"Weapons are instruments of fear; they are not a wise man's tools.
He uses them only when he has no choice.
Peace and quiet are dear to his heart.
And victory no cause for rejoicing.
If you rejoice in victory, then you delight in killing;
If you delight in killing, you cannot fulfill yourself."

We join spokes together in a wheel,
but it is the center hole
that makes the wagon move.

We shape clay into a pot,
but it is the emptiness inside
that holds whatever we want.

We hammer wood for a house,
but it is the inner space
that makes it livable.

We work with being,
but non-being is what we use.

Eine Wolke will nirgendwo hin. Sie treibt – treibt so entlang. Ihr gehören alle Richtungen, alle Dimensionen. Sie lehnt nichts ab. Alles ist, existiert, und wird vollkommen akzeptiert. (…)

Ch. 29

Do you want to rule the world and control it?
I don’t think it can ever be done.

The world is a sacred vessel
and it can not be controlled.
You will only make it worse if you try.
It may slip through your fingers and disappear.

Some are meant to lead,
and others are meant to follow;
Some must always strain,
and others have an easy time;
Some are naturally big and strong,
and others will always be small;
Some will be protected and nurtured,
and others will meet with destruction.

The Master accepts things as they are,
and out of compassion avoids extravagance,
excess and the extremes.

Zhuangzi sprach: »Mein Lehrmeister, mein Lehrmeister!

Verfluchst Du lebendiges Blut
Verurteilst Du einen Schuldigen
Dann verurteilst Du einen Menschen
In dem Dein Gedanke Fleisch und Dein Gefühl Blut wurden.
Deine Häuser sperren Dich ein
Dein Wissen kettet Dich an

Abgetragenes Gewand sagte:
„Wenn du deine körperliche Form in Ordnung bringst,
und deine Schau einheitlich machst,
wird himmlische Harmonie sich einstellen.
Nimm dein Wissen in dich zurück

As I was editing this section of my thesis I realized how much my thoughts have changed. I don't think I feel this way about these things anymore, or if I do, I don't think I'd describe them in this way.

It's a good exercise to do this, I think, and that's why I wanted to share it. It forces me to go back and reread things I would otherwise forget.

Even if mankind were to “leave” civilization (or society, democracy, capitalism, name your social construct) behind, the problems would persist. The problems aren’t inherent in the constructs, they are the evil that is inherent in humanity (and all creatures) imbued by evolution. Muddy Waters - Hard Again €4.95 in Freebird

Jelly Roll Morton - Mister Jelly Lord - €4 in Oxfam

Funkadelic - America Eats Its Young
and
Odetta - The Very Best Of - both in Tower, total €18

All the streaming services in the world can't beat the joy of finds like these.

Same with the books I bought, all cheap, all second-hand:

Two translations of the Tao Te Ching (Stephen Mitchell's, Arthur Waley's), 365 Tao (Deng Ming-Dao), Dropping Ashes on the Buddha (Seung Sahn, ed. Stephen Mitchell), Zen Enlightenment (Heinrich Dumoulin).

The last two I'd never heard of. All of them will feed my head.

Ch. 27

A good traveler has no fixed plans
and is not intent upon arriving.
A good artist lets his intuition
lead him wherever it wants.
A good scientist has freed himself of concepts
and keeps his mind open to what is.

Thus the Master is available to all people
and doesn’t reject anyone.
He is ready to use all situations
and doesn’t waste anything.
This is called embodying the light.

What is a good man but a bad man’s teacher?
What is a bad man but a good man’s job?
If you don’t understand this, you will get lost,
however intelligent you are.
It is the great secret.

Ch. 26

The heavy is the root of the light.
The unmoved is the source of all movement.

Thus the Master travels all day
without leaving home.

However splendid the views,
she stays serenely in herself.

Why should the lord of the country
flit about like a fool?
If you let yourself be blown to and fro,
you lose touch with your root.
If you let restlessness move you,
you lose touch with who you are.

#TTC #Tao #TaoTeChing

Screenshot of Chapter 26 with multiple translations.

26
The heavy is the root of the light.
The still is the master of unrest.

Therefore the sage, traveling all day,
Does not lose sight of his baggage.
Though there are beautiful things to be seen,
He remains unattached and calm.

Why should the lord of ten thousand chariots act lightly in public?
To be light is to lose one’s root.
To be restless is to lose one’s control.

26
The heavy is the root of the light.
The unmoved is the source of all movement.

Thus the Master travels all day
without leaving home.

However splendid the views,
she stays serenely in herself.

Why should the lord of the country
flit about like a fool?
If you let yourself be blown to and fro,
you lose touch with your root.
If you let restlessness move you,
you lose touch with who you are.

26
Heaviness is the basis of lightness.
Stillness is the standard of activity.

Thus the Master travels all day
without ever leaving her wagon.
Even though she has much to see,
she is at peace in her indifference.

Why should the lord of a thousand chariots
be amused at the foolishness of the world?
If you abandon yourself to foolishness,
you lose touch with your beginnings.
If you let yourself become distracted,
you will lose the basis of your power.

26
The naked center doesn’t change
Its quietude is absolute
Yet from it spring all things that move
This bare awareness is the root
26
To be light on your feet,
you need a steady mind.
If your body is active,
your mind should be relaxed.

A Master can travel long distances
and still see everything she owns.
She may be surrounded by beauty
but she isn’t caught up in it.

Why run around thoughtlessly?
If you act lightly,
you lose your bearings.
If you act recklessly,
you lose your self-control.

Third Patriarch of Zen
17/20

To come directly into harmony with this reality, just simply say when doubts arise, "Not two".

In this "not two", nothing is separate, nothing is excluded.

No matter when or where, enlightenment means entering this truth.

And this truth is beyond extension or diminution in time or space; in it, a single thought is ten thousand years.

Consider movement stationary, and the stationary in motion; both movement and rest disappear.

When such dualities cease to exist, Oneness itself cannot exist.

To this ultimate finality no law or description applies.

If the eye never sleeps, all dreams will naturally cease.

If the mind makes no discriminations, the ten thousand things are as they are, of single essence.

To understand the mystery of this One-essence is to be released from all entanglements.

When all things are seen equally, the timeless Self-essence is reached.

No comparisons or analogies are possible in this causeless, relationless state.

One of my favorite things about the #TTC is that it's naturally self-evident #Wisdom or #Philoshophy that you can "test the hypothesis".

What do you think?

Since it's natural and not sacred you can play with it. That's part of the reason that there are so many translations.

Did you know that the #TaoTeChing is the 2nd most translated #Book in human #History?
