Was ja wirklich nützlich wäre in der timeline, dass man toots, die man schon in der timeline hat, nicht mehr angezeigt werden, wenn sie durch jemanden geteilt werden. Mich verwirrt das mehr als ich eh schon bin... :mastoinnocent:

I again deleted the #linkedin app from my phone.
Not only because of the possible distraction, but more because of #annoyance with the #timeline.
Back in days when I was a user on the birdsite, I switched to an alternative client to have a cleaner and linear(!) timeline.
LinkedIn totally sucks with its “algorithmic” timeline: weekly and two-weekly reappearances of posts. Especially of posts that mention a date or an event.
Well, thank you LinkedIn for making me quit on this app.

A bit on #Suricata and the #timestamp field: The "Timestamp": field is the time when the message actually got logged, not when the event occurred.
It's "close enough" for a casual inspection, but can put events out of order when presenting on a #timeline. As you can see from the attached picture, i pinged 8.8.8.8 two times first, then 8.8.4.4 last, but it appears as the second of the three JSON elements in eve.json file.
The true timestamp of the event is the "start": field and the length is "end": - "start": field values.
I remember joining #twitter many moons ago and I didn’t have a clue how to use it. There was no explanation anywhere and it seemed cliquish and extremely difficult to use.
After a very long time I gradually was able to #curate and prune my #timeline till it became interesting and useful.
Then the #algorithms and the #oligarchs took over and it became stressful.
#Mastodon took a couple of days to learn well enough and about a week or so to curate and prune and now it’s a blast. Much better.
You can see that #Sidekiq tasks have been slowly going down (fewer users using #Mastodon/#Fediverse?). Then I had this massive drop early May (not sure why, but likely a relay that stopped working).
I've now added a bunch of new relays and seeing the number of tasks going up massively (to the point Sidekiq is running 4-6hrs behind in my #Federated #timeline -- maybe I need to QA and remove some relays?)

Meine Erfahrung zeigt mir jedoch, dass Hashtags nur halbherzig bis gar keine Verwendung finden. Ich lasse mich, was die ARD betrifft, gerne vom Gegenteil überzeugen.

@radicalaipod @shengokai one main point regarding the #timeline/ #newsfeed and searching on mastodon are #hashtags. So one hint e.g. to get a nice and helpful newsfeed: follow not only people you like, start following specific hashtags. And for your own posts use them as much and helpful as possible.
As soon as I found out what I'm really interested in and what hashtag this suits best, I never got bored or overwhelmed again, even at the beginning without knowing anyone.

@ethanschoonover I had all the same thoughts when I joined #Mastodon. I’ve come to like the current #timeline more and more. I’m still not anti-#algorithm but I have come to realize that the important question is not “what algo suits my needs” but “what algo suits the community needs?” What algorithm will help create more connection? More of the thoughtful and constructive responses that I’ve come to appreciate here?

in the #ivory app I can exclude followed #accounts from my #timeline but have them showing up in a #list. I like this feature because it is easy to maintain my lists and at the same time having less clutter in my timeline.

A Favorite post is like a pat on the head, right? It's a local, private "like" that doesn't propagate to the Fediverse, yes?
However, a Boost is big and important. A Boost has life that attaches itself to your post and propagates to the public Fediverse, right? Boost has more value than a Favorite.
I both Favorite and Boost messages. Why would someone only Favorite but not Boost -- is it to protect their timeline that a Boost would fill?

I have many conversations daily and I am also seeing locals in my timeline even though I am not following them.
Some people say choosing an #instance isn't important, but I think it is and you should definitely join one that suites you. You are not limited to it, but it will be your first impression and introduction.

One feature I miss or would like is that the #android app actually shows the number of replies to a post in your #timeline. I only now realized that it shows a different icon depending on whether there are replies or not, and I actually thought that most posts just don't have any replies.

My conclusion after four months of #Mastodon: If you value having as many #followers as possible, stay on #Twitter. If you want to be read, stay on Mastodon.
Despite significantly fewer followers, the interaction rate is much higher. Even though I follow fewer people, the information content is significantly higher.
I feel more informed. I ❤️ Mastodon for the truly time sorted and unfiltered #timeline and for the control over my data!
@stux #socialdiscovery has suffered a bit although and requires the #extensive use of #hashtags to help spread the #word and have the same #reach.
This is possibly problematic because #hashtags aren't moderated at all, allowing other parties to infiltrate and overwhelm feeds by spamming irrelevant posts with a specific hashtag.
"That's the #freespeech," some would say. Well, others say it degrades the quality of your #timeline. Some would reply that you should just follow the people that you want and associate with #instances and #federations that you are interested in.
It is a difficult thing, and the idea of #groups as some has proposed might be a good idea. Because I myself don't see anything relevant in the #hashtags in the #mastodon app. Where an algorithm could help a bit, but then again, that information needs to be extracted from somewhere, again coming down to #privacy and #moderation.
I would like to see a page of hashtags people I follow are following.
Many of us follow many accounts. This leads to a Home timeline that is very busy, especially if our Follows are heavy boosters.
The interface allows us to hide all boosts from Home, so that we only see original posts by our Follows. It's refreshing. There are no third-party posts and I can focus on the actual comments of my Follows.

Excellent advice. #Lists let us flexibly tailor the inflow of posts. Those with large numbers of Follows can cut out the excessive noise from their busy #Home #timeline, and those bored by what comes up in Home can use Lists to focus on the stuff that interests them.
And as you say, we can always mix the unchanneled Home timeline back in.
I still use Home a lot but also have a "Core" list for the accounts I don't want to miss and many subject lists for intermittent visits.

Ab und zu kritisiert wurde die Praxis, bereits geteilte Beiträge erneut zu teilen. Weil auf #Mastodon keine #Algorithmen ältere Beiträge in die #Timeline spülen, geraten die viel schneller aus dem Blick. Dass erneut geteilte Beiträge wirklich noch auf Interesse stoßen, hat man in den Zahl gesehen, das "Re-Boosten" hat teilweise noch einmal genauso viele Besuche gebracht, wie der ursprüngliche Beitrag. Wer das nicht möchte, kann auf der Profilseite "Geteilte Beiträge verbergen".

If you know what you are interested about, just put it in a #hashtag, search and follow it. No need for an #algorithm or to find hundreds of #people to follow for an interesting timeline.
#Fedilab is a Mastodon #client on Android. Its developers keep bringing out new features that strengthen the tenets of #MastodonCulture.
Their most recent tool is a #cache for incoming posts on the #Home #timeline, storing them for a week. This bypasses the #TimelineLimit of #400posts.

I don't like how, when I try to look at someone's profile, I sometimes see a wall of boosts, the last couple of which are from me, and have to dig to see What this person is actually saying about things and if I might want to follow them for that.
Boosts tell me what you like enough to repeat, not your original thoughts. If you don't have original thoughts, you better be curating some epic boosts.
This would also help with that thing where you sometimes want to just see what your friends have been up to, but you can't because they hit the boost button so many times that other content is flowing to the top.
It would also help with the problem where people who post content for mass-viewing sometimes hesitate to boost because they don't want to hide their own original content from their audience.

So I've been regularly using this thing for around 5 weeks now, and what have I learned so far:
- Following #hashtags is awesome to personalize your #timeline and to find new people to follow
- The Advanced Web Interface in a web browser is my preferred way to use this, followed by the Toot! app on iOS
- With more and more people migrating over here from the birdsite things are getting more interesting every day
I just wanted an alternative on the web to follow the local #timeline of other #instances that I like within the same #instance that I am. :blobfoxannoyed:
