I made this image for an article I’m writing called “Dominion Over the Machines” about how the SAG-AFTRA AI precedents (if ratified) may move things forward not just for actors, but for every human that may face non-humans doing their work.

Interesting times we’re in.

Standing in the rain, a robot cradles a human who knells and is screaming in distress as the robot holds them with either care or malice, apparently the robot in control. It is fraught and tense but also some care or regard seems to be happening between them as their fates are bound together.

The entertainment industry is _not_ the tech industry. Doing things like the tech industry does them is not what the entertainment industry is about, even if the CEOs forget that.

The AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA had to agree _this month_ to have the word “telegraph” replaced with the words “email or text” in the tentative agreement. North America hasn’t had a telegraph system since 2006.

The fact is that, despite the studios’ same old tricks, SAG-AFTRA’s leverage is unchanged.

The issues they’re fighting for are important and existential.

It doesn’t matter what Carol said. What matters is that they take the time to get it right.

And if SAG doesn’t lock down AI now, 2026 might be too late.

And the biggest fact is that Q4 earnings calls start on 11/8 next week, and none of these CEOs want to go on those calls and say: “Welp, I know I get paid millions to be a master negotiator, but I just couldn’t close a simple union deal with The Nanny.”
