So, in today's rant about #technology and the evil #TechIndustry, I just lost more than an hour of editing of a chapter in #MicrosoftWord. I'm sure I've saved the file because it was contained in a zip folder and it won't edit, unless I saved a copy. I didn't want to save it on OneDrive, but on my PC. The result: I went through all the proofreading, edits, comments, saved it again (ctrl+s), closed MS Word, open my email to attach it, and ffs, the file wasn't there

TIL that most of the #LaborUnions in Mexico mostly protect the interests of the employers, not the workers. They're also extremely violent. Despite that, Mexican workers have been having some success organizing independent unions. The secret is largely to organize in secret.

I think there is a lesson to be learned here for dealing with #UnionBusting elsewhere, particular in the #US #TechIndustry. Organize quietly, not using company resources, and do it as cells to make the leaders harder to find (and fire) when some rat betrays you by talking about it in the company Slack.

finally{}: Tech is Taking Sides

Global companies especially may offer marketing-focused messages of hope and concern but keep their heads down and their tones neutral when faced with actually taking a stand against one side of a conflict. Per usual, though, the tech industry is happy to disrupt the status quo - n

Do NOT mistake what is happening inside #Google with a mere "greedy corporation" story.

PAY ATTENTION!

Google developed the same revolutionary #ArtificialIntelligence which has permitted the recent #layoffs in the #TechIndustry . #AI can now do the #Coding & countless other #TechJobs .

Google ( #LaMDA ) & #Microsoft ( #Azure ) are at war, & whoever wins the #AI will own the #internet .

More tech layoffs are on the way.

This will change the entire world as we know it.

"Competition for talent in the technology industry has fallen significantly allowing Alphabet to materially reduce compensation per employee. In particular, Alphabet should limit stock- based compensation given the depressed share price."

I'm curious to know what people in Silicon Valley feel about this statement. #googlelayoff #techindustry #tech #siliconvalley

Why “Copycat” #Layoffs Won’t Help #Tech #Companies — Or Their #Employees | #StanfordGraduateSchoolOfBusiness

"... the #workforce #reductions that are happening across the #TechIndustry are a result mostly of 'social contagion:' Behavior spreads through a network as companies almost mindlessly copy what others are doing. When a few firms fire staff, others will probably follow suit. Most problematic, it’s a behavior that kills people: For example, research has shown that layoffs can increase the odds of suicide by two times or more.
Moreover, layoffs don’t work to improve company performance, Pfeffer adds. Academic studies have shown that time and time again, workplace reductions don’t do much for paring costs. Severance packages cost money, layoffs increase unemployment insurance rates, and cuts reduce workplace morale and productivity as remaining employees are left wondering, 'Could I be fired too?'"

https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/insights/why-copycat-layoffs-wont-help-tech-companies-or-their-employees

Just a note for all the techies on my feed: Just because you work a tech job doesn't mean you have to do it in the tech *industry*.

Everyplace needs coders, web developers, admins, and ops people. There are real problems out there to be solved and real people you can be helping.

But the tech industry has shown it doesn't give a crap about us. Their #layoffs were a "power move", but we don't have to play their game.

Go someplace where you'll be respected. Let the #TechIndustry rot.

@jeff Gah, this quote gets me: "Could there be a tech recession? Yes. Was there a bubble in valuations? Absolutely. Did Meta overhire? Probably. But is that why they are laying people off? Of course not. Meta has plenty of money. These companies are all making money. They are doing it because other companies are doing it."

We know advertising is central to the business model of companies like Google and Facebook, but we often understate how integral it is to the larger economy — in tech and beyond.

In a new #techwontsaveus, I spoke to @danjokaz00ie to explore how companies create audiences to sell to advertisers — and why that’s important to understand.

Listen here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1004689/11747335-why-advertising-shapes-the-tech-economy-w-daniel-joseph

#advertising #tech #techindustry #podcast

Something I just found out, and which puts the recent, massive tech layoffs into serious context, is that big tech companies had been staffing up, *a lot*, since the pandemic started.

Like, "Meta had nearly doubled its workforce since 2020" and "Amazon added 427,000 people in just 10 months in 2020" levels of "a lot".

The massive tech layoffs don't mean "the economy's in trouble"; they mean *tech made a stupid gamble and lost*.

Elon's Email to Swisher: Elon Musk apparently thinks Kara Swisher is an "asshole." For the latest episode of the "On" podcast, the tables were turned on Swisher as producer Nayeema Raza put her in the hot seat, asking about her relationship with Musk. "He's not speaking to me," Swisher said. "I'm an 'asshole.' He emailed me this recently."
Swisher said the email came after she tweeted reporting from WaPo about him wanting the US to pay for providing Starlink services to Ukraine. Swisher noted that she agreed Musk should get paid and made that point on Twitter, but apparently that wasn't enough. She said Musk emailed her with the subject: "You're an asshole " Inside the email was a screenshot of her tweets. "In this case, I was supporting him, which is really kind of ironic." Swisher said. U.S. Accuses I.B.M. of Monopolizing Computer Market (1969)
