I Am Not A Monster: First Contact is billed as a "retro sci-fi tactical turn-based strategy" game.

By retro sci-fi, they mean early-mid 20th century pulp sci-fi.

If you like that kind of sci-fi, this might be right up your alley. Unfortunately, it's not really my cup of tea, and I couldn't really get past that to lock into the game.

Graphically, it's a weird combination of pulp sci-fi stationary graphics for menus, full-screen pixel-art animated transitions, and high-res gameplay, and it feels kind of jarring switching between them. It just feels a little incoherent.

There was almost something there with the gameplay, but when the game was making me feel like I wished I was playing a completely different tactics strategy game, that pretty much sealed the deal.

We Are The Dwarves is, apparently, a real-time tactics strategy game, about space-faring dwarves.

The game provides an intro, which is... confusing. It seems that this particular universe is made of stone instead of dark matter.

Our trio of stonefaring dwarves get into an accident, and then you have to... I don't know, and I don't really care to be honest.

Firstly, this is another game that uses a version of Unreal Engine 4 that uses a known buggy implementation of OpenSSL; the bug is only triggered on >10th Gen Intel CPUs. There's a workaround for it, but without the workaround, it will crash right after starting. It's the third game I've encountered with this bug since upgrading my PC, but it's a bad start to a game experience.

The game gives you a Steam achievement called "We all hate tutorials", and I don't, particularly when your odd game is so frustrating to try and play. I'm not even going to get into the voice acting.

I finally worked out where I was going wrong after wandering around a level over and over for ten minutes, but that pretty much meant that I'm just not interested in fighting with the game further.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf is a deck-building turn-based tactics strategy game set in the 40K universe.

It showed up in a Humble Bundle offer, with all but one DLC included, at the lowest tier - AUD$1.56.

The catch is that the game is being delisted from Steam on October 12th.

For $1.56? Yeah, why not.

There are only 2 DLC missing; one is free, and I got the other for $1.02 with Steam's "Complete your bundle" option, so for a grand total of $2.58 I got an OK-ish turn-based tactics game.

Having played it, I actually feel like I got a bargain (I'll add a link to the Humble Bundle page below.)

What's black and white and red all over? Tankies on social media. Also, Othercide.

Othercide is a roguelike tactics strategy game with an extremely limited palette. The entire game is in black and white, with shades of red.

The game initially starts out in a instructional level set in a gothic-almost-Victorian-London-by-way-of-Lovecraft 1897 where you play as "Mother", the "protector of the veil" -a warrior with Barbie feet (more on that later)- in a tactics battle with a number of supernatural monsters.

Towards the end of the battle, Mother sacrifices herself, for reasons that are not entirely clear, other than to set up the rest of the game, but she appears to be trying to stop some greater supernatural evil, called "the other" and represented by "the child"; as the child is obviously not Grogu, I have the assumption that it may, in fact, be her child? In any case, kiddo is a bad seed, and he wants to destroy... everything. Destroying the city in the first battle wasn't quite enough.

Then Mother is... kind of... resurrected. Not exactly alive, but... alive-ish? She reforms among innumerable dead bodies piled everywhere, like a naked red Barbie with just as much physical definition, but alarmingly lifelike bare buttocks, and inexplicably, "Barbie" feet that are positioned as if our shoeless Mother is wearing high heels. It's definitely a choice.

From here, you find out that through Mother's sacrifice, you are now in some kind on aethereal interstitial plane where you can spawn "daughters", in one of three roles - ranged, melee, or tank.

The thing is, in the original version of the game, there was only "Nightmare" mode. There is no healing class, because there is no healing... except for sacrificing another daughter after the battle. The game has since introduced a second mode called "Dream", where as each day passes, each daughter regains 50% of her HP back.

Maybe I won't have to sacrifice any daughters. Based on what the game told me, though, that's unlikely. It tells you upfront that dying is part of the game, and you should expect to die. A lot.

Red-Barbie-Mother aside, it's quite an interesting game. It doesn't grab me quite as much as some of the other tactics-style games I've played this year, but I can definitely see myself spending some more time with the game when I'm in the mood for something dark and angry.

Steam went down while I was writing this, which was a little disconcerting.

Bad North: Jotunn Edition is the "definitive edition" of Bad North, which I'd never played. It's a real-time cozy tactics strategy roguelite.

I threw "cozy" in there, because of all the games this reminds me, it's actually Townscaper that it comes closest to in terms of atmosphere.

