Today in 2018, Netflix released the 2.5-hour series finale of this imaginative trans-produced supernatural drama about eight psychically linked sensates, including multiple gay, bi/pan and trans leading roles.

As I've said before about this series, it can make such a difference when you have LGBTQ+ people involved in writing the LGBTQ+ roles! There's no distancing the audience from the characters. There's no apologizing. There's no shooting the same-sex scenes or the trans character's love life differently from the cis/heterosexual scenes.

A more diverse cast and writing team brought to life this long-awaited continuation of the 1993-2001 set of limited-run TV series based on Armistead Maupin's novels. Maupin's stories dealt with a mix of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, straight and cis characters who formed a family of choice while living in a house in San Francisco.

In the revival, whose plot was original to the Netflix series, all new trans roles were cast with trans or enby actors and there was greater racial diversity than in the earlier TV incarnations.

CNN has new on-screen furniture. Quite nice, not too removed from their previous look. I think it's a mistake to have the logo not white-on-red as it used to be, and the LIVE (which flashes) is quite irritating. No ticker, at least not on CNN International, other than the clock (which cycles through some stock prices). Odd choice to KEEP IT ALL IN CAPS which makes it harder to read. #tv #television #cnn

Am I the only one who reacts to most new releases with "meh"? It's not lack of interest, but that my TBR has hundreds, if not thousands, of titles that are from before this year. If I look at it chronologically, I'm still catching up and it will be a while (100 years?) before I'm up to "today." (And I do basically the same thing with #movies and #television )

If you need something to tide you over until SNW Season 2 starts, I highly recommend Mrs. Davis on Peacock. It is one of the most bizarre mainstream shows I've ever seen. Given what's going on in the world with AI, it's also one of the most timely. You won't know WTF is going on most of the time, but the finale brings it together with the feels.

As I ponder why streaming sucks as a user experience, I am struck by just how limited the UI is, for all of them. The only use case is not “open app, pick algorithm-recommended show.” There’s value in old school, linear, channel surfing. It’s not either/or. These apps could do both.

It's funny when I get invited on TV for these newsy panel chats.

I don't get paid; in fact, I drive up to Albuquerque to do these on my own dime, usually hit a bookstore and have something to eat over a pint at Two Fools, and make a day of it. I like doing them.

This means huge amounts of rare or unique #video is about to disappear from #YouTube as accounts get flagged as inactive, such as when the user dies. Families' #HomeMovies (often posted by an older relative for their family's benefit), historical footage, rare #television clips, etc. What an incalculable loss to human #history and culture!

If there are videos important to you on someone else's video channel, find a way to download them. And if you have rare #media of historical importance, consider leaving it to institutional #archives or lending it to archives for digital preservation.

Newton N. Minow has died.

Newton N. Minow, who as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in the early 1960s famously decried the state of American television as a "vast wasteland," died Saturday at age 97.

Minow, appointed to head the FCC by President John F. Kennedy, stayed in the post for just two years. Even so, his stinging critique of television programming, delivered during a speech before the National Association of Broadcasters, reverberated long after he had left the job....

A bit late to the party on this piece (I was traveling that day), but this is spot-on, and a point I've been making for the last decade: most of the media past--including the recent media past--is simply going to vanish as formats shift.

Streaming is convenient as hell. But it also gives us only a fraction of what was once available on DVD and/or VHS. Lots of titles, most of them, won't keep making that jump to newer formats.

We need to do more to preserve and make the past accessible. But at the same time, we also need to accept that none of our media is eternal. Our great grandkids might still enjoy North By Northwest, or Star Wars, or Everything Everywhere All At Once. Or they might not, and might have forgotten them.

All we can do is save what we can, and keep it accessible, while we can. Anything after we're gone is up to our successors.
