Trade has huge benefits for a country. But there are two approaches:
Neoliberalism: moving jobs so billionaires can pit poor people there against workers here and break unions and force wages down. Thereby destroying entire regions of the country for profit.
Democracy: We the People require the benefits of trade to be SHARED on both sides of trade borders so everyone benefits.

The EU-New Zealand Trade Agreement was signed today, paving the way for its approval by the European Parliament and ratification.
Among others, it will:
🔵 Eliminate tariffs
🔵 Open the market for services
🔵 Improve access to procurement
🔵 Facilitates #data flows
It will save #EU businesses €140 million a year and increase EU investment in New Zealand by 80%.
This #trade deal will bring us even closer together.
The #UK is set to sign the #CPTPP trade deal next week, and the government is keeping very quiet about it. Perhaps because there is an estimated gain to the UK of only 0.08% of GDP, just a 50th of the OBR’s estimate of what Brexit has cost the UK economy to date.
Not to mention that agreements over standards will involve the UK submitting to international CPTPP courts on these issues. Sovereignty, anyone?

British households have paid £7bn (€8bn) since Brexit to cover the extra cost of trade barriers on food imports from the EU, according to researchers at the London School of Economics (LSE).
The university’s latest report estimating the impact of leaving the bloc on UK food prices found that trade barriers were consistently hampering imports, pushing up bills by an average £250 (€290).

How Brexit boosted French and Irish ports.
Before the UK left the EU, Rosslare Europort was an underused facility with just six sailings a week to the continent, all into Cherbourg. Now it has 30-plus, to Cherbourg, Le Havre, Bilbao, Dunkirk and Zeebrugge – a fivefold increase has led to record overall freight traffic.

The #ports were sited in San Pedro Bay before #oil was "discovered" locally, but the wealth that oil extraction & trade generated allowed capitalists to (literally) cement San Pedro Bay as an important node in global #trade, pouring oil profits into building up the ports.
