance. These last battles in the #digital #revolution will be the hardest!

It's so common it's as if there were an underlying ideology behind it, driving such behavior and being supported by laws & norms.

It's not hard to miss this when it's your first rodeo paying attention (aka younger quartiles). However, having been in several successive iterations of this cycle and heard the same specific, narrow complaint focus aimed at other #evolution-driven innovation that came & went, you can imagine that watching people bump around the perimeter of the problem again, while ignoring the causal upstream sources in the #system is a growing frustration.
The #media plays the same role, whether it's describing the Wall St narrative excuse for the latest boom & bust, or telling us what the latest economic, #political, or cultural #fear de jour we should be consumed by.
The same natural laws that make #disinformation impossible to contain & counter with corrections also work to ensure that any scheme for "redistribution" of #surplus in an organization will meet the same fate.
All complex adaptive systems will go through a phase change & irreversible structural #reorg when internal imbalances exceed the requirements for a pareto-optimal type harmony.

China Gears Up for Cognitive Warfare
China’s military is increasingly at work on wearable technology and a dedicated #psychological #support #system to win at what it views as the crucial space of #cognitive #warfare—manipulating enemy troops’ state of mind to shape their behavior and hardening its own forces against such efforts.
“In future cognitive domain operations, the influence of rational factors such as science and logic on individual cognition is likely to be weakened, and cognitive confrontation may become a #contest of #emotions,” says one recent article in PLA Daily.
Cognitive domain operations seek to capture the mind of one’s foes, changing the thoughts and perceptions of an adversary to shape their decisions and actions. As another People’s Liberation Army outlet describes, a cognitive attack aims to “use an “invisible hand” to control the opponent’s will, making the opponent feel “I can’t” and “I dare not,” and then achieve the effect of “I don't want to.”

Theda Skocpol, a professor of political science and sociology at Harvard, contended that many of the developments in states controlled by Republicans are a result of careful, long-term #planning by conservative strategists, particularly those in the #Federalist #Society, who are developing tools to build what she called “#minority #authoritarianism” within the context of a nominally democratic system of government.
Skocpol outlined her thinking in an email:
The first-movers who figured out how to configure this new “laboratory of democratic constriction” were legal eagles in the Federalist Society and beyond, because the key structural dynamic in the current G.O.P. gallop toward minority authoritarianism is the mutual interlock between post-2010 Republican control, often supermajority control, of dozens of #state #legislatures and the #SCOTUS #decision in 2019 to allow even the most #extreme and bizarre forms of partisan #gerrymandering.
These organized, richly resourced actors, she wrote,
"have figured out how to #rig the current U.S. #system of #federalism and #divided #branches, given generational and geographic realities on the ground, and the in many ways fluky 2016 presidential election gave them what they needed to put the interlock in place. They are stoking and using the fears and resentments of about half or so of the G.O.P. popular base to #undo #American #democracy and #enhance their own #power and #privileges. They are doing it because they can, and they believe in what they are doing. They are America’s G.O.P. Leninists.
Skocpol did not pull her punches:
This situation, locked in place by a #corruptly #installed #Supreme #Court #majority and by many #rotten-borough #judicial #districts like the one in #Amarillo, means that minority #authoritarians, behind a bare facade of “#constitutionalism,” can render majority-elected officials, including the president and many governors, officials in name only. The great thing from the minority authoritarian point of view is that those visible chief executives (and urban mayors and district attorneys) can still be blamed for government nonfunction and societal problems, but they cannot address them with even broadly supported measures (such as simple background checks for having military assault weapons).
In that arena, we'll need sizeable positive uses of the latest tech as alternatives, or the early adopters (who are not typical slices of society) will acquire too much leverage & #power.
The good news is that as a #system that's in a far-from-equilibrium state, a phase change can be initiated from small changes in conditions. (See Margaret Meade's famous quote.)
The post-WWII era near unanimous consensus narrative of corporate employers (latest iteration of the Benevolent Dictator fallacy) being critical to a free democratic society has declined in every generation since (~20 yrs). This model now fights for a 1/4 of the support it once had.
The #network narrative is coming up from the opposite direction, already with a majority. What has yet to happen is the passing of the 'investment' phase as the driving force, which is always followed by more public & wider #QualityOfLife motives.
This is a layered effect, built up incrementally with each specific new use case or advancement. #Language skills combined with search & internet servers loaded with shared data- these '#AI #ChatBots' -is just the latest layer in the long march of human social #evolution.
