I've always done *some* literary translation (mostly stage plays and nonfiction) in between my usual medical and business documents, but I spent much of 2022-23 on a book translation gig and really liked it. Don't use the word "translator" to refer to translation tools.
A #translator is a highly skilled linguist who can translate a text for its specific use and target audience, taking care of cultural issues, localisation, and any other issues that might cause problems in translation.
A #TranslationTool is an automated tool that can only reproduce a literal version of the original text. The result should never be used as a final text, as it can contain linguistic, factual, and/or cultural errors.
Firefox's new built-in #translator still leaves much to be desired. In this translation from German to Italian, #Firefox confuses Russia with Belarus and shows difficulty in interpreting verb tenses. Even Google's translation is not error-free, but it is overall preferable to Firefox's (also because certain errors completely change the meaning of the article). So for now #TWP extension remains my go-to solution for translations in Firefox. Sorry #Mozilla!

OK, question for my #translator, #editor, or #writer followers. Is referring to ships as "she" no longer generally accepted? As someone who tries to be as inclusive as possible in my writing, I can see how it might not be, but it had honestly never even occurred to me that this might be the case.

I thought I was done with data migration projects when I left my IT career to become a translator. But now I'm busy restructuring 34 terminology databases as I move my business from one software package to another.

I've just learned that DeepL FINALLY released its Firefox extension, and I got really excited. It seems to work really well on websites that aren't in your set language!
Sadly, it doesn't seem to work on Mastodon. The extension doesn't seem to detect other languages in what it thinks is a wholly English website on my end. I was really hoping I could use it to read non-English toots on PC, but I guess that'll have to wait. ✊ 😔

The Dunning-Kruger effect plays an important part in the #translation industry: too many people with only basic foreign language skills ("We've all learned English in school!") making statements and decisions on issues they should leave to specialists.
Hence the popularity of machine translation: if you don't know what it takes to create a quality translation, you'll accept anything that looks like a translation, without checking all those things a professional #translator knows can go wrong.

I am looking at #wordpress #translator plugins for my website and not at all sure if it's even necessary. With all of the translator apps already out there will a plugin even be used?
This is all a part of my goal to make the website more accessible, as I'm also looking at ways to make my site easier for the blind to navigate. I tend to have descriptions for all of my photos, but I think I need to revisit how I do this.

Non, ce n'est pas "pénible" d'essayer d'utiliser les bons pronoms dans un texte. C'est respectueux et ça fait partie de notre travail. L'écriture doit s'adapter. Même si c'est plus facile en anglais (ce que j'aime le "they"!).
When I run longer texts (RUS -> PL, ENG->PL)) through #deepl #translator, I see seemingly random gender changes. When the text describes stereotypically "female" actions (baking a pie, having a row with a roommate) the AI(?) switches gender to female. There are also opposite cases -- a lawyer is always translated as male, even if the original phrase denotes them as female.
Anyone has similar observations?
