Standing beside a large lake at twilight. An almost full moon shines down upon the scene through a light layer of mist in a partly cloudy sky, mirrored on the calm lake surface below. The shore of the lake is wooded, with many tall trees. Dozens of lily pads in several large clusters speckle the lake. Near the shore, water grasses and other aquatic plants also break through.

We are standing on a hill looking down over the treetops towards a broad river below us. It is raining. The river mirrors the gray sky. The far riverbank is also wooded, but the ridge just beyond is part of an area that was burnt over several years earlier. It is covered with the white charred still-standing trunks of dead trees and some shrub growth. Beyond that ridge are the lower slopes of mountain that quickly disappear into very low clouds. Some of the trees on our riverbank are turning gold or orange. The trees on the opposite bank are a riot of golds, oranges, reds and greens.

Walking along a dirt and gravel footpath beside a lake. Straight ahead, we are approaching a rather long wooden footbridge across the neck of a small cove. Groves of tall pines and hemlocks grace the shores on both sides of the bridge. The lake surface is frozen. A dusting of snow covers the ice and the ground and has also been caught in some of the tree branches. A very light snow is falling from the overcast sky, slightly ghosting the far shore of the lake along the horizon.

I spend a lot of time #running #trails at night. It's fascinating to me what different #wildlife we encounter and when. There's a late-spring skunk season, mid-summer toad season, and then last night apparently marks the start of nighthawk season. Nearly stood on one of these guys last night. They look *exactly* like rocks until they flutter up when you're a meter away and scare the crap out of you.

40 years ago today: The highlight of my day occurred when I brilliantly attempted to cross a bog bridge at full speed in the rain. Bog bridges are wooden walkways built across muddy areas to prevent heavy hiker traffic from tearing up fragile wetlands. This one was constructed of split tree trunks with the flat side up.

It is raining. We are crossing a swampy area with water grasses, moss and shrubs growing from ground covered with several inches of standing water on low wooden bog bridges. The swamp is surrounded by the tree trunks of a dry land forest.

Crooked tree, marsh, forest and beaver pond at golden hour, Marino Pond, Plymouth, Connecticut. September 9, 2019, 6:04 PM.

A large cluster of clouds is drifting across a soft blue evening sky. Left foreground: a crooked narrow tree trunk covered with patches of light green fungus. We are standing beside this tree at the edge of a marshy area covered with tall golden brown water grasses along the shore of a pond. A similar marsh abuts the far shore. A shady forest begins where that marsh ends. The pond itself is covered with hundreds of lily pads. The late day sun is casting a soft golden light on much of the scene. The crooked tree and near shore are in shade.

40 years ago today: The southern portion of the Taconic Mountain Range is basically two parallel chains separated by a high central valley. The Appalachian Trail follows the eastern fork. In Connecticut, this consists of a high, wooded plateau called Mount Riga, with the rocky crag of Lions Head rising from its southernmost tip.

We are standing atop cliffs of reddish gray rock looking down into a sun-drenched valley hundreds of feet below. The valley floor is relatively flat, although wooded hills bisect it to our right and others rise in the distance along the entire horizon. Most of the valley floor is wooded, too, but there are several green fields, some houses and a small pond visible. The sky is bright and clear, but rather whitewashed along the horizon, which is the only portion of the sky visible in the photo.

40 years ago today: The open, grassy crest of Cobble Mountain looked just as lovely today as the image which had lingered in my memory. Encircling the summit was a sprawling, rocky meadow with extensive views to the north and west. The mountain overlooked a lush, green valley filled with forests and pastures in the foothills of eastern New York State.

On a rainy, overcast day with low clouds and wisps of valley fog we are standing atop a mountain looking down across wooded foothills to an agricultural valley with large green fields and pastures, swathes of forest and small clusters of buildings. A long, flattish mountain chain rises from the far side of the valley and other mountains dissolve into the mists beyond it.

My little dude Myles used to be the best hiking buddy. He’s 14 years old now and because we now live in a desert state, there’s no more hiking for him. But I love to look at old photos of our hikes and I miss those trails. #hiking #dogsofmastodon #trails #photography

A sable and white papillon climbing up a steep trail covered in autumn leaves. A rock face is to the left.

I put up a quick blog post about my plans to wheel Sea to Sound Aug. 25-27. Pic of me with Ian Mackay on the post is from 2018 multi-day bike tour we did from Seattle through NW corner of Washington into BC and back. Ian saw on Twitter that I was riding through and rolled out to surprise me. http://bikestylespokane.com/2023/08/06/wheeling-sea-to-sound/ #SeaToSound #BikeOlyPen #WheelsMoveMe #GetOutside #BikeTooter #accessibility #IansRide #IanMackay #trails

Bridge over autumn waters, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. October 19, 2019, 8:50 AM.

A beautiful morning with a deep blue October sky mirrored on the waters below. We are following a dirt and gravel footpath to a wooden footbridge across the mouth of a small cove on a large lake. A cluster of aquatic plants along both sides of the bridge have turned bright oranges and golds, as have most of the trees surrounding the lake. A grove of stately pines just across the bridge add deep green tones.

40 years ago today: There were some great viewpoints along the trail, but at the cost of some memorably nasty rocks. The descent from Bake Oven Knob into the adjacent gap, where Bake Oven Knob Shelter was located, crossed an old slide covered with loose stones whose sliding days were obviously not yet over.

We are standing at an outlook along the long flat crest of a mountain looking towards a similar wooded mountain a few miles away. The wooded slopes of our mountain run down towards a valley between the two mountains. The flattish valley floor is mostly green and golden brown farm fields, with a few narrow strips of forest as wind breaks and a handful of visible farm buildings. Through a gap in the other mountain on the left of our picture, we can just make out a similar farming valley in the hazy distance with another line of mountains beyond. The sky is bright and sunny, but very hazy and whitewashed.

Oranges and blues of October, New Britain Reservoir, Southington, Connecticut. October 12, 2019, 4:47 PM. Throw in some bright greens as well.

A very rocky stretch of lakeshore beneath a deep blue October sky with a few small streaks of cloud. The leafy green shrubs growing among the large, rough gray rock outcrops are a bright yellow green. A forest that runs up to the edge of the rocks is sporting vibrant orange, gold and bright green autumn foliage. The late day sun is low in the sky offscreen right, mixing bright sunshine with long dark shadows across the scene.
