`waypoint(17, "some name")`
at various interesting points. doing a couple dozen of these was enough to convince me that I don't want to manually mark the 500 or so that would be useful.
simplification 1: drop the id number. I was thinking it would be more compact than using passage name, but I want an ordered list, not an unordered list, so I can't use a bitset. the list will be a string that gets gz'ed, so passage names are fine.

the limited form of seen-marking is working pretty well, I think it improves playability quite a bit, but it doesn't help the problem of "it's hard to know if I've playtested every meaningful path".
so I'm thinking of adding a milestone system. initial version will be only for playtesting, because it's going to be hard to make it work well for players.

This is the interface for a program called #Twine, which is an open source engine for making text-based adventure games. Each square represents a possible screen of text for the player to be presented with, and the lines pointing between them represent that these screens have buttons which connect them.
In this particular one, the player meets a talking fox, and can respond three different ways, to which he tells them to put on a magic bridle, which they can vehemently refuse, but in the end, they don't have another option: all roads lead to mare-TF.

Twine est vraiment un outil très caméléon. Je m'éclate à l'utiliser pour Crée ton Mutant, mon outil de création de perso à Mutant Year Zero.
J'utilise le format Sugarcube qui permet, entre autres, une sauvegarde en local.
Je pourrais customiser le css mais je crois que je vais pas aller jusque là. Le css n'est pas mon point fort et ça ne rajoute pas de fonctionnalité utile à l'outil.
Mais essayez Twine, vraiment. C'est un chouette outil.

today in #twine porn, I wanted to add scroll-shadows, which can be done neatly with just css using multiple backgrounds with different background-attachment, except SugarCube's html/css structure is wrong for doing it neatly. so I have something messy using background-attachment: fixed instead of background-attachment: scroll, which gets very messy with sticky headers and doesn't work with variable height sticky headers.
so many ways of doing this, all of them kinda icky. gonna sleep on it
I've been giving #twine another look, and if anything, it's gotten more confusing since the last time. For something that's supposed to be a simple introduction to interactive fiction, there sure is a lot of "the first thing you need to do is choose a story format, which determines which of several completely incompatible syntaxes you'll use" in people's intro articles/videos. I know at some level it doesn't really mattter for getting started, but it's off-putting.

J'aime trouver des utilisations insolites pour des outils. Là, j'utilise Twine pour créer une aide à la création de perso pour Mutant Year Zero: avec gestion des valeurs des stats, infos détaillées pour faire des choix éclairés... A la fin, on obtient la fiche de perso, prête à être rentrée dans Foundry.
J'avais déjà fait ça pour Réforme et Rapière, là c'est moins complexe en terme de calculs, mais il y a plus d'intéractivité.
J'utilise le format Sugarcube. J'ai un peu hésité avec Chapbook mais j'ai choisi Sugarcube pour la possibilité de paramétrer les variables au milieu d'un passage et pouvoir imbriquer les conditions.

problem: the story has "menu" passages (eg, a "credits" page). when you visit a menu passage, then return to the story, it will re-evaluate the story passage, which will roll new random numbers. this has always been a problem, but it wasn't really important when story-transcript was just for debugging.
solution is for "return to story" to either pop history or restore the old rng state, unsure yet which is better

@lertsenem @genericgeekgirl @zarfeblong @rubereaglenest @konjak I very much came at #InteractiveFiction from the angle you expected initially: I left school without any IT qualifications at a time when they were more-or-less mandatory, focused on writing from that point on, and got a foothold in programming through #Twine. It's only recently I started developing anything other than IF.
Winter's Heart is a Twine-based interactive greetings card with opt-in horror elements if you like that kind of thing and a full Wholesome Mode if you don't.

Just wrote a postmortem for my #IFComp game "A Chinese Room", which is a great excuse to post about it.
A one or two reader experience, A Chinese Room is one story in two, an outsider's impression of Russia, a story of power, control, inhumanity, and love.
It is, in my opinion, the best thing I've ever written.

My 11yo expressed interest in #TextAdventures/#InteractiveFiction. I wrote stuff in #Inform years ago but I don’t think that would be his jam (and as beautiful as #Inform7 is I don’t think he’d be able to learn it quickly enough to avoid losing interest).
Does anyone know of good tutorials for #Twine that might be accessible to a bright 11 year old? I’d be happy to help him but I’d love to have something he could also read himself while I’m at work. Thank you!

I was at a very short #Twine workshop yesterday where we were shown the graphical interface with draggable squares and wiki-like mark-up and nice little arrows and so on. Is that also used for big, complicated Twine games? I was expecting something looking a lot more like a traditional programming interface! #interactivefiction
I love interactive narrative and its possibilities, I have a fair bit of knowledge of #twine, to the point of implementing an #ink-like continuous-writing structure in it; but my ADD and stuffing my head with narrative models and points of interest have been getting in the way of producing stuff in my free time. I hope I can remedy that.
