A unique way to experience the autumn foliage season in Japan is to go to an illumination (or “light-up” / ライトアップ as these events are called here). Tenjuan is part of the Nanzen-ji temple complex in eastern Kyoto, and is one of the most popular "light-up” locations. No tripods allowed, but I still managed to get a few passable shots steadying the camera on the main hall's floor.

Eikandō Zenrin-ji, a temple in eastern Kyoto, is one of the area’s popular spots for viewing autumn leaves. And when I went there a couple of years ago, it certainly did not disappoint 🍁. After walking around the premises, enjoying the splendid colors and taking a lot of photos, we had some autumnal snacks (including some amazake and dango) as shown in the last image.

Nison-in Temple is located in Kyoto’s Sagano area, on the eastern foot of Mount Ogura. It was first built between the years 834-848 as the official temple of Emperor Saga. Passing through its main gate, which was brought here and reconstructed from Fushimi Castle, you’ll hit a road lined with maple trees that make Nison-in a popular autumn destination.

Tim's work focused on using MSMs as a platform for evaluating force fields and examining whether simulations can quantitatively predict how mutations affect folding stability, toward the prospect of simulation-based virtual screening for protein design. Today, we went to Takasaki, the largest city in Gunma Prefecture. Here is a set of unprocessed, out-of-camera photos from our first stop, Shōrinzan Darumaji. It is here at this temple, several hundred years ago, that the first Daruma dolls were made.

I had this friend who liked to take photos of windows, doors, etc and call them ‘portals’. We used to send each other these kind of photos and invite each other to imagine the worlds through these portals. While I’ve lost touch with that friend, I often think of her when I take these photos.

When I’m out taking photos, I love finding things I can line up and create with. So when I saw that there was a full moon still up in the early mornings at the Old City in Chiangmai, I went looking for things to create. It was interesting cause I’d see things from the street and think I could find the right angle. Not always true. So, finding this shot was it’s own reward.

From the statue I walked further up to see a wooden gate that leads to the temple. No entry, says the sign. Wise. The wooden steps look unsafe. The temple is presumably at the top of this hill.

After showing the hilltop tumulus in Kyōto to the Australian scholar (previous post), we went deep into the #Arashiyama valley to the #Tendai #Buddhist #temple Otagi Nembutsuji (愛宕念仏寺). This temple has the unique 1,200 rakan (arhat, Buddhist adepts) carved in stone and adorned with various moss, because the temple is on the shady north side of the mountain.
The stone statues vary from pious to whimsical, each displaying its own personality. The first picture has an inscription in the phonetic alphabet katakana, which I read as a Japanese rendering of the Sanskrit mantra Namo saddharmaya pundarika sūtra, homage to the Lotus Sūtra. The statue lying next to it might be a light-hearted take on the Buddha's Parinirvāṇa!
A Shintō shrine in the Buddhist temple is named 天河辯財天社 or Tenga Benzaiten-sha, so somehow a sort of cave in the mountainside with a mirror in it reflects our Milky Way galaxy. Yet when you look into it, you see your own reflection.
This stupa looks very massive and majestic in the low angle view. The tiles makes it looking very beautiful. For sure the builder needed a very long time for so much filigree work.

Phra Chedi Ray is only a part of the big Wat Pho Buddha temple complex in Bangkok in Thailand and has many nice ancient architecture with amazing stupa or pagoda. I loved to capture them in low angle view, so they look even more majestic.
