I know precisely how xenophobic, racist conservatives talk about immigrants in the west precisely because I know how our country's *own* xenophobes talk about *our* expats — from among colleagues and acquaintances to politicians and public figures.

Some Maldives lore for context:

Over a third of our population = expat workers. They mostly work in construction, house-help duties, and other such jobs. Most are Bangladeshis. They are here to fill the labour vacuum created by our politicians' shitty, expensive, and pointless "tharaggee" (economic 'growth') mega-projects.

The Maldives is only what it is because it is among the "tourist" havens of the global north. It is where the west's ultra-wealthy come in for indulgence, and a tax haven/cash-cow for the west's hospitality organisations. Otherwise, we wouldn't be a so-called "developing" country: we have virtually nothing better to rely on but tourism — and the proceeds line the pockets of our resort tycoons, greenwashing politicians, their families, and so on.

So, Maldivians have developed this superiority complex about themselves, seeing themselves as the "enlightened" in South Asia.

My family thinks I'm nuts when I insist on taking the bus when I visit them in Memphis.

Yes, the Memphis transit system is criminally underfunded and sucks, but I recommend it to any tourist for the following reasons:

* Culture: There's no better way to immerse yourself in Memphis culture than to use the bus system for a few days.

* Education: If you don't quite grasp the concept of institutional racism, you definitely will after riding the Memphis transit system for a few days.

* Entertainment: I guarantee you will laugh out loud (along with the rest of the bus) at least once. One time, when the bus engine kept stalling out at a stop light, one woman yelled "Raggedy ass bus!" and got the entire bus roaring with laughter to relieve the stress. Another time, the driver received radio communication from the depot that was overheard by the entire bus: "Drivers, be on alert for a woman on Airport Way dancing in nothin' but her underwear and a big afro." All of the passengers burst into laughter.

* Humanity: One steamy hot day on a bus with insufficient air conditioning, an elderly man looked faint. Someone asked the driver to stop the bus in front of a fast food restaurant while another rider went inside to get a cup of ice water for the man. Everyone on the bus waited patiently while the man drank the water and signaled he was OK before the bus resumed its route.

I detti “A San Martino ogni mustu diventa vinu” e “A San Martinu si vivi lu vinu” sono legati alla tradizione secondo la quale proprio intorno a questa festività il mosto si è finalmente trasformato in vino.

Si passa alla cosiddetta “svinatura”, si aprono le botti e a tavola viene servito il vino novello.

A Palermo il San Martino dei poveri veniva festeggiato con il rito del biscotto di San Martino, inzuppato nel moscato: “Li viscotta di San Martinu” vengono descritti nel XIX secolo dal demologo siciliano Giuseppe Pitrè come dei biscotti dolci “che hanno la forma di un piccolo pane, la cui parte appariscente è alla roccocò” (Pitrè, G., 1881, p.411).

L’artista palermitano Igor Scalisi Palminteri ha recentemente completato un significativo murale a Cefalù (PA), dipingendo una parete degli alloggi comunali di via Pietragrossa.

L’opera, intitolata “Ti Rissi No" si pone come un potente messaggio contro il femminicidio e la violenza di genere, affrontando con forza e sensibilità una questione di rilevanza sociale sempre più pressante.

L’artista, Igor Scalisi Palminteri, descrive il murale come un tributo alle donne vittime di femminicidio e violenza. Il corpo dipinto sulla parete rappresenta tutto ciò che spesso rimane invisibile: l’anima, i sentimenti e gli sforzi delle donne, spesso trascurati nella società ombreggiata dalla violenza di genere.

As night trains are the superior art of traveling, I never understood why in the last decade most train companies dismantled them.
I always suspected a mixture of pseudo-modernism ("high-speed trains are more modern"), lack of cooperation among rail operators of different countries (the European rail system has more of a patchwork than a network) and the conspiracy theory of car and air travel industries lobbying against the most convenient way to travel long distances.

Luckily, follks in Eastern European countries weren't as shortsighted as their counterparts in the other parts of Europe, and maintained their night trains. ÖBB is most active in bringing back night train connections in Europe. Turkyie and Ukraine are good on track, too!

Venice to start charging visitors entry fee next year (Reuters).

"Venice plans to experiment with an admission fee of 5 euros($5.35) for day trippers next year to try to manage the flow of tourists drawn to its historic canals, the city council said on Tuesday.

The fee will be applied on a trial basis on 30 days next year, focusing mainly on spring bank holidays and summer weekends when tourism numbers are at their peak. All visitors over the age of 14 will have to pay it.

The aim was to find "a new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice and those who visit the city," Venice tourism councillor Simone Venturini said."
