A white mute swan paddles slowly among near the bank. Mute swans do not migrate, so this one might be around all winter.

Five cormorants paddle in formation in the water. They always remind me of synchronized swimmers, keeping their necks straights and tilting their heads up. Cormorants will migrate south to ice free water for the winter.

Approximately 20 shiny orange and black large milkweed bugs are piled onto a dried milkweed pod that is ready to burst and release its seeds. Some bugs may fly south for the winter to the southern US.

The most abundant dragonflies are the blue dashers. They are small and the males have a blue abdomen, a striped thorax and big green eyes. Here is one clinging to a dried out flower, near the water of the pond.

The eastern pondhawk dragonflies are slightly bigger than the blue dashers. This is a young male, with a powder blue abdomen and some green in his thorax. The females are bright green.

A tiny pearly crescent butterfly visits a sunflower. The butterfly is about an inch wide with its wings fully open, and is orange with dark brown and black marking.

A tiny (1/2 inch) beige and brown butterfly, the zabulon skipper, clings onto the side of a lavender-colored thistle flower.

@plants @nature though I can't say I've figured this species out, exactly-- I think those all look like pistillate flowers that are open in the outer rings of the central area, I can't tell whether the whitish middle part will be more pistils, or stamens/pollen.. Several thistles, with meticulously regular arrangements of plant-green spines arranged into amazingly precise spheres at the head, adding a classy vibe to an otherwise-messy yard. One of the thistles sports tiny purple blossoms at the end of each spine, turning that thistle's sphere a pastel shade of purple and giving it a softer look than the others near it.
