Apple Notes is great in every aspect except the most crucial one − typography.
1. For some reason, the embedded type SF Pro uses a single-story 'a'. You can't find this symbol anywhere else in system, except in Notes. It doesn't make any sense, and for me, every word with it dramatically stands out because it's unusual to see it in that typeface.
2. The app sets unjustifiably small leading, even with proportional typefaces. And switch to monospace, and everything quickly becomes a hot mess.
3. The contrast between different typography hierarchies isn't high enough, making it harder to read even small chunks of text.
Seriously, it baffles me. Apple boasts some of the best designers on the planet. Apple Notes is one of the most widely used apps on both macOS and iOS. Even then, Apple pushes out version after version with questionable typography. What a mystery!

This is an interesting business, if you buy fonts. Some lovely work, but you can choose what you feel is a fair price, and the EULA allows for more uses than many others do; except temporary transfers, which are really handy when specifying corporate fonts to brands that don't have in-house design.

Besides changing to "Asteria's Luxury" (Asteria was Astemar's original name for her alter ego before I changed it to Astraea), I also realized I could try out "asteluxe" -- basically either a callback to Asteria or Astemar herself :blobcat3c: And I am really digging this, so who knows who wins out in the end...
In the meantime, while I once again made a list of fonts to try out and/or edit, here are some sketches I made using some of those fonts as an "inspiration." Although technically, the first one is inspired by one of my favorite logos that has always lived rent free in my head since I was like (checks calendar) five 😂

A feels larger, and is more compact. Also some parts of B seem thin and faded out.
Even so, I like B better. Probably because the kerning of the period after the number and the Q is more interesting.
And the lowercase j has a wing that makes it easier to distinguish.

Actually, I think that #type #hints in the #function #signature are usually *better* than having them in #docstrings. Not only can they not get out of date / become wrong (without causing checking failures), static type checking is much easier this way.

My most popular post (toot) here ever was a vinyl highway #sign that had gone wonky (pinned post). Since seeing that one, I've started noticing them all over the place, each one wonkier than the last. But this one may be the most remarkable – not only are the letters curling off, the entire green base of the sign has split and crackled in a way that looks like intricate line art.

I have huge distaste for this brand that is currently being lauded in the #graphicDesign media. It's simply weak #design. The #type offers nothing. The shape suggests that #NorwichCastle holds the exclusive rights to crenellations.
No part of this in any way tells me anything about that particular castle, or why it's unique. It basically says "generic castle"
It's a perfect example of something that happens too frequently in design; the lure of something new, shiny and fashionable

I think #Unicode encoding proposal documents are a very underrated #type #design resource. Want to design this character you have never seen before, here is this helpful document with all background information you need and examples showing the character in context.
Too bad the earlier the character is encoded the rarer to have these documents.
@alexelcu I meant my initial point to be about autoderivation, not handcrafted codecs. You can handcraft codecs in Scala, you can also do so in typescript but it’s a lot less pleasant, this is true, but not what I’m arguing.
I would be surprised if the natural python encoding of a sum type was to be an object with a single field with the name of the sum’s branch - Left or Right, for Either. I suspect the natural encoding would be a field called something like #type, instead, like is idiomatic in typescript as far as I can tell.
This is pure supposition though, I’ve only done a bit of either python or typescript.

🏳️🌈 the word itself, «kjærleik» (love), is written in the prominent language in rural Norway, once again blending elements of Pride and Bygda.

Working on some type treatment. I start by printing out (on paper) 5 point type, then blowing it up on the copier 400% then again 300% and then cutting and taping down and crumpling and copying again and then scanning to a file.
This is not a font. This is unique. Some digital with a lot of analog mixed in.
This is what I did 30 years ago and damn if I didn't have a good time doing it then and now.
