It doesn’t have to be a big deal. Lots of these situations are fairly casual cissexism. Nails on a chalkboard but, apologize, own that, yeah, you need to work on how you see trans people internally and subconsciously, and move on.
How you view and see trans people ends up impacting how you categorize us. And I don’t mean how you know you’re supposed to view us or what you “know” we are, I mean how you actually do deep down, subconsciously, emotionally, etc.
Apologizing for not being careful with words when you’ve used transmisic language is a non apology, and it avoids taking accountability for the transmisia that ends up leading to those words.
Don’t be afraid to call transmisia transmisia, even if they’re a person with good intentions. An actual ally will listen and reflect and learn, and not deflect onto their word choice and find other ways to not-apologize.
Final note: am i picky? does this seem unforgiving? maybe. i don’t care though. i truly do not. i suspect even a lot of other trans people will find me excessively harsh, and i’m fine with that.

Because of ideas and speech like this, my brother physically attacked me last year. He dragged me from a car, and broke my shoulder into five pieces, and destroyed my life.
It motivated children to attempt multiple times to kill another child, before finally doing it in cold blood. There is no "civilized" or "genteel" transphobia, when every word of it demands murder.
