Five questions I'm often asked as a #translator:
• What type of documents do you translate?
• Do you have a preferred language pair?
• Do you have any specializations?
• What are your other language pairs?
• Do you localize content?

“We need a lot of high-quality human-translated data just to learn the quirks of a language to translate both casual and formal text”
Maybe it's quicker to just hire a high-quality human #translator? Just saying...
#EurLex portal seems to be of no use today.
I hope they'll fix it by Monday when I'm really going to need to dig deep in #EULaw, especially into #RepresentativeActions for protection of consumers' #collective #intetests.
#Today my notebook broke. And while trying to boot it from an #USB I had to pull out our old backup piece running #Windows7 and install shenanigans I need for my work. Luckily, I'm just a #translator so all my essential #software is happy even with that obsolete junk of #OS. Kudos to #wordfast and #VivaldiBrowser. What a day!
I'm excited to be going to the American Literary Translators Association conference this November in Tucson. 😀
I've always done *some* literary translation (mostly stage plays and nonfiction) in between my usual medical and business documents, but I spent much of 2022-23 on a book translation gig and really liked it. I'm hoping to pivot more toward literary translations, if I can just figure out how to find the gigs.
#Today I've finished & delivered a massive Slovak to EN #ContractForWorks #translation of nearly 100 standard pages, all done in six days. Learned a lot of #FIDIC #terminology and other stuff. I guess I deserve a #beer or two, or three, or ...
“AI took my job, literally”—Gizmodo fires Spanish staff amid switch to #AI #translator https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/09/ai-took-my-job-literally-gizmodo-fires-spanish-staff-amid-switch-to-ai-translator/ "Last week, #Gizmodo parent company G/O Media fired the staff of its Spanish-language site Gizmodo en Español and began to replace their work with AI translations of English-language articles, reports The Verge."
Don't use the word "translator" to refer to translation tools.
A #translator is a highly skilled linguist who can translate a text for its specific use and target audience, taking care of cultural issues, localisation, and any other issues that might cause problems in translation.
A #TranslationTool is an automated tool that can only reproduce a literal version of the original text. The result should never be used as a final text, as it can contain linguistic, factual, and/or cultural errors.
Firefox's new built-in #translator still leaves much to be desired. In this translation from German to Italian, #Firefox confuses Russia with Belarus and shows difficulty in interpreting verb tenses. Even Google's translation is not error-free, but it is overall preferable to Firefox's (also because certain errors completely change the meaning of the article). So for now #TWP extension remains my go-to solution for translations in Firefox. Sorry #Mozilla!
Hello #Mastodon! I've finally made the switch!
I post about respectful language, plain English, translation, human rights, sustainable development and the links between them all.
I'll be reposting some of my old content from Txxxxxr if it's still relevant.
Looking forward to building a community here!
OK, question for my #translator, #editor, or #writer followers. Is referring to ships as "she" no longer generally accepted? As someone who tries to be as inclusive as possible in my writing, I can see how it might not be, but it had honestly never even occurred to me that this might be the case.
Perhaps yet another example of how we can be completely unaware of our biases?
Could all the servers/ instance please add a translator please?
Maybe agree on a good one between yourselves
Thanks everyone who contributed to this release!
The Daily Mail reports that translators and content writers are in the Top 10 of "Lazy Girl Jobs".
Apparently, they're "low stress, low effort, with lots of flexibility and freedom." Oh, and I forgot the "comfortable salaries".
Not linking to their cr*p paper - they don't deserve any more clicks. But the cheek of it!
I thought I was done with data migration projects when I left my IT career to become a translator. But now I'm busy restructuring 34 terminology databases as I move my business from one software package to another.
It feels good to flex the old information technology muscles for a week, though I'm much happier as a translator than I was as a professional techie. 😊
Are there any English>Portuguese translators out there who have some time to take on a ~5,000-word article that would be a pretty solid antifascist mitzvah? There might be some money in it, but not much. (Asking as a fellow translator who’s done a shit-ton of volunteer/underpaid work over the years for projects that don’t have much money, but are worth supporting.)
I've just learned that DeepL FINALLY released its Firefox extension, and I got really excited. It seems to work really well on websites that aren't in your set language!
Sadly, it doesn't seem to work on Mastodon. The extension doesn't seem to detect other languages in what it thinks is a wholly English website on my end. I was really hoping I could use it to read non-English toots on PC, but I guess that'll have to wait. ✊ 😔

Through incredible diligence, @yilinwriter
has finally wrestled an agreement from the British Museum. Very much overdue. It's confusing that they had no policy to obtain translations. It does make you wonder about previous installations.

New instance, new #introduction!
I mostly write in English, but don't hesitate to toot at me in #français!
I'm very much pro (vaccine, science, choice, mask, etc.).
Come say hi 👋
Have you heard of #FluyoApp yet?
But, if they take this seriously, then - in my humble opinion - they also should aim to become best-in-class in #accessibility, don't you think?