It's somewhat minimalistic in design, but that gives it a unique character. You defend a series of islands against Viking invaders, so it's like the anti-Assassins Creed Valhalla.

I wish I had more to say about it, but I've come down with some kind of not-COVID (according to two tests so far), and couldn't stay awake last night to post the update.

I then went to bed and couldn't sleep, so it's a lose/lose.

I really must look up the difference between roguelike and roguelite, because all of these subcategories are doing my head in.

I tried Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus at some stage last year, and I hated it; so much so, that it did what I do with any of the games that I "nope" out of: leave them running until I've got all the card drops, sell the cards on the marketplace, then uninstall it, and hide it from my library.

I reinstalled it today to see if maybe it made sense to me now, and it absolutely does.

While it's not as pretty as Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters, it does make sense to me now, but it's just not quite as engaging as CGD.

I honestly thought it was the latest 40K game, but I checked, and there have been FOUR 40K games released since this, with two new ones later this year.

Embarrassingly, I've tried multiple 40K games, & failed to connect in any genre. I went into last night's stream, not sure which which genre CGD was, and it's a turn-based tactics game.

CGD is both visually & aurally gorgeous, and was I not pretty much trashed, I could have gone on playing for another hour or two.

However, it feels very lore-dense, with some assumed knowledge, which might be off-putting if someone was buying it cold, without any 40K knowledge.

A few weeks ago it dropped to a historical low, and I was tempted, but decided against it, which meant that for once, Humble Choice paid for itself.

High drama, ugly deeds, politics and moments of kindness swirl amid the waters of a re-emerging Tulare Lake

The drama was high on the Tulare Lake bed Saturday as #flood #waters pushed some landowners to resort to #heavy #handed and, in one instance,# illegal #tactics, to try and keep their #farm ground #dry — even at the expense of other farmers and some small communities.

Someone illegally cut the banks of Deer Creek in the middle of the night causing water to rush toward the tiny town of Allensworth.

The levee protecting Corcoran had its own protection as an armed guard patrolled the structure to keep it safe.

At the south end of the old lake bed, the J.G. Boswell Company had workers drag a piece of heavy equipment onto the banks of its Homeland Canal to prevent any cuts that would drain Poso Creek water onto Boswell land.

And a tense political battle ended Saturday afternoon with the Kings County Board of Supervisors voting to cut a levee on Boswell’s land to relieve building pressure from the Tule River. A call to a Boswell representative on Saturday wasn’t returned in time for this story.

And this is only the beginning.

“This is just a #baby #flood compared to what we’ll see later this #spring,” predicted Jack Mitchell, head of the Deer Creek Flood Control District.

It is so dreadfully important for serious journalism/media to start covering GOP actions as part of a coherent whole and not just a series of isolated "huh" or "WTF" moments, unmotivated outrages, or uncoordinated extremes.

There is a coherent movement afoot, and we need to start covering it like it's a war, with tactical advances, strategic positions, threatened territory, etc. Yes, there's a worry about guns, too, and maybe some are waiting for that before calling it a war, but that misjudges what's going on.

Only by recognizing these things and tallying them persistently as part of an intentionally-larger movement can we understand the magnitude and/or motivation of some events in the right context. Seen as individuals these things may make no sense. It's WAY past the point where we can pretend they are all just coincidences.

This article is a solid analysis piece that puts recent events into an easier-to-understand whole. It's an example of the kind of journalism I've been crying out for.

I use gg.deals to keep track of all the games I want, for when they go on special at historical lows. Yesterday I woke up to an alert for Midnight Suns. It's currently 41% off on Green Man Gaming, and 33% off on Steam.

Yesterday afternoon, I decided to jump on it, and loaded it into my cart, and at the last minute, I balked. Literally sitting there with my finger over the mouse and the mouse pointer on the purchase button.

FOMO vs NOMO. Somehow FOMO won. I didn't click the button. I'm certain. Almost certain. In any case, I found myself staring at the "Purchases" screen.

[shrug] Now I own Midnight Suns. Started downloading it immediately, and got stuck in.

The reason this says "Unplayed: 0 days." is that I started playing just before 10pm, and finally realised I had to log out and get some sleep after midnight, or I'd be playing until ridiculous o'clock.

I'm not sure quite how to describe it. A tactics-RPG-roguelike? With an undercurrent of snarky MCU-style humour.

Anyway, I love it. I'll love it more when they patch some optimisations in for the occasional stuttering, but Marvel's Midnight Suns still gets my first "Excellent" for 2023.
