Why do I keep coming back to game design?

I would love to be able to work part time with game design. So far, I’ve made some money (in total I’ve made about $20k), but that has never been my goal.

I love to create games from ideas. I typically move fast from my initial spark of an idea to a prototype. The first prototype rarely deliver even close to what my spark meant. Sometimes I find something new and follow the flow. Sometimes I rework the prototype to closer follow my spark.

I typically play my game a few times by myself before I put it in front of one of my design friends.

After the first “play through” I typically know if I want to move on with the idea or not. “Play through” is in quotes because we rarely play the game to the end.

Now the journey begins! I love iterating on the prototypes! I sometime swap whole systems out early on. Remove mechanisms and add them. In between the early prototype versions the game can change dramatically.

As the game progresses the changes become smaller and smaller. It quite often happens that I realise that I’ve stopped making big changes too early and go back to the big changes again.

This moves back and forth and back and forth until either I feel like the game is pitch worthy or that I lose interest in the game.

I love it!

Hi! I made a new game!

This is called Souvenirs, it's a paper role-playing game for one player, about going on a week-long vacation and writing a journal of the places you visit, and most importantly the items you get as souvenirs during your trips.

It was made during the #TinyKeepsakeJam on itch.io and it's kind of a big deal for me, as it is both my first journaling game and a first experimentation for a big project that i've been dreaming about for a few years. This is definitely a complete experience, but i've also used it to test the waters and i have lots of new ideas for that bigger project, i hope i can bring it to life someday!