The highlight of my day was discovering the #folklore and #mythology enthusiast and #translator @firstname.lastname@example.org through kbin.social just before it went down for maintenance this morning.
I've always been more of a social aggregator user than a microblogger so I mostly lurk on here, but the above link is his very active Mastodon profile. He has also created a kbin folklore group that I'm hoping will become active, but that site is a bit sluggish today from the Reddit migration. Here's the folklore magazine/community/group: https://kbin.social/m/folklore
Hello, updated #introduction!
I work in #experimental #poetics, speculative fiction, digital-visual collage, and hybrid works that blend the textual with the digital (including experimental film, #videogames, glitched imagery, and AI generated artwork).
I'm also an avid D&D player and Dungeon Master.
"Vive la #france !"
Anyone know a good #translator ?
Firefox Translations is now available.
The add-on allows all Firefox users to translate websites and texts in the browser without having to send the data to an external server.
Another step to more privacy.
And speaking with you about how these things are constant works in progress helped me let go of needing everything to be perfect. There are so many more things I want to do, and the need to do it all at once was holding me back. So I'm looking at this as a first step.
I'm pretty happy with what I've done so far. It's completely rewritten and restructured, and is much more intuitive for users. And it will keep getting better.

New instance, so I suppose it's time for a new #introduction.
I'm Dom, 32, #bi / #polyam (not into cis dudes afaik tho lol), I'm a #translator, I play a lot of #videogames (loving #indiegames), although gamers (tm) are exhausting. I #speedrun as well, so check out my #twitch and #youtube for that.
The Dunning-Kruger effect plays an important part in the #translation industry: too many people with only basic foreign language skills ("We've all learned English in school!") making statements and decisions on issues they should leave to specialists.
Hence the popularity of machine translation: if you don't know what it takes to create a quality translation, you'll accept anything that looks like a translation, without checking all those things a professional #translator knows can go wrong.

Amazing opportunity for fledgling translators based in Japan!
Three-day literary translation workshop in Tokyo, March 21-23. This will be hosted by Sayaka Murata (Convenience Store Woman, Earthlings) and her translator Ginny Tapley Takemori.
You need to submit a CV and cover letter to apply, but if you are accepted then attendance is free (and they'll even help with transportation to and lodging in Tokyo) though you must be based in Japan. Applications are due by February 12, so don't wait!
Please boost to help this find budding translators!!
This is all a part of my goal to make the website more accessible, as I'm also looking at ways to make my site easier for the blind to navigate. I tend to have descriptions for all of my photos, but I think I need to revisit how I do this.
Ouf, c'est pénible de discuter d'écriture #inclusive avec certaines personnes. J'essaie de donner les renseignements les plus clairs possibles aux collègues plus ou moins réticents, mais je vois tellement d'insultes dans le questionnement de certains.
Non, ce n'est pas "pénible" d'essayer d'utiliser les bons pronoms dans un texte. C'est respectueux et ça fait partie de notre travail. L'écriture doit s'adapter. Même si c'est plus facile en anglais (ce que j'aime le "they"!).
When I run longer texts (RUS -> PL, ENG->PL)) through #deepl #translator, I see seemingly random gender changes. When the text describes stereotypically "female" actions (baking a pie, having a row with a roommate) the AI(?) switches gender to female. There are also opposite cases -- a lawyer is always translated as male, even if the original phrase denotes them as female.
Anyone has similar observations?

I work with varied texts but agencies and other clients like to imagine I'm a specialist: one only sends me biomedical texts, another only stage plays, another only insurance or real estate or environmental, another only corporate docs, and another mainly early-modern #Jewish texts.
I grew up in New Jersey, lived for years in Philly, and am now in Upper Manhattan.

After three days, an #introduction
I’m Charles, or Charlie. Born in Milan, I live in #London with my husband @ebassi. I’ll post a lot of pictures of our #cats and #food.
I’m a #translator of #prose and #comics, usually from English into Italian, under my deadname and now as Charles M.
I’m 44, I had an interesting life. I wrote articles, short fiction of sorts, a software tutorial, a theorem. I’ve been #disabled, #trans and #queer before knowing those words. Now it’s a happy life too.
Having moved over here from mastodon.social, it is time for a proper #introduction. I am a #translator and work from English and Russian into German. My main focus are articles and books about #Russia and #EasternEurope. Occasionally, I do some writing of my own,.
My posts will mostly be in German, sometimes in English and infrequently in Russian. I am interested, among other things, in #translation, #language, #literature, #philosophy, #culture, #history and #society.
A chocolate vulcano couldn’t be more delicious than this! (Ok, maybe a chocolate vulcano…) I am so deeply grateful for this praise, which I share with my #translator, Tara Chace, who clearly did an outstanding job. Thank you! Hugging bonanza to her, my brilliant agent at Grand Agency, and glorious Arctis Books USA. Oh, and IRON WOLF is now on pre-order, and will be released in the US in February 🥰❤️
My personal research is largely concerned with reconstructing the worldviews and practices of historical magicians, alchemists, astrologers, and other occultists, based upon the study of their #manuscript writings and other primary source documents.
Links to all of my work can be found on my profile!
Born in the UK, I'm married with 2 adult children, and have lived north of Prague, Czech Republic, since the 1990s (I'm a bilingual dual national). I enjoy travelling, coffee and bad puns 🙂
You can find my published fiction and links through https://linktr.ee/alastairmillar - enjoy!
