It's incredibly frustrating when you've put effort into a translation, only to have it completely rewritten in a childish form of Japanese by the client's validator. The revised version is riddled with missing particles and grammar mistakes.
My agent is hesitant to address the poor quality of the work, given that the validator is their client.

Today, I'm translating a hosiery catalogue, from Italian to English.
Hadn't exactly planned on spending a day looking at pictures, trying to understand the subtle differences between hosiery, pantyhose, stockings, tights, socks, leggings, pants, knee-highs, waist-highs, hold-ups, push-ups, shapers, contouring, crotchless, seamless, seemed, single-leg, etc. 🤦

I'm feeling a lack of good translations for the Brazilian words «migo», «miga», and «migue» which are short for male friend, female friend, and enby/neuter friend, respectively.
Just to add insult to injury, «miga» sounds a lot like the n-word so I definately cannot use it with people who don't speak Portuguese or Spanish.
The best I can think of is «pal» but that doesn't allow for gender euphoria like their Brazilian counterparts do. Also, «pal» feels a bit less intimate than «migo/miga/migue».

I tried to log in to a website. Before I was even able to enter anything, I was informed:
Le nom d’utilisateur entré est une adresse e-mail non valide.
This looked like a poor #translation to me, so I checked the English version (which was presumably the original):
Entered username is not a valid email address.
Doesn’t sound great to me, either, but there is a crucial difference between the two sentences.

Whoever thinks "document translation" can "easily be done by chatbots" and continues to describe #translation as an "entry-level job to break you into a field where you do something kind of useful, but it’s also sort of a steppingstone to the next level" is clearly hallucinating.

Sadly, two of my Minetest contributions died recently. They would have added 2 helper scripts to update and syntax-check the #translation files for mods. This code was used successfully in production for a long time but still was rejected because it is not "on the roadmap". 😠

Today, I'm translating a presentation on UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from Italian to English.
Yesterday I attended the seminar "From Mother Tongue to Other Tongue", where Jayasree Kalathil spoke about the challenges in #translation from #Malayalam to #English while keeping in mind her own privileges, #translating a different culture without simplifying it, and not pandering to the mythical "english reader". So…I was researching the coin shortage in Cameroon. En route I stumbled upon a BBC article written in pidgin. I really had no idea that media outlets were formally publishing in pidgin. Did you? Has anyone seen this before?
For those new to pidgin, it’s a conglomerate version of two languages to help facilitate communication.

This poem was published by and sent to print by a Canadian literary magazine without a contract being given to either me or the author, which is a copyright violation. The publication also declined to include the original Chinese text.

I didn't think adding translation to a project was going to be particularly easy, but I am starting to wonder if people maybe create their own solutions?
I was looking at https://www.npmjs.com/package/i18n, it looks nice. But it doesn't seem to let you break your translation text into multiple files for easier organization?
And I like this editor https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=thibault-vanderseypen.i18n-json-editor, but it doesn't seem to be compatible with the format the i18n node package uses.
