When people suddenly stayed home during COVID lockdowns, wild animals started traveling more.
A new study of over 2000 mammals from dozens of species (elephants, pumas, reindeer, etc) found that animals traveled substantially longer distances and ventured closer to roads when traffic sharply declined.
The findings, in Science, adds to previous research suggesting that temporary road closures could help wildlife management.

good news, they changed their mind about the placement. The second streetlight has the T-shaped asphalt patch as above obviously dug out for the move, but then the streetlight was reinstated in the old position. As much as I like Olivia Chow as a possible mayor for #Toronto, one issue is a deal-breaker: the tearing down of the Gardiner Expressway.
I live in the east end of the city, and the boulevard option doesn't deal with the traffic as well. In fact, a lot of die-hard NDP neighbors said they will vote for someone else based on this one issue.
Here are the issues:
- Most of these neighbors rely on using the Gardiner to get across town when public transit is not feasible. Parents taking their kids and gear across the city; people with mobility issues; leaving the city from the east end requires driving across town; deliveries; picking up bulk items from downtown shops or buying furniture from Kijiji; commuting to jobs across town that start at unusually early times, or are located in places poorly services by TTC (or it takes 2 hours by TTC vs 20 minutes driving). All those cars downtown and on the Gardiner aren’t people driving a few blocks – people are going serious distances.
- While reducing car use in the city is laudable – it’s unrealistic, especially as huge numbers of new condos (complete with many new car owners living downtown) will be moving in over the next few years. It’s a numbers thing: even if the percentage of people driving downtown decreases, the absolute number will increase simply because there are more people and more cars.
- On the east end, traffic is already terrible off Lakeshore. Exiting at Carlaw continues to be crowded and a mess. There are no really good ways (and too few) ways to leave the Lakeshore there and go north.
- The plans I believe Ms Chow is referring too for tearing down the current construction-in-progress doesn’t have a good plan for cars exiting the Gardiner either – it will be an awful mess. I’m not convinced it can deal with the predicted volumes of traffic. It will become another Carlaw or worse.
- And what about seamless connection to the DVP?
- A couple of years ago, there were community surveys regarding the current plan – I filled one out. It has community support.
- Tearing it down is also a huge waste of money – of which my tax payer money has gone into.
It's an issue that affects the heart of of various communities in the east end.

Just talked to my wife who relayed a very upsetting story.
I'm sharing it because #OklahomaCity needs to do more to stop bad drivers and lower our ridiculously high speed limits.
She was driving northbound on Macarthur blvd near Hefner Road. In front of her she saw an old man who had pulled off the road (with flashers on) and was trying to rescue a turtle that was trying to cross the road. She of course stopped.
Behind her was a large red pickup truck (she, unfortunately, did not get a tag # or make and model) came barrelling through. The truck almost hit the old man but did manage to smash the turtle. The old man was upset and yelling but the truck came blazing on.
Obviously, the main issue is that there is a selfish driver out there who thinks his schedule is worth more than both a turtle and an old man's lives, but the other issue is our ridiculously high speed limits. Given the amount of traffic (including cars, pedestrians, and bicycles), 45 mph is far, far too high for Macarthur and other artery streets --- because unfortunately, people like this pickup driver will be pushing 55+, if the speed limit is set at 45.
It is time for the people of #OKC to make our voices heard and call on our city to lower speed limits, especially on busy artery streets like this one. I would recommend emaing the mayor (mayor@okc.gov) or your city councilor (ward8@okc.gov --- but substitute your ward #).

Why, London? Why do this to yourself? It’s a beautifully sunny and pleasant evening, and cycling home almost every street was like this: a stationary car jam. I’m certain that 50% of these drivers could easily have used an e-bike or e-cargo bike, 20% could have been on public transport or walking and 20% of the rest could have been in some sort of mini-EV-van that takes up far less space. I just got a one-star from a passenger. ALL my riders today tipped anywhere from 25% to 300% (yes, 300%) of the fare. I don't know WHO would tip me like that, but rate me 1 out of 5 stars.
These things matter to drivers. Please be sure you rate the driver what you sincerely think they're worth. Today's data shows someone didn't do that. It stays with us.

I honestly doubt that crossing at one of those cross-walks would be much safer than going straight across the street without a cross- walk. Cross-walks don't magically protect you from getting hit. To reach a cross-walk across Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy, Ms. Glover would have had to first cross 2 or 3 side streets. The crosswalks themselves are at busy, wide intersections where drivers can turn right on red (meaning that most won't come to complete stops). #traffic #safety #pedestrian #Atlanta

This is a pattern -- and yet police and reporters feel the need to point out "they weren't in a cross-walk" -- as if cross-walks are an option. What it is: a measure of how much a transport facility or service is used.
What it isn't: a measure of what kinds of transport facilities & services people actuallywant/need/demand(!) in order to live their lives safely, affordably, sustainably, with dignity.
Most people never get the chance to "demand" transportation. They only get to use what’s been given to them, regardless of whether it works for them.
