As @zachnfine was writing, one first fix would be that #FollowersOnly #toots should NOT be visible to nonfollowers mentioned in the toot. To take an email comparison, it forbids the To:victim BCC:mycrowd type of #harassment. And this can be implemented on the "good #server".

Then there are the blocking mechanism issues which are multi server issues, more complex...

How does one post a series of messages which are related to each other ? Usually they are numbered. Is there an accepted etiquette for this on the network?

@compi federation on the most basic level is strictly defined by follows. So anyone who follows someone from your #instance, has that person's #toots federated on their home instance. Since you are on your own server, this is more prevalent because if other users were on your server, your server would get federated more easily and more servers would see your toots faster.

#hashtags are the only searchable thing on #mastodon without elasticsearch which allows you to search your own toots or toots you were mentioned in. BUT your instance can only see the hashtags from toots that your server is federated with.

I hope this clears some things up.

It occurred to me why finding interesting people to #follow can be hard.

I look at the popular #toots that have been boosted a lot and often they don't interest me. And often it's the same people on the explore tab.

I have #niche tastes, see? And anything that gets a lot of #boosts is less likely to be niche.

I almost always #translate #toots that are in a #language other than #English (I'm not even #bilingual 😢😖). I spend a lot of time on the #Explore tab, where they appear pretty frequently and if they're there then I reckon it's important enough to find out what it says.

Some mastodon servers have text search but most of us don’t have that luxury.

I think we are forgetting that on Mastodon #hashtags are king.

Change practice; open or follow tabs based on hashtags searches & one can see all #toots that have it.

We had Stockholm syndrome by the likes of #twitter where we are made to do things a certain way.

Once you understand & use hashtags search becomes useful.

Expecting perfection from #mastodon is wishful thinking.

Toots having a #hashtag from allowed server can be found via search & follow.

I've been feeling that #Mastodon's need to #HashTag keywords and subjects makes it clumsy to use.

On one hand it means #federation/searchability is opt-in by default, but every time I toot something, it's on me to remember to do it.

It also #kinda #makes #toots look #messy.

There seems to be a lot of division in the #Mastodon community about using #posts or #toots

As #GDPDR requires only that I can download my stuff, for me, this is a no-go.

We had a small discussion group, and one of our our participants went back to to his admin why important them is not a standard feature.

Tips to get through Mastodon toots:

1 - I turn off Boosts & replies in my home feed.

2 - Spend about 40 minutes once a day to go through all of the feed once.

3 - Usually skip the toots that dont have a headline or main sentence starting the para describing it(No CW required).

4 - Relatively shorter toots grab my attention.

5 - At this point I am getting most of the news from Mastodon as I follow BBC, Hacker News etc here.

There is another option:
Do what you do anyplace else:
Scrolling, "scanning", and
selective reading.

Whereas I can see in the fraction of a second if a #toot interests me, it might take me considerably longer to decipher such a CW ("USpol" is easy enough, but I still wonder about quite a few, having read 1000's of #toots).

I can see the point for content that might really upset a significant number of users.

However, I don’t need a "reading nanny", so to speak.

As you know there is no algo on mastodon to promote your content, hence the only other thing is hashtags
People search for them & when they do they will find your toots.

I for example have various tabs open at all times that are searches I have pinned in my view, so new content based on these hashtags pops up as soon as someone adds them to their toots.

You can also follow hashtags, so any toots with them show up in your feed.

@JesseSkinner I agree that is a challenge, wonder how that can be resolved.
As I was looking at people I follow I could see I havent seen alot of their #toots its difficult to catch up with everyone.
If only there was a separate timeline for personal #toots vs #boost ed toots.
