i checked in on my #vanilla #propagation experiment.

i was about to move this friend because it didn't look like it was doing too well, but i happened to look at the node to see if there had been any more bud growth & THERE WAS A ROOTLING. i was shocked. i just put it back in its spot & covered the node with a little bit of moss.

in pic 3, the red circle is around the new bud, & the white circle is around the new root.

the phallus multicolor forms a hairy ball first, which then cracks like an egg, revealing a slimy egg inside, then it'll make a phallus wearing a little skirt. so yea. she does it all! ;)

Another fun puffer! Don't be fooled though. There's enough poison in 1 pufferfish to kill 30 adults. NO antidote. The skin is covered in spikes with this poison and can damage your hands or kill you. It's unfortunate that the dangerous things are so darn cute...lol

any #azolla enthusiasts out there? azolla are tiny aquatic ferns that can be used as green mulch, animal feed, & more.

they double in number extremely quickly, so can overtake a pond. we grow them in buckets & kiddie pools. they like shade & can happily share space w/water spinach.

the other day, i started a new azolla pond using just a handful of azolla from the orange bucket in pic 2. i arranged some ferns over it for shade. now it'll just go!

i finally got a good(-ish) photo of one of the crab spiders that we have. they definitely have their seasons & after a long time of not being around, they are around again. i'm glad they're back! they build three-dimensional webs in our rafters.

there are yellow-billed cardinals who love to use the neon-green nest webs that the spiders make. the birds come looking specifically for that kind of web. it *is* very soft, so i don't blame them.

friends, have you ever seen jade vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) flowers?

i got this jade vine plant a few years ago & put it right next to the house so that if it ever bloomed, i'd see it.

i wasn't sure it would ever bloom as we have poor soil, but the other day, as i was hanging some laundry, i gasped as i spotted these flowers!

i just stared at them & was completely in awe..

i think their pollinator is a type of bat.

hi folks, this question concerns growing #orchids outside in a #tropical climate.

i've read that one should try to remove any rotting/melting/old parts of the plant, but it seems like some of these orchids are just fine with the moisture & decomposing material provided by these old parts of the plant.

yesterday i started working on a #zine about #katuk (Sauropus androgynus).

art is hard, y'all!! i've included the original pic below, along w/variations i made to try & show the plant more clearly. i think i like the black & white outlined one the best (good for a bw zine).

i plan to hand these zines out with any katuk cuttings i sell at farmers' markets! they will include info about how to grow & eat it 🥰

AKA #Lei flowers & #Frangipani, which are actually small trees native to #tropical regions. This was mine from the years I lived on the coast in S. Texas. Unlike Hawaiians, we did not use them for Leis, but we often took a cutting & gave it to a newcomer so they could start their own plant.
